Tips from Your Local PGA Pro at Ledene Golf Centre For this months article we are going to look at pitching. The action to pitching a ball is really only a shorter version to your normal golf swing, the only difference being in the address position, where you will be setting up to the ball slightly differently as opposed to your iron shots. Remember the pitch shot is concentrated more on the accuracy and the distance control of the shot as opposed to trying to create power. 1. At the address position make sure the weight of your body is favouring the left side (leaning towards your target) to a ratio of 60/40, which will enable you to create with the club a descending strike into the back of the ball. Your club face should be square to your target. Then position the ball in the middle of your feet. Your body alignment (shoulders, hips and feet) should be positioned slightly left of your intended target, with your knees slightly flexed. 2. Looking down the hands should be positioned ahead of the ball, the top of the grip is opposite the inside of your left thigh and the shaft of the club leaning slightly left towards the target. Its important to maintain this angle both in the backswing and particularly in the downswing as your hands lead the club back down to the ball, trusting the loft of your club to get the ball airborne, Don’t fall into the trap of one of the most common faults of trying to scoop the ball into the air with your wrists. 3. Finally a thought about the pace of your swing when playing this shot. Try to keep the pace in the downswing the same as it was in the backswing. Do not decelerate at impact as this can lead to all types of poor shots, including catching the turf before the ball or thinning the ball along the ground, try to make sure you make a smooth acceleration through the ball. 4. Finally after you have practiced and improved your technique, start to learn about your different wedges from your pitching wedge to your lob wedge, which will all travel with different ball flights and distances depending on the loft of the club

A Word From Your MP

Based at Gardenlands Garden Centre

I was extremely excited to hear, last month, about how Jaguar Land Rover is set to invest a further £150 million in its new Engine Manufacturing Centre, in the i54 Business Park, near Bilbrook. This project is particularly close to my heart, as I worked hard to ensure the success of the original bid and helped secure around £10 million worth of support for the JLR centre. This money comes on top of the existing £355 million that the company is already putting into the plant. The extra funding will create an extra 700 skilled jobs for people in the local area, bringing the total number of jobs to be supplied by the facility up to around 1400. The long lasting impact that such investment can have on an area cannot be overstated and I am delighted that it will be the people of South Staffordshire who will be benefitting from this decision. During the recent Business Questions in Parliament, I asked whether it would be possible to have a debate about building on the success of the automotive industry, which has contributed so much to the economy of both the West Midlands and the UK as a whole. In his response, the Leader of the House of Commons, Andrew Lansley, touched on the 10 percent increase in new car sales over the course of the earliest part of this year (in comparison with the previous year). He also praised Jaguar Land Rover’s huge success in international markets and exports, saying that the fact that this has been reflected through investment in a new engine plant is something that is greatly supported right across the House. Not only does this this announcement highlight the strong commitment that Jaguar Land Rover is making towards manufacturing in South Staffordshire but, as importantly, it helps place a spotlight on what the area has to offer business as a whole. This is something that will be further emphasised at the South Staffordshire District’s first major job fayre on April 26 th in Perton. The fayre is being organised in partnership with local job centre plus offices, South Staffs Work Clubs and other work club networks in the West Midlands. It will be a wonderful opportunity for Codsall residents to meet with a series of local businesses and discover the many employment opportunities available to them in South Staffordshire. I would encourage everyone to pop by and very much look forward to meeting some of you at the event. To contact me call 01902 701479 or 0207 219 7150
