New Café Ledene now open DAILY from 9:00am Monday – Saturday and from 10:00am Sunday ALL WELCOME - Golfers and non-Golfers Hot and Cold Food and Drinks served daily in beautiful picturesque setting Tips from Your Local PGA Pro at Ledene Golf Centre This month we are going to to look at how to get out of a greenside bunker; 1.Take up position in the bunker, settle yourself in the sand and then flex your knees to give yourself a good solid base (make sure the ball position is in line with the left heel). 2.Position your body alignment (shoulders, hips and feet) slightly to the left of your intended target. 3.Open the clubface and then take your normal grip. (Don’t grip your club too tightly) 4.Your clubface will appear to be open to your body alignment but it will be square to your intended target. 5.The club will follow the line of the body, creating a feeling of an out to in swing path. 6.As you make your backswing, hinge your wrists so that you create a steep angle of attack. 7.In the downswing make sure you hit an inch behind the ball and let the bounce of the club glide through the sand and that will enable the club to lift the ball into the air. 8.After the club has made contact with the ball in the sand, keep the club head moving along its path. (Don’t let it decelerate) The photo shows a good set up position to play your bunker shot. Ensuring the feet are slightly left of target and the ball is positioned towards the left heel. The clubface is open at the address position with the club head not touching the sand If you have been struggling with this aspect of your game, hopefully this months article will help you improve your technique and give you the confidence to get out of a bunker REMEMBER: DO NOT GROUND YOUR CLUB BEFORE YOU PLAY YOUR SHOT AS THIS WILL INCUR A PENALTY.

A Word From Your MP I was delighted to learn during the recent Budget announcement that regional theatre will benefit from tax relief of up to 25%, later this year. This step could do much to revive this struggling sector and support rural economies. It is my strong belief that the Arts play an incredibly important role in our communities. They provide entertainment, an opportunity to socialise, a means to educate and inspire, and a source of funds to many local businesses. It was therefore with a great deal of astonishment that I discovered - as the result of a recent Freedom of Information request - that, in 2012 to 2013, South Staffordshire received just £10,000 in total grants from the Arts Council England. This was in sharp contrast to the £533,354 received by Dudley South, the £892,308 received by Walsall South, the £1.3 million received by Wolverhampton North East and the £8.5 million received by Birmingham, Ladywood. These figures portray the huge disparity between arts funding in rural and urban communities, a disparity that I believe needs to be urgently addressed. Even if you take into account variations in population size, these statistics continue to be disturbing. The average spend per capita in South Staffordshire over 2012 to 13 was just 11p, far below the £14.85 per capita in Wolverhampton North East and the £64.90 per capita in Birmingham, Ladywood. I consider it appalling that residents in South Staffordshire, who receive just 11p per capita, are effectively funding millions in arts grants for urban areas like London and Birmingham We are lucky to have a great number of wonderful arts events in South Staffordshire, such as the Codsall Community Arts Festival, a biennial festival of music, drama and visual arts. This year’s Festival was held between Saturday 8th March 2014 and Saturday 29th March 2014, and covered almost three weeks of daily activities. The festival receives no funding from the Arts Council, but it acts as a testament to what we can achieve even without this additional support. Activities that took place over the three week period included a Community Day, an event with local artist Keith Turley, an evening with children’s author Jeremy Strong and a talk by former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion. In my opinion, it is events such as these – which actually reach out into the community – that the Arts Council should be spending money on. I would urge the organisation to reconsider its funding formula and to examine the long term benefits of providing more support to rural areas, such as South Staffordshire.
