Newly elected Rotary District Governor Richard Green, whose appointment covers 55 Rotary clubs in Shropshire, Staffordshire and the Black Country, has been outlining his theme for the Rotary year which has just started. His theme is ‘Young at Heart’ and he has explained why. “That’s what we are and we can see that in all the amazing, energetic projects that we organise,” said DG Richard who lives in Finchfield and is a member of the Wolverhampton Rotary Club. “Young at heart also means our younger people are at the heart of Rotary if we want our wonderful organisation to flourish into the future. “Our district is in the forefront of service to the community both locally and across the world and we want to carry on being innovative and unique with our projects, such as the cycle ride in support of prostate cancer awareness and the Staffordshire Ironman contest both of which will be taking place again next year.” He wanted to see youth competitions and activities, such as Rotary Youth Leadership Award and Kids Out expand, as well as revitalising youth exchange to give the gifts of encouragement and support to young people in the true spirit of Rotary. He said the district had shown the way in pioneering the Vocational Study Exchange project which had already been copied by at least one other district. “Kids Day Out has grown to take place in two locations and this is a wonderful example of how our clubs support and give a day of fun that youngsters will remember for a very long time,” said DG Richard. He said the Disability Sports Fun Day had become very popular and with continued club support Rotary wanted to continue giving this gift to disadvantaged people of all ages. “The Health Awareness Days, supported by so many of our clubs, provide a superb benefit to our communities and we want these days to grow in number as well as locations.” The district International Committee’s very active support of the ‘Lend with Care’ scheme had been participated in by a significant number of clubs. This scheme provides small loans to people in third world countries to enable them to start up small businesses. He added that worldwide in Rotary members had been increased by in the last year, and the district wanted to be part of that growth.

Carers Support Day - Organisations in South Staffordshire have been showing the district’s carers just how much support there is available to them. On Friday 19th June, Lakeside Medical Centre working in partnership with South Staffordshire Council hosted a Carers Support Day at the Civic Centre in Perton. The idea stemmed from an idea by new practice manager, Marie Wright. Marie said: “My idea was to host a coffee morning for all our carers we hold on our register and to invite a few key groups to attend to offer some support and a signposting service to them. However, after approaching Age UK South Staffs it became apparent that we could offer more to a larger group. I approached Maggie Quinn, Partnership and Locality Manager for South Staffs Council who agreed to work with us to deliver this unique event.” Carers and people who are cared for were invited from Perton, Bilbrook, Codsall, Pattingham and Patshull via the GP practices in the area and posters were also displayed in waiting areas, but it was not only aimed at carers but for the community too. We also recognised that there is a larger number of people who act within a caring role who do not see themselves as carers, our aim was to reach out to this group as well and offer our support. Numerous support groups from the local area were involved, as well as ‘Let’s Work Together’ workshops - drop in sessions that carers could attend to get information about a particular area. Carers also participated in seated aerobics and yoga session in the main hall. The event was well attended and we received fantastic feedback from those who came.. Both parties wanted to thank Lakeside Medical Centre for planning and holding the event. Also the groups who attended found this event useful and was a good way to network with other agencies. We would also like to thank our Patient Participation Group (PPG) and our practice Administrator Katie Mackintosh for providing the numerous cakes and help with serving tea and coffee. Both myself and Maggie were extremely grateful for all who attended and for all the input by those who helped bring the event together. We are hoping to roll this event out to other areas and hopefully this could be a yearly event.

A Word From Gavin Williamson...............

Summer has well and truly arrived in South Staffordshire. This means summer recess is around the corner and that means more time to spend in South Staffordshire. It also means I get to spend time visiting local businesses, volunteer groups and meeting more people that I wouldn’t be able to do during when the House is sitting. One of my favourite activities is visiting the vast number of community led groups that we have here in the constituency. I am always so extremely proud of the amount of volunteer organisations that we have in South Staffordshire. We are so fortunate to have such a wide variety of local charities and support groups, and it is a huge comfort to live in a community where you know that this kind of support is readily available to us. This made it even more special when I was invited once again to the SSCVA Celebration Event at Trinity Methodist Hall in Codsall. The SSCVA, of which I am a patron, is a fantastic group of volunteers who provide invaluable support to those in our society who need that extra bit of help. They are inspiring people and I am honoured to have support the group and their Volunteer Award. In fact I was so inspired by the group that last year I launched my own Volunteer Award to recognise the contributions of volunteers across South Staffordshire who have gone that extra mile. The SSCVA do such a fantastic job and I hope that many more people will take part in this extremely rewarding activity. I was greatly honoured to be asked to once again officially open the event and afterwards to present the second Gavin Williamson MP Award. The award was created to recognise the contribution of a nominated volunteer who has really gone the extra mile in carrying out charitable works within our local area. It was almost impossible to select a winner from the long list of nominees I was given, with all involved spending so many hours selflessly helping other people across South Staffordshire. I am a huge supporter of the many volunteer groups that we have in South Staffordshire and I’m immensely proud of the work that they do to support our communities and the most vulnerable in society. The celebration event showed how lucky we are to have so many truly amazing people in South Staffordshire. It is clear at the many of the events that I attend, but especially at the Codsall Carnival that I attended recently, that volunteers and community play a huge part in our lives. It is easy to think that these days we are heading towards a breakdown of community spirit, but the SSCVA and the countless volunteer groups in Codsall and indeed across South Staffordshire show us that our community spirit is still alive and well.

SUDOKU – JUST FOR FUN

Café Ledene now open DAILY from 9:00am Monday – Saturday and from 10:00am Sunday ALL WELCOME - Golfers and non-Golfers Hot and Cold Food and Drinks served daily in beautiful picturesque setting PGA Golf Tips from Jeremy Nicholls at South Staffs Golf Club Academy.....

How to get the maximum distance out of your driver Here are a few points to consider when using your driver on the golf course. •The correct tee height is vital to achieve consistency off the tee when you are using your driver. •With a driver you are looking to strike the ball on an upward swing, ( this is when the club reaches the bottom of the swing arc) •As well as teeing the ball up, ensure the ball is forward in your stance ( inside of left heel). •At impact the ball should make contact with the driver just slightly above the middle of the club face, this will reduce spin especially into a headwind and help the ball to launch onto its correct ball flight. •If the ball is placed on a tee too low it will cause you to create too much of a descending angle (steep) of attack into the ball. •A further point to remember is to make sure your posture remains the same from the address position right through to impact.

Summer surveillance on board the Nimrod R.1 This summer visitors to the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford, will have the exciting opportunity to climb on board the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod R.1 XV249 and learn about its intelligence gathering role in the Royal Air Force. Visitors will have exclusive access on board the aircraft for the first time since its arrival in 2012, in the new Nimrod Tours, available on selected dates throughout August. During the tours lasting around 15 minutes, aviation fans will learn about the history of the aircraft, hear about the crews on board and view some of its sophisticated surveillance equipment. The Nimrod flew in both the Maritime patrol and electronic intelligence gathering role. Maritime surveillance, antisubmarine operations and intelligence gathering have been key tasks for the Royal Air Force for much of its long history. When the Nimrod was finally retired from service in 2011, the type had operated with distinction for over 40 years in all these roles, and more. Nimrod R.1 XV249 is one of only four R.1’s produced from a total Nimrod production run of 46 aircraft. The R.1 was an electronic-intelligence gathering variant, three of which originally entered service with the RAF in 1971. They carried up to 29 crew members and were involved in all major conflicts in the latter part of the 20th and early 21st centuries. When one of the original R.1 aircraft was lost following an accident in 1997, XV249 was selected as a replacement and, after conversion, served with No 51 Squadron from RAF Waddington. XV249 amassed over 18,000 flying hours during its service life and took part in operation Ellamy over Libya in 2011, thus remaining operational until its withdrawal from squadron service on 28 June 2011. During its earlier career, the aircraft on display at the Museum was flown by the Museum’s Curator, ex RAF Pilot Al McLean. Al has played a pivotal role in developing the tours and has pulled upon his personal experiences flying Nimrods to tell some of the many stories experienced by crew members. RAF Museum Cosford Curator, Al McLean, said: “I flew on Nimrods for five years and have several memories of patrols in the Mediterranean, North Atlantic and North Sea. Finding the first Soviet aircraft carrier on one of its early out-of-area deployments was quite interesting. Given the importance of the aircraft and its unrivalled contribution to the frontline, the RAF Museum is pleased to be opening up the doors to this aircraft allowing our visitors to learn more about its long and faithful career.” Nimrod Tours are available on selected dates during August 2015. Tickets cost £5.00 per person and tours last 15 minutes (max 6 people per tour). Time slots can be pre-booked now via the Museum’s website. All children must be accompanied by an adult, tours are not recommended for children under the age of 5. For further information about the Museum, please visit the Museum website www.rafmuseum.org or call 01902 376200. The Museum is open daily from 10am and entry to the Museum is FREE of charge. 22
