A Word From Your MP.....

Last month, I dusted off my tour guiding credentials and joyfully welcomed the students of

Codsall Middle School to Parliament. I gave the traditional tour of the House of Commons, with a quick detour to The Chapel of St Mary Undercroft. I always find this obscure little area of Parliament totally awe inspiring, with its gold leaf, vaulted bays, clustered columns of polished Purbeck marble and ornate carvings of foliage, dragons and musical angels. Yet, this stunning little gilded chapel, set in the bowels of Westminster Hall, did not always exist in its current glorified state. Indeed, legend has it that by the time of the great fire of 1834, it had been used as both a wine cellar and – rather ignominiously – as a stable for Oliver Cromwell’s horses. Part of the Chapel had even been turned into a dining room for the Speaker of the Commons, and holes had been bored into the wall to accommodate the kitchen chimneys. Thankfully, due to its underground location, the Crypt Chapel managed to survive the fire mostly intact (excluding fairly significant damage to the stonework). It underwent heavy restoration between 1860 and 1870 by Charles Barry, who sought to reproduce the earlier medieval decoration and vaulting in a neo-Gothic style. During the time of the 1914 census, suffragette Emily Wilding hid in a broom closet within the chapel. By doing this, she was able to record her address on the night of the census as the ‘House of Commons,’ advancing her claim that women should be accorded the same political rights as men. As I can easily attest, having peered into the space a time or two, it is a very small closet. St. Mary Undercroft is still used today for various prestigious occasions. The children of peers, who possess the title of ‘The Honourable’, are able to use the chapel as a wedding venue. Members of parliament and peers also have the right to use the chapel for christenings. The body of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was famously kept in St Mary Undercroft on the night before her funeral, in April 2013, as was the body of Tony Benn, the long serving Labour politician, ahead of his funeral in March 2014. The students of Codsall Middle School kindly humoured me as I happily explored the chapel’s nooks and crannies, before gleefully joining me on a spur of the moment trip to the Prime Minister’s office. It is times like these when I feel extremely humbled to be working in Parliament and I am incredibly aware of some of the huge boots that we have to fill.

PGA Golf Tips from Jeremy Nicholls at Ledene Golf Centre.....

Course management: If like all keen golfers you watched The Open from Royal Liverpool (Hoylake ) last month, you will be aware of how demanding a links course can be. This is when the top professionals come into their own by managing their game around an extremely tough test of golf in a style of golf which they won’t be accustomed too on a regular basis on the P.G.A Tour and European Tour. Before the tournament starts the professionals will have devised a course strategy with their caddies which will entail using a wide variety of clubs from their bag.. You will see that the professionals will not always use a driver from the tee, they will use a fairway wood or even an iron to ensure they give themselves every chance of hitting the fairway, to avoid the penal rough and pot bunkers which is like dropping a shot if you enter one off the tee. When around the greens, with the undulations and fast running greens they will vary their pitch shots some carrying 4 wedges to enable them to hit pitch and run shots and soft floating lob shots. A lesson that club golfers can learn from watching the professionals last month, is it’s not just about hitting a driver on every par 4/5 or if there is a certain hole on your course that you struggle with mentally which ruins your card in the monthly medal, then from the tee use a fairway wood or iron to safely hit the fairway avoiding the hazards which will in turn lower your scores. .Course Management Tips: *Use a fairway wood or iron off the tee, on a hole with lots of hazards especially if the hole is short in length. *Around the greens, utilise all your wedges use a chip and run shot when the opportunity arises as apposed to your lob wedge as this is an easier shot to execute . *When faced with a difficult lie in a bunker especially if the ball is resting up the face come out sideways as opposed to leaving it in the bunker and taking several more shots. *If lying in deep rough from a poor tee shot don’t be over ambitious with the club you are using. Use a club with as much loft as possible (eg) a 9 or a pitching wedge play yourself back on to the fairway. It will still be possible to make a par from this position as apposed to leaving the ball in the deep rough and running up a much higher score.
