PGA Golf Tips from Jeremy Nicholls at Ledene Golf Centre..... Keeping Your Swing Thoughts Simple - When approached about golf lessons one of the first comments sometimes made to me is “you ‘re not going to rip my swing apart” the fact of the matter is your average club player doesn’t want an over technical golf lesson , they want a simple solution to their swing faults which they can use to help them win their monthly medal. If you have been struggling with your game due to lack of practice during the winter months. Have a look at these basic fundamentals below and see if you are achieving these points when setting up to the golf ball. • GRIP - Make sure the club is comfortable in your fingers allowing you to hinge your wrists and release the club head properly. • BODY ALIGNMENT - Make sure the shoulders, hips and feet are pointing at your intended target • POSTURE - Creating and maintaining the angle at address throughout the swing will help the club move on its correct path into the ball •BALL POSITION - With the longer clubs eg driver/fairway/rescue clubs –inside the left heel, 5 iron/pitching wedge – middle of the feet. Hopefully these simple reminders in your set up position will be of some use whilst practicing on the range. Ledene Golf Centre, Wood Road, 01902 847123 or 07711902149 play@ledenegolf.co.uk 4

BEST KEPT VILLAGE COMPETITION 2015 – 60th ANNIVERSARY Christmas is over and the New Year celebrations have finished, so it’s now time to begin thinking about Staffordshire’s Best Kept village (BKV) Competition. The competition is entering its 60th year in 2015, and it seems just as relevant now as it was when it began in 1956. Any village in Staffordshire can enter BKV and over 200 have done so since the competition started. There were 57 entries in 2014 and the BKV Working Group (which organises BKV on behalf of the Community Council of Staffordshire) would like to see 60 entries in 2015. The competition is not about creating a pretty village, the focus of BKV is on community spirit and involvement. Residents of all ages, local organisations and volunteer groups all work together in those villages which do really well in the competition to maintain and improve the appearance of their village, their various amenities and their general environment. Villages need to register their intention to enter the BKV competition by Monday 23 February, with full entry dtails not required until Monday 30 March 2015. The BKV competition relies on a large group of volunteer judges, but a number of these retire each year, for varying reasons. Some new judges have already been recruited, but more are likely to be needed. Chris Welch, Chief Executive of the Community Council of Staffordshire said: “We could use a few more judges, so if you would like to be involved, please get in touch with the Community Council (ask for Liz Sanderson on 01785 242525). We can promise you a couple of interesting days of judging in the beautiful villages throughout Staffordshire – with guaranteed sun and blue skies!” There will be trophies and prize money, provided by the sponsors of the Best Kept Village in each Area. Shields will be awarded to the County Winners. If you would like more information on the Best Kept Village Competition and the complementary Children’s Competitions; advice and guidance on how to enter BKV or would like to be a judge, please contact the Community Council on 01785 242525 or email communitycouncil@staffs.org.uk

A Word From Your MP.........
Visiting local schools across my constituency is always a real
pleasure, whether it be for a ‘Question Time’ style grilling by pupils or a presentation of awards, highlighting the academic success of students over the past school year. I was therefore delighted to be invited to Codsall High School to congratulate pupils on their hard work. We are extremely lucky in South Staffordshire to have schools offering such a high quality of education. Much of this is down to the extreme hard work and dedication of the teaching staff, but it is impossible for them to do their job without a continued financial support. One of the schemes that the Government has introduced to improve Priority Schools Building Programme, which provides funding for school building renovations. So far, none of the schools in my constituency have benefited from any of these schemes and have had a particularly poor time in terms of benefiting from any capital schemes in relation to school buildings, having not received any major investment for over two decades. It is time this changed and I have called on Ministers to consider South Staffordshire for funding schemes for much needed renovations. I have recently visited schools which are in desperate need of renovation to buildings and upgrades to their facilities and have called on the Secretary of State for Education to look into these cases as a matter of urgency. I am keen to ensure that first class teaching that pupils receive and deserve are matched with a first class environment. For far too long, rural constituencies, like South Staffordshire, have received far less in total national funding per head, compared to those in urban areas. In December of last year, I met with the Minister for Schools, David Laws MP, along with other MPs that represent constituencies in the Staffordshire region, to call on the Department of Education to push for equal funding for schools in South Staffordshire. David Laws agreed to conduct a review with Staffordshire County Council on funding to see if there could be better funding for schools in the area going forward. Funding for education in South Staffordshire is improving, but there is still much that can be done. Our pupils deserve an equal investment in their education and I intend to push Ministers to guarantee that students in South Staffordshire get the very best deal we can get for them. One of my aims since being elected as an MP is to fight for fairer funding for schools in South Staffordshire and I aim to continue this work to ensure that our schools gain a fair deal and that our pupils continue to receive the best education.
