Tips from Your Local PGA Pro at Ledene Golf Centre As winter arrives more of your golf practice will take place on the driving range. During our recent free golf tips evenings on the driving range at Ledene (Codsall Pages readers are welcome) lots of people will choose the longer clubs in their golf bags when they start their practice i.e. drivers and fairway woods, as opposed to starting with the more lofted clubs i.e. pitching wedges and 9 irons. So this month we will try to incorporate a simple routine to help your practice sessions on the driving range be more productive. 1.Firstly a few stretches to loosen muscles. A popular stretching exercise would be to hold the club behind your upper back, gripping either end of the club, rotate your body to the right as you would when taking a swing, then rotate back to the left, keeping your lower body still. Side Bends - Hold club with hands wider than the shoulders, raise the club above the head, arms straight, lean to the right as far as you comfortably can feeling the stretch on the left side, repeat to the left. 2.Try to incorporate the same pre-shot routine that you would use on the course on the range. Take note of the basic fundamentals of your golf swing, like your grip, posture and your body alignment and always look to aim towards a specific target on the range. (don’t hit balls randomly) 3.Begin with your wedges/short irons, hitting about 20 balls. Then repeat with your long irons, then finally with your fairway woods and driver. 4.Now work your way back down through your clubs, so after your driver and fairway woods, go back to your long irons, short irons and finally wind down your practice session with a few wedges to finish off with. When golf courses are closed during the winter due to adverse weather conditions, the driving range gives you the ideal opportunity to keep practising to maintain the consistency and timing of your golf swing. It also helps you become familiar with your clubs and understand how your clubs work for you. By using the yardage markers on the range you can assess how far you hit each club, Try to envisage hitting down a fairway by using the different markers on the range. Hopefully this will make your practice session more constructive and enjoyable and will lead to lower scores when you get back on the golf course.

Several of you may know that, during the recent Government re-shuffle, I was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Prime Minister. Unlike the role of Minister or Secretary of State, the position of PPS is little known outside the echelons of Westminster. It is the first rung of the Government ladder and, as the Speaker would say, primarily involves carrying bags and passing notes. On being appointed PPS to David Cameron, I had already spent stints working as a PPS to the Secretary of State for Transport, the Rt. Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP, and the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, the Rt. Hon Owen Paterson MP. However, I quickly realised that the tasks I would be asked to undertake as PPS to David Cameron would bear little resemblance to those that I was asked to carry out in any former assignments. The most significant change is the amount of influence that my new role provides. Not only do I attend daily briefings with the PM, but I also have the opportunity to sit in on the weekly Cabinet meetings. He did, though, quickly point out that it wasn’t my role to speak in them. However, by far and away the best bit of my new job, as far as I am concerned, is the opportunity that it provides me to be a strong voice for South Staffordshire at the heart of Government. As always, South Staffordshire continues to be my first priority and the main focus of all my efforts. When deliberating on any issue, the question of how it will impact our home is always my first consideration and the primary means by which I arrive at a decision. The past year was one of many challenges, but also several triumphs, such as the securement of a new section of dual carriageway on Wobaston Road, which will significantly reduce delays for any residents of Codsall driving into Wolverhampton. As we enter into the New Year, I feel that we have much to celebrate and I hope that 2014 will prove to be an even better year than the last.To contact me call 01902 846616 or 0207 219 7150
