PGA Golf Tips from Jeremy Nicholls at South Staffs Golf Club Academy..... Get the most out of your practice on the driving range Over the coming weeks with the inclement weather setting in and the courses becoming unplayable, a lot of your practice will be done on the driving range. Here are a few tips to get the most out of your practice sessions and make them productive. Step 1. Don’t start off with a driver Build up your sessions starting with wedges, then short irons, finishing the session with your hybrid and driver. Don't rush through the balls. Go through a pre-shot routine similar to what you would use on the course before hitting a shot, including one or two practice swings. Step 2. Hit to specific targets don’t hit balls aimless. The range will feature small greens or landing areas marked with yardages. Test your distance and accuracy by trying to land your ball as close to the markers as possible. When using your driver, simulate a fairway by trying to land your shot between two sets of flags or markers. Step 3. To wind down your practice session don’t neglect your short game; try and hit 10/15 pitch shots towards the various pitching nets on the range this will hopefully keep your short game sharp for when you return to the course.

A Word From Gavin Williamson............... I would like to wish all of you in Codsall a very happy new year. As we enter 2016, we inevitably think about the events of the year that has just passed us by. South Staffordshire has not been short of interesting things to report back on. We’ve had an election, huge successes in many campaigns and played host to many fantastic events. I have been busy campaigning both in the General Election and in many of our local campaigns, whether it be fairer funding for our schools or calling for more apprenticeship opportunities for young people across South Staffordshire. Just before Christmas I was invited to the Codsall Christmas Fair and Carols around the Christmas Tree. Because of the success of the carols around the tree in the past, I was delighted to learn that the organising committee expanded the event so that it gave residents the opportunity to spend an entire afternoon and early evening at the Christmas Fair with trade stalls, live music, hot food and a host of other events. Joining Codsall residents for Carols around the Christmas Tree is one of my favourite annual events. I am delighted that organisers have put so much effort in this year to make it such a huge community event. There is always an incredible turnout and such a wonderful festive atmosphere throughout the village. It is also always great to see the Salvation Army and numerous other local organisations joining in with the celebrations. The organising committee did such a fantastic job of bringing all this together so perfectly and as we all gathered around the tree and sang together, it truly felt like Christmas had begun. The past year has been one of many challenges, but also several triumphs. As we enter into the New Year, I feel that we have so much to celebrate and I hope that 2016 will prove to be an even better year than the last. I am looking forward to spending every minute I can, continuing to speak to and spending more time with local residents across Codsall and I wish you the best of luck with your endeavours over the year ahead.
