The last month has been extremely busy, following my debate on the promotion of manufacturing in the West Midlands. This is an issue that has always been at the very forefront of my mind since getting elected, not only because I worked in the manufacturing sector myself before entering parliament, but also because it plays such an important role in South Staffordshire. In 2011, there were 3,600 employees in the manufacturing industry in South Staffordshire. This accounted for 15.7 percent of all employees in the area. While manufacturing is incredible important to the economy of the local area, we cannot take it for granted that it will continue to thrive and, indeed, over the past 15 years, we have seen a gradual decline in the sector. I was particularly happy to see South Staffordshire somewhat bucking that trend, with the investment announced by Jaguar Land Rover to build their new engine factory in my constituency. Since the debate, I have continued to work to get further manufacturing investment and it is my hope that, in the coming months, we are going to be able to announce yet more good news, resulting in well over a hundred million pounds worth of extra investment coming into South Staffordshire. Another long standing campaign of mine is to see the M54 motorway resurfaced with low noise tarmac. Following on from last year’s debate on the issue, I have continued to fight to bring about the replacement of the existing concrete slabs, which create significant noise pollution. I was recently able to secure a commitment that the motorway would be re-surfaced with low noise tarmac within ten years. However, I don’t consider that enough is being done or that it is being done quickly enough. I therefore secured a meeting with the Roads Minister, Stephen Hammond, to press the case to have the road re-surfaced more quickly. Unfortunately, he was unable to commit to shortening the time frame within which this would be achieved. The noise emanating from the M54 has a real impact on people’s lives and I will continue to press for the Minister to re-look at this and to see if there is any way that we can bring forward the program to re-surface the M54 any closer than the currently stated ten years. If there are any issues that you would like to raise with me personally, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I look forward to welcoming any of you to my new office, should you wish to visit. Tips from Your Local PGA Pro at Ledene Golf Centre This month we will look at using the correct grip on your golf club. Having your hands positioned on the club correctly while addressing the golf ball is important to help you to create the correct club face angle in to the ball at the impact position. Many beginners grip the club to high up in the palm of the left hand and this will result in poor hinging of the club in the backswing, and in the down swing will slow the club head down leading to a poor release of the club. This will lead to a lack of power and distance in your shots. • Place the club across the fingers so that it rests on the base of the little finger along to the first joint of the index finger. • When placed across the base of the fingers on the left hand, the thumb should rest on the grip and be positioned just slightly down the right, as you look down you should see a “V” shape created between the thumb and forefinger. • Now bring your right hand to the club with your palm facing the target, you should gently close the fingers around the grip with the forefinger cocked slightly to form a trigger, with the little finger on the right hand resting between the index finger and middle finger of the left hand. The “V” formed by the thumb and forefinger should point somewhere between chin and right shoulder. So remember the two hands on the grip should work as one unit and not independently and without gripping the club to tight these few points should help you to hit the ball straighter and with a more powerful ball flight.
