Tips from Your Local PGA Pro at Ledene Golf Centre Using the Correct Ball Position in Golf: This month we are going to look at ball position a vital part of the set up position which if not achieved correctly can lead to the path of the club swinging inconsistently into the ball causing an array of poor shots. The position of the ball can be overlooked by beginners and even the more experienced golfers who have not been playing regularly due to the recent poor weather. Ball Position with your Driver and Woods: When using your driver the ball should be placed just inside your left heel (for right handed golfers). This is because the driver has the least loft and with the ball in this position you will hit the ball on the up swing enabling you to hit your tee shots higher and further. Ball Position when using your Irons: •Long irons place the ball one ball back from from your driver position. •Mid irons place one or two balls back. •Short irons place ball in centre of your stance. Ball Position in a Pitch and Chip Shot: The ball position will be more to the back of your stance, so you will hit into the back of the ball with a descending strike allowing the loft of the club to get the ball into the air. Summary: Hopefully with the correct ball position this will help when setting yourself up to play the various shots encountered on a golf course. Incorporate this when practicing on the driving range and see how the correct positioning of the ball will not only improve your striking of the ball but will help you achieve a more consistent ball flight. Key points being the ball with your driver or fairway woods is positioned inside the left heel to launch the ball up for distance and with your irons positioned more to the middle of your stance helping to compress the ball onto the club face leading to a better strike.

A Word From Your MP It was with great pleasure that I started reading Roald Dahl’s George’s Marvellous Medicine, last month. Growing up, this used to be one of my favourite books and, 30 years later, it still made me smile. In case you are becoming concerned, I didn’t just pick up this book on a whim. No, it was National Storytelling Week and I was giving a reading of my favourite childhood novel to the pupils of a local primary school. National Storytelling Week was a wonderful opportunity to encourage children’s interest in reading, something that has given me a great deal of joy throughout my life. In celebration of the occasion, the school was a hosting a series of such events throughout the week, including a book cover competition and trips to its local library. I strongly believe that libraries are one of our most important local facilities and it was with great pleasure that I rounded off National Storytelling Week with my own visit to Codsall Library. During the visit, which took place on National Libraries Day, I was privileged take a tour of the building and meet the library employees. I was greatly impressed with the range of material on offer and the obvious dedication of the staff. Over the past few years, the nature of libraries has changed significantly, in response to a rapidly shifting demand. Today, libraries don’t just offer books. They offer computers, internet access, wifi and digital services - such as e-books and emagazines - as well as valuable community space. Despite this diversification, the number of visitors to our libraries has sadly been declining over recent years. Some might argue that this decline makes libraries an easy target for budget cuts. However, I believe that free access to educational material and literature is extremely important to our local community. The idea that anyone, rich or poor, can visit a library and access tools for learning is one that I think it is vital we protect. The county council recently opened a public consultation on local libraries. It wants to hear from members of the public about what they are looking for from a library service and how they can best adapt it to ensure that it is sustainable for the long term. These ideas will help form the options that will be formally consulted upon this summer. I urge everyone to make their voice heard and ensure that our libraries are not only protected, but optimised for the way in which local residents wish to use them today. If you would like to comment, you can e-mail: connectedlibraries@staffordshire.gov.uk or submit it online at: http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/leisure/librariesnew/Shape-yourlibrary-service.. Leaflets are also available to fill in at every Staffordshire library. To contact me call 01902 846616 or 0207 219 7150
