A Word From Gavin WIlliamson......... I am always extremely proud the amount of volunteer organisations that we have in South Staffordshire. We are so lucky to have a wide variety of local charities and support groups, and it is a huge comfort to live in an area where you know that this kind of support is readily available to us. Recently I gave the keynote speech at the AGM of the South Staffordshire Community and Voluntary Action (SSCVA) group masterclass in Codsall. The SSCVA, of which I am a patron, is a fantastic group of volunteers who provide invaluable support to those in our society who need that extra bit of help. They are inspiring people and I am honoured to support the group and their Volunteer Award. In fact I was so inspired by the group that last year I launched my own Volunteer Award to recognise the contributions of volunteers across South Staffordshire who have gone that extra mile. The SSCVA do such a fantastic job and I hope that many more people will take part in this extremely rewarding activity. I also took tea with members of another community group the Church in the Village, which meet in the Codsall ForgetMe-Not Club in Station Road. The group meets once a month on the last Friday of the month at 2.30pm for afternoon tea, cakes and music. I met with members and discussed local issues that were important to them. It is always a treat visiting groups such as these. I really enjoy sitting down with members over a cup of tea to chat about the local area. The Church in the Village is another brilliant example of a successful and vital group in South Staffordshire, bringing the community together and offering companionship to people who might not be able to get out and about as often as they used to. It is easy to think that these days we are heading towards a breakdown of the traditional community spirit, but groups such as the SSCVA and the Church in the Village show us that our community spirit is still alive and well in Codsall and right across South Staffordshire.

In last months article we informed you of our up and coming joint venture with South Staffs Golf Club. For those of you who are possibly thinking of taking up golf, we offer not only individual tuition but a number of group sessions that we run at the Academy to get you into golf, whether you’re a senior, lady or junior. Our facilities also include covered and floodlit driving range, grass tee, chipping and putting areas , as well as a 18 hole Par 3, ideal for beginners and also for the more established golfer looking to sharpen their short game. Saturday Morning Junior Golf Academy: This is held every Saturday morning for 50 weeks of the year. The academy is run over 2 – 1 hour sessions. The 10-11am session is the advanced group who have been attending for some time and juniors who have some knowledge and ability regarding the basics of golf. The 11-12pm group is our “Get into Golf” session aimed at beginners and introducing juniors to the game of golf. The cost of these sessions are £4, this includes any clubs hired and range balls used during the hour. The sessions are aimed at keeping the juniors interested and motivated, covering all aspects of the game, starting with chipping, putting, range work and with the advanced group several holes played on the course when the weather permits. The beginners group, once they become more confident will also play a hole or 2 with myself so that they also begin to learn the etiquette of the game. Seniors Days: These days were introduced to encourage the retired golfer (over 60’s) especially during the week, when the course has quiet periods so we offer a discount to attract them to play. The senior days are Tuesday and Thursdays and we offer 18 holes on the par 3 at a discounted rate of £4. Both days are very popular and well attended. Ladies Mornings: We run these on alternate Fridays during the year. The aim is to introduce and get more ladies playing golf in a relaxed and informal environment. This group has a good core group of 8-10 ladies, with ladies joining us see if the game of golf is for them, and some progress to play on full size courses as well. Our Ladies mornings aim to bring together ladies who wish to enjoy a social game of golf with other ladies, both on these mornings as well as meeting up at other times to play. The mornings begin with the ladies meeting up in Café for coffee, between 9.30-10.00am, followed by 45 minutes group tuition with myself, we cover all aspects of the game, range to cover basics, grip, posture etc. chipping, putting, bunker practice, and any other issues the ladies raise regarding their game. This is followed by 18 holes on the par 3 course. The cost of our ladies morning is £10.00 all inclusive.

At Smartkids we tailor the learning for our children so that we can develop truly independent learners. Our children come to us for tuition in all subjects; Computer Skills, Maths, English, SATs practice, 11+ tuition Languages and GCSE are just some of the subjects they study. We even run a homework club staffed by our qualified teachers. This not only helps the children, but is also great for their parents as it takes the stress away from them. We use computers to deliver our learning programmes. What makes us different is that many of our learners are working towards nationally recognised computer qualifications, and although many of them are still very young, they pass GCSE equivalent exams. With no exam nerves whatsoever, our success rate is 100%. All our learners are supported by “helpers”; older students who have passed their computer exams with us, and who now work as mentors for the younger ones. We also specialise in helping children with learning difficulties. Although they love learning, they often come because they find school frustrating and at Smartkids they can learn in a relaxed environment with teachers who understand their needs.
