A Word From Your MP Part of an MP’s duties involve questioning public officials and calling on them to account for their actions. It is a major part of our job to fight for the interests of our constituents and demand answers on their behalf. It was therefore a bit of a role reversal when, last Friday, I found myself in the panel at Question Time. Now – in the spirit of honesty - I feel that I should clarify that I was not filmed and then broadcast at 10.35pm on BBC1. No, I was live. Even worse, I was live in front of an audience that I didn’t know and could say with complete certainty wouldn’t vote for me – well at least for another couple of years. I was taking part in Question Time at Codsall High School. The event, which was being put on to celebrate Local Democracy Week, was expertly organised by the Pattingham Youth Forum and supported by the Staffordshire Council of Voluntary Youth Services (SCVYS). My courageous fellow panellists included South Staffordshire Police PCSO Ashley Tooth, Codsall High School headteacher Marjorie Tunnicliffe and former RE teacher and Parish Councillor Penny Allen. We were also fortunate to be able to welcome on the day a delegation of nine youth workers from Japan, who were being hosted in the area by the SCVYS. There are few things more terrifying for a politician than being asked probing questions by a large crowd of impressionable young students. I would like to say they took it easy on me, but they didn’t. They grilled us mercilessly. I have long felt that the questions people ask show more about who they are and what they know than the answers that they give. I must admit, I have been questioned less rigorously by a bevy of professional journalists, so the staff of Codsall High School are obviously doing an excellent job training the minds of our local youth. Over the course of 45 minutes, we covered issues ranging from equal marriage and grade boundaries to the voting age, tuition fees and challenging traditional stereotypes. As a young Conservative MP, who went to a comprehensive and grew up in Yorkshire, I am extremely aware of how important it is not to bow to the expectations that have been set for you, but instead forge your own path. When I was young, I visited Parliament and realised that I wanted to become an MP. I hope this Local Democracy Week may have similarly inspired a few of the students of Codsall High School to become engaged in the democratic process and potentially become involved in politics themselves in the future. Blue Branches Drama Academy is based on the Coven Road, Brewood. Alex Sutton who runs the school prides herself on the individual experience each student needs. Taking children from 4 upwards, she runs classes almost every day of the week after school and on weekends. Classes teach an entire spectrum of theatre craft, from acting ability and LAMDA exams to stage costume and set. ‘Drama and acting is a fantastic confidence builder’, Miss Sutton says, ‘having to not only perform in front of many, but also prepare for that moment can boost a child’s esteem in many areas of their life’. The techniques at BBDA clearly work, as this past summer 100% of LAMDA examinations taken were past, 15% with a pass rating, 50% with merit and 35% with the highest grading of distinction. However Miss Sutton clearly states, ‘we are not based upon our grades and children only take them when they are ready. BBDA is about each individual and what they want to get out of the experience and being able to present that to others’. Students perform three times a year, most recently at ‘Somerford Hall’ in Brewood. Holiday days are also available, from Halloween scares to full summer schools.

Class prices start from £4 and more information can be found at www.bluebranchesdramaacademy.co.uk. or call on 07794084773 or 01902 851682.

Tips from Your Local PGA Pro at Ledene Golf Centre As winter approaches, the adverse weather conditions mean that more of your practice will take place on the driving range, it is a good time to work on certain aspects of your game but one key element of the swing is your posture, in other words how you set up to the golf ball. An incorrect posture can lead to all types of poor shots so here is a few points to help you set up to the ball correctly Posture At The Address Position: Ensure your feet are shoulder width apart not too narrow or wide as this will restrict your legs from working properly during the swing, then from the hips tilt your spinal angle forward your weight should not be to forward on your toes or back on your heels, but the weight should feel evenly distributed on the balls of your feet, this will give you a good solid base to work from. With the knees slightly flexed, the arms hanging comfortably from the shoulders, and with your head not resting on your chest, you should now be in a good position to start your swing. A good posture is important to every club in your bag, taking into account the shorter clubs, the spinal angle will be tilting more forwards, and feel more vertical when using the longer clubs. Remember to try to maintain the angles you have created at the address position, this will enable the arms and club to move more freely around your body. If the arms and club feel as though they are fighting the body especially during the downswing, the angles you created at the set up are not being maintained. Hopefully if you practice this routine on the range you will start to see the benefits when you go on the course. Our Golf Tips Evening on the range start on Monday 18th November 6.00-7.30pm. (Everyone Welcome)ou to help fix any faults you may have had with your back swing.

All ages will take part from the youngsters of 3 to the adult tappers in a variety of routines in ballet, tap, acrobatics, disco, and musical comedy. The Suttie School of Dance was formed in 1976, as part of the MASD association, by Carol who still teaches today together with her nieces Kay & Amy and other teachers and helpers. Classes are on a Saturday for the younger pupils at Holy Cross Church hall in Bilbrook and each year pupils take examinations (the school has 100% success rate) and take part in the show at the Grand Theatre. Carol makes all of the stunning costumes for the dancers and that is some task with the number of pupils involved.
