Tips from Your Local PGA Pro at Ledene Golf Centre Gardenlands Garden & Leisure supports schools to ‘Grow & Learn’ Gardenlands Garden & Leisure’s NEW Grown & Learn initiative is a great opportunity for schools to get their pupils hands on with gardening and learn about the benefits of growing your own. Schools have always been a vital part of Gardenlands work and throughout the year they hold a variety of regular KidsClub planting workshops, events and parties, face painting, fancy dress and colouring competitions. Grow & Learn is an extension of this and is a gardening club that has been created especially for schools. By joining the free club, schools will be offered free specialist advice sessions (including school trips and onsite advice), fantastic discounts on plants and gardening products, raffle prizes for Christmas & Summer Fetes, competitions for schools and pupils and the dedicated support of the store’s Events Co-ordinator to help with any other support they may need. With gardening set to become part of the National Curriculum, Grow & Learn is a fantastic opportunity to give children a real life insight into the world of gardening.

For more information about Grow & Learn, please contact Becky James on 01902 700588 or rebecca.james@g-l.co.uk Address: Gardenlands, Garden & Leisure, Bridgnorth Road, Shipley, Wolverhampton, WV6 7EJ

In last months article we looked at setting the club correctly at the halfway stage of the back swing(when the club shaft is parallel to the ground),following on to this month article we will look at the next stage of the back swing in the completion of the clubs journey from the half way back position to the top of the back swing. The position you get the club into at the top of your backswing is going to largely influence your downswing and the path of the club into the ball. So here are a few check points:• Always remember your posture when setting up to the ball which is a key element to a good swing. • It is key to start your takeaway correctly (see last months article), the club shaft is parallel to the ground and the butt end is pointing at your intended target. When you have achieved this correct position continue turning the shoulders and begin to hinge your wrists slightly, when hinging the wrists do not lift the arms. • As the wrists start to hinge continue to complete your shoulder turn to the top of your backswing, the shoulders should feel as they have turned at a 90 degree angle, with Your arms and club rotating around your spinal angle. • The left hand and club face should be parallel to the ground and the shaft of your golf club should feel as if its pointing through your right shoulder. • One final thought always try to maintain the flex in your right knee during the back swing,do not let it straighten as this can change the angle and path of the club. Hopefully the last two months articles should enable you to help fix any faults you may have had with your back swing.

A Word From Your MP As the nights draw in, the leaves on the trees begin to fall and summer becomes a distant memory. This is the period when many of us start to think about Christmas and the New Year, yet there is still at least one occasion, in the run up to these popular holidays, that I would urge everyone to keep in mind during the festive rush. In an MP’s calendar, one of the most important days is always Remembrance Sunday, when communities across South Staffordshire come together to pay our silent respects to those who gave so much so that we might enjoy our freedoms of today. This year, I will have the privilege of laying my wreath of remembrance at Codsall. When this is done, we will be just one year away from the centenary of the start of the First World War, a war that saw immense sacrifice from every town and village across the country. As part of this - and to try and help encourage a new generation of young people to remember and understand the sacrifices of those who tragically lost their lives in battle - I am urging all parish council members and local residents to consider applying to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for community projects to learn more about the First World War. HLF is making at least £1 million a year available until 2019 as part of the First World War: then and now programme for small, community grants. It will provide grants of £3,000 to £10,000, enabling groups throughout across the UK to explore, conserve and share their First World War heritage and deepen their understanding of the impact of the conflict. Examples of potential projects include researching, identifying and recording local heritage, developing new interpretation of heritage through exhibitions, trails and smartphone apps, and researching, writing and performing creative material based on heritage sources. I know that our local community will pull together on this occasion, as it does on so many others. The great sense of community in Codsall is one of the things that first drew me to want to live in the village and I feel incredibly lucky to be somewhere where there are so many regular events to attend. In the past month alone, I have been invited to take part in numerous local activities, including helping out behind the bar at the recent Codsall Beer Festival and measuring sunflowers at the Codsall Tallest Sunflower Competition. These events may not possess the gravitas of a memorial day or the virtues of a charity fundraiser, but they act as the glue that helps keep our local society together and Codsall would be a far less happy place to live without them.
