Chip and Run Shot Around the Greens Not always will your game go according to plan from tee to green, so sharpening your short game can be a particular asset in maintaining a respectable score. This month we will look at the chip and run shot, which you can execute around the green, especially from the fringe of the green or when the green has undulating slopes on it. 1. Try to visualise the shot in your mind, a good rule is to look to carry the ball a third of the way to the hole and let it roll the remaining two-thirds to the hole. (Remember the idea of this shot is less air time but more time the ball will travel along the ground) 2. You can use a variation of clubs for this shot (from a 7-89 iron to a pitching wedge), make sure the stance is narrow with the ball positioned towards the back of the stance and the knees are in a flexed position, the weight of the body and the shaft of the golf club are leaning slightly to the left with your arms hanging down from your shoulders. Adopt the stroke you would use with a putter, take the club back with the stroke being controlled by the shoulders and arms. 3. A poorly hit chip and run shot will have a less disastrous effect than a poor pitch shot with your lob wedge. Codsall Dramatic Society Presents
Henceforward… By Alan Ayckbourn
Weds 23rd – Sat 26th Sept Codsall Village Hall Abandoned by his wife and child, left to live alone for 4 years, composer Jerome is no longer able to write music. An obsessional user of every form of technology, he lives in a dangerously lawless suburb surrounded by cameras and recording systems. But, he needs to have his daughter back (in order to work again). Meanwhile, he has used his talents to programme a robot, a NAN300F, which he uses to win over his wife and the social worker. Our production of Henceforward is set some time quite soon, but relies on current technology to bring Jerome’s sad existence into focus. Poignant, funny, with even a touch of slapstick, we hope our Autumn production leaves you moved and thoughtful. Codsall Village Hall, Wolverhampton Road, Codsall, WV8 1PL Wed 23rd Sept at 7:30 pm, £6.50 Thu 24th & Fri 25th Sept at 7:30pm, £7.50 Sat 26th Sept at 2:30pm, £7.50 Tickets available from Codsall Crafts and Models (formerly Knit N Stitch), Codsall and Ian Rigby Jewellers, Birches Bridge, call our Box Office 01902 267322. A Word From Gavin Williamson...............
Although I may not be the sportiest of people, I really enjoy visiting groups of talented individuals and seeing how working as a team benefits them and their communities. With the Ashes test match being played in near-by Edgbaston and Brewood’s answer to the Tour de France zipping through South Staffordshire, we are spoilt for choice with the wide variety of sport we have to enjoy. This month I was proud to support the first Codsall Community Group Cross Country Race in and around Oaken Fields. The idea came from a young Codsall resident who proposed the idea for a cross country race around the area. As we have come to expect from Codsall, local organisations such as Codsall Parish Council, Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club and The Codsall Community Group came together to make the idea a reality. Unusually for sporting events that I attend, we were very lucky to be blessed with such beautiful weather. The race began at Oaken Drive, Codsall opposite Codsall Railway Station and each leg of the course was approximately 1.5 miles, run on public ground, public footpaths and included a small 300m section of minor road between Oaken Lane and Oaken Drive, in Oaken village centre. This community relay event was open to all ages and abilities and teams consisted of 4 runners in 7 different categories including primary school, middle school, family, workplace and male and female teams bringing all areas of the community together. After completing the race, all participants were awarded commemorative medals to honour them taking part in the race. Local sponsors including the Parish Council and local businesses assisted in the hosting of the event. It is hoped that after the success of the run it will become an annual event. I would like to thank the Codsall Community Group, Codsall Parish Council and Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club for holding this fantastic race. Once again it is proven how our community groups come together to create such a wonderful event. The Codsall Community Group put a lot of time and effort clearing and preparing Oaken Field in preparation for the run. I do hope that the success of the race encourages those involved in organising the race to make this an annual event, allowing more residents in Codsall to get involved in sport.
