Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody “

When the reminder comes round that it’s time to write my next offering for the Perton Pages, I often wonder if anyone actually reads them! I know folks from the church family do - but perhaps they feel duty-bound! So it was very encouraging, when I was shopping in the village recently, that a lady who recognised me took the time to tell me that she reads my words and often finds them interesting. Thank you to that lady! Her encouragement isn’t just good for my ego(!), it’s important to me, because I really appreciate the opportunity Perton Pages gives me, because I am your Vicar. I took assembly at the Middle School this week and I tried to get across to the students that I am their Vicar. I’m not just the Vicar for the church family. As I said to the students, I don’t sit in church praying all day! I am the Vicar of Perton and am here for everyone in the community - having said that, Perton is quite a large community, so please don’t all come at once! But seriously, I am your Vicar. I am here for you. I am here to hear. If you’d ever appreciate talking to someone, and not necessarily about spiritual things, I am here to listen. And, although I don’t sit in church praying all day, I do pray for our village. I am your Vicar. I am here to hear. Rev Julia Cody

A Word From Your MP In politics, I am sometimes astounded by the stupidity of some ideas that are put forward. The latest such idea was proposed by Staffordshire County Council, which is seeking to change its rules on home to school transport. This will mean that many children, who have previously received home to school transport, will in the future have to pay £380 per child, per year. For a family with two or three children, this is a great burden and something that I am continuing to campaign against, as I fear it is almost a tax upon education and opportunity. The County Council’s proposals will mean that many children in South Staffordshire will no longer receive free home to school transport and, instead, will be forced to find the money to pay for it. Furthermore, it is not just these families that are likely to be impacted by this new policy. The potential consequences could be far wider. It is my fear that many families will be in the situation of having to look at sending their children to schools not within the county of Staffordshire, but potentially in neighbouring authorities such as Wolverhampton. The outcome of this could be a dramatic drop in pupil numbers in many of our excellent middle schools and high schools. This, in itself, could jeopardise the very future of the schools that act as the beating heart of our villages. I have already met with the leader of the County Council to voice my deep concern over this policy and I will carry on leading a campaign to ensure that this ridiculous idea is defeated. But, could I also ask of you – if you believe that the viability of our schools is an important concern whether you could also take part in the consultation and voice your opposition to these ill thought out proposals. How to object: You can obtain more information about the scheme or submit your views online by visiting: www.staff ordshire.gov.uk/transportconsultation. You can send any comments via post to: Transport Consultation, Staffordshire County Council, Tipping Street, Stafford, ST16 2DH OR e-mail your opinion to: transportconsultation@staffordshire.gov.uk. All comments must be received by 12th July, 2013, to be taken into consideration by Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet. A number of drop-in sessions have also been arranged and the dates, and venues, can be found on the County Council website or by calling 0300 111 8000. PERTON GARDENING CLUB JULY IN THE GARDEN Your borders should now have caught up with the calendar after such a late start, so to ensure that you get the best from your plants dead head and feed them regularly. Keep borders weeded and mulched and stake taller plants where necessary. Prune shrubs that have finished flowering, cutting back to fresh new growth. Feed and dead head roses, except for those hip bearing varieties. Trim hedges now or in August, the growth rate slows down as autumn approaches so if they are pruned now they will stay looking neat throughout the winter. For larger leaved hedges such as holly or laurel try using secateurs instead of shears, this way you can get a neater finish with no tattered edges. Harvest vegetables as they mature and remove any plants that have finished cropping using the vacant ground for other crops. Sow the seed of spring cabbage, turnip, carrot, beet, parsley and winter spinach. Start planting autumn flowering bulbs such nerines and colchicums. Keep an eye on greenhouse temperatures and ventilate if need be, keep plants well watered. Ensure that rhododendrons are kept well watered to encourage the formation of next years flower buds and if you are going on holiday try to arrange for someone to come in and water your pots and baskets. With the summer here you will notice the rough is growing like mad, this makes the leaf really strong which doesn’t help you to get the club to the ball efficiently. When you are in the rough the most important thing to remember is to make sure you get out. Don't be greedy and attempt to hit the ball too far from heavy rough. You may only manage to shift it a few yards and end up in even worse trouble. So take a higher club than you might want to - a six or seven iron is about right - unless you have a really good lie. STEP ONE Grip down the shaft slightly and set up with the ball towards the back of your stance. Open the club face, aiming left of the target to compensate, to help bring the club through quicker. STEP TWO Take a three-quarter length swing - this will help generate more control. STEP THREE As the club descends try to accelerate even more than normal. It is vital to generate as much clubhead speed as possible to get through the thick grass. STEP FOUR Keep the hands firm so the clubface remains square to the ball through the shot and is not pulled off line by the grass. In long grass or heather, you need to use all your body weight not just your arms to free the ball. Emphasising the weight shift onto your front foot and the turn of your hips to help generate even more power. Feel yourself continue to turn after the ball has gone. I hope this helps, make the most of the next couple of months and get out and play. Lesson info email Jeremy@pertongolfclub.co.uk

Wild About Perton in July I was shocked when a free Wild About Perton ‘bee hotel’ was turned down because it was thought not safe near children. We argued to no avail that the bee hotel would only attract solitary bees that are not the least bit aggressive. This is because solitary bee nests are the work of a solitary female and there is no honey store to protect. Honey bees can be aggressive because they have a large store of honey which needs to be protected if it is to feed the many thousands of young bees produced by the hive. Only a small number of Britain’s 250 bees species are social and the majority of the social bees are bumblebees which also rarely sting. Bumblebees are often thought friendly because of their tubby and furry appearance and often black and yellow banded colour patterns. All bees unlike wasps are vegetarians. They gather pollen rich in protein and minerals and nectar rich in sugars from flowering plants to feed their young. As they scramble from flower to flower the bees are dusted with millions of pollen grains which pollinate other plants. Without bees humans would starve. Bees in Britain are in trouble with a steep decline in their numbers as a result of intensive agriculture and pests and diseases. So putting up a ‘bee hotel’ in your garden is good for us humans as well as good for bees. Wild About Perton leads a wildlife walk every first Saturday each month starting from Perton Library at 2.00 PM. On Friday12th July we are organising a bat walk led by the Staffs Bat Group. Join us at Perton Library at 9.15PM to see and hear Perton’s bats tumble through the air and skim over the lakes catching insects as they go.
