A Word From Your MP Often when I read the newspapers it seems that there are some stories that interest the media and politicians more than everybody else. One such example that occupied minds in Westminster and secured metres of column inches in print was the Government reshuffle which is also known as snakes and ladders. Watching this chain of events unfold was fascinating and I have to say that the atmosphere was electric. There were MPs huddled in corners and stories flying everywhere most likely circulated by Members and journalists themselves. The only person who really knows what is going on is the Prime Minister himself. He confides in close advisers but until the reshuffle is complete I think even they aren’t truly sure what is going on. On the day itself it quickly became apparent that Members invited to visit the Prime Minister in his office in the Commons were in line for the sack and those required to cross the road to Downing Street were in line for promotion. For many it is a time of make or break. The days afterwards are slightly awkward as you are not sure whether to commiserate or congratulate colleagues. It was a sorry time for those who lost their jobs despite obviously working hard but on the other hand it was good to see others getting recognition for work put in over the years. Entertaining stories also start to emerge of Ministers who tried to resign but emerged with promotion and ministers due for promotion who discovered there were no posts remaining. Only in Westminster could these situations occur. On a personal note as a Parliamentary Private Secretary I was pleased to hear that I would be moving from supporting the Northern Ireland Office to the Department for Transport. In Patrick McLoughlin, it is great to be supporting someone who started his working life as a miner in Cannock, is married to a girl from South Staffordshire, and who has gone on to be recognised as Secretary of State. To contact me call 01902 701479 or 0207 219 7150

PERTON GARDENING CLUB OCTOBER IN THE GARDEN
Now that October has arrived with the possibility of frost towards the end of the month thought should be given to bringing tender perennials in from the garden. Evergreen plants such as pelagoniums will continue to grow so will need a bright frost free place such as a greenhouse or conservatory, plants which lose their leaves or die back completely can be kept in a dark and frost free shed or garage. It is always a good idea to take cuttings to ensure you have strong healthy plants for next year. If tender plants are to large to move insulate them with fleece or straw. Keep paths and lawns free from falling leaves as they make paths slippery and if left too long on lawns, block out light and can cause grass to die off. Continue to plant spring bulbs and spring bedding such as wallflowers, violas and forget-me-nots. October is ideal for planting new trees and shrubs as the soil is still warm. Plant at the same depth as in the pot, stake if necessary, water well and mulch. Sow sweet peas in pots for an early show next year, these should be over wintered in cool but frost free conditions. Continue to harvest vegetables. Net ponds after removing any fallen leaves and dead vegetation. Tips from Your Local PGA Pro It's never nice walking up to a bunker to find your ball in there, but it's even worse when your ball has managed to plug itself into the sand, leaving only the top few dozen dimples showing. Perfecting the plugged bunker shot can really save your round - but playing it wrong can add a few unnecessary shots to your score. • Choke down on your club by moving your hands towards the bottom of the golf grip - about the same position as a normal bunker shot (2 inches from the butt of your golf grip). • Step up to the ball as you normally would, but widen your stance a little and place the majority of your weight on your front foot (almost like your leaning into the shot slightly). • Now close your club face ever so slightly (this creates a sharper leading edge so the club will dig deeper into the sand) and press your hands forward a little to ensure you really drive the ball out of the trap. Dig your feet in a little to get comfy, and keep your lower body strong and sturdy (imagine you're a tree rooting yourself into the ground… Ok, this might sound daft, but it works!). • Just like you would with dry sand, take a steep backswing, and when you make your downswing try not to shift your weight too much - keep it on your front foot (this will allow you to drive the ball out of the sand). • As you normally would, hit the sand about 2 inches behind the ball - this will allow the sand to lift the ball out of the bunker rather than your club. Your club face shouldn't even make contact with the ball! • Swing all the way through the sand - DO NOT stop swinging once you have made contact with the sand, because you need to 'lift' the ball out of there, so follow the ball with your swing. • Watch your ball float onto the green towards the flag! The best way to perfect this is to practice, so if you get a chance on a quiet day, stomp a few golf balls into the sand and practice You'll be pleasantly surprised how easy you'll find bunker shots from now on! Don’t forget we will be doing Lesson Vouchers ready for Christmas contact Jeremy@pertongolfclub.co.uk for more details
