Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody “

I love our village! Yesterday I had a terrible experience... I lost our dog. Lois is an amazing 15 years’ old. I was walking her and Gwen, our other hound. Lois was plodding along, when I reached a bend, I turned to check she’d seen me... she wasn’t there. The next 45 minutes were awful as, with a confused Gwen, I searched lanes she might’ve taken, getting more worried. It was getting dark and, as Lois is deaf, calling was futile. I tried not to panic - what to do? My husband was in a meeting; I called one of our fab PCSOs, Ash, who, despite being off-duty offered to post on Perton Community Post; I called one of our wonderful churchwardens, and immediately she and her husband drove round looking; I called our fantastic neighbour asking her to keep an eye out in case Lois came home; a few minutes’ later I came upon that neighbour’s husband, who’d come to help. A text from Paul... Lois was safe! I called the number he texted and was soon reunited. Wonderful Charlotte had seen Lois ambling along, about to cross the main road, heading home. She stopped her and rang Paul’s number on her collar. What a fantastic community - PCSOs, friends, strangers - thank you all so much! I prayed, cried, and... had a drink! Jesus tells us to love our neighbours, using the story of the Good Samaritan to show that we’re all neighbours to everyone. I certainly experienced that neighbourly love. Let’s all love our neighbours however we can. I love our village!

Tips from Your Local PGA Pro At Perton Park Golf Club Many good players have very different looking golf swings, but they all have two things in common during their impact position: Good players retain wrist-cock through the impact zone, as well as maintain a strong solid base during the hitting area. These two areas of the golf swing set the good player apart from the high-handicapper. Strong solid base upon impact: To create power during a golf swing, golfers need to have a solid base as they strike the ball. In all sports, a solid base creates power. When a boxer throws a punch, it starts with the power in the lower body. As they start to punch, they step off their back foot and throw their weight into the direction of the punch. The legs are slightly bent, but there is tension within them, which helps keep the lower body in a powerful position. The same tension in the lower body should be maintained during the impact position in the golf swing. Currently we hear this concerning Tiger Woods upon his return from re constructive knee surgery. Before his recent surgery he could not maintain a sold base as he moved to his left side during impact. Golf analysts now describe his lower body action as much improved because of his solid leg action. Proper wrist-cock maintains lag, increases power: To create lag, the left wrist needs to be bowed upon impact allowing the hands to be slightly ahead of the ball upon impact. This causes a late hit, or "lag," which all good players use to create the power in their golf swings. High-handicapper golfers tend to do the opposite by releasing the hands early instead of having the hands ahead of the ball upon impact. They collapse the left wrist causing the club head to move past the hands before impact. This scooping action creates a tremendous loss of power resulting in loss of distance with the driver and miss-hits with the irons. To create a late hit, your hands need to arrive at impact before the club head. The best way to achieve this position is to practice hitting balls with a heavy club. The heavy "practice club" forces your hands to lead the club head through the hitting area. It also is a great way to build up your strength and swing speed, creating additional power. Try it. It works! Head down to the range, we are open until 9pm Weekday's www.pertongolfclub.co.uk

A Word From Your MP As the nights draw in, the leaves on the trees begin to fall and summer becomes a distant memory. This is the period when many of us start to think about Christmas and the New Year, yet there is still at least one occasion, in the run up to these popular holidays, that I would urge everyone to keep in mind during the festive rush. In an MP’s calendar, one of the most important days is always Remembrance Sunday, when communities across South Staffordshire come together to pay our silent respects to those who gave so much so that we might enjoy our freedoms of today. This year, I will have the privilege of laying my wreath of remembrance at Codsall. When this is done, we will be just one year away from the centenary of the start of the First World War, a war that saw immense sacrifice from every town and village across the country. As part of this - and to try and help encourage a new generation of young people to remember and understand the sacrifices of those who tragically lost their lives in battle - I am urging all parish council members and local residents to consider applying to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for community projects to learn more about the First World War. HLF is making at least £1 million a year available until 2019 as part of the First World War: then and now programme for small, community grants. It will provide grants of £3,000 to £10,000, enabling groups throughout across the UK to explore, conserve and share their First World War heritage and deepen their understanding of the impact of the conflict. Examples of potential projects include researching, identifying and recording local heritage, developing new interpretation of heritage through exhibitions, trails and smartphone apps, and researching, writing and performing creative material based on heritage sources. If not for the sacrifice of previous generations, Perton might not be the place that it is today, a place where the spirit of service is still alive and well. This month, I was fortunate to be able to visit the Perton Scouts to discuss my role and responsibilities as an MP. I was incredibly impressed by the Perton Scouts, a wonderful, dedicated group that works extremely hard for the benefit of the local community. During my time there, I could not help but feel that it was the lives of young people like these who our heroes of the past were struggling so hard to protect. And, it is therefore with an eye to the future, as well as the past, that I will be laying down my wreath on Remembrance Sunday. To contact me call 01902 846616 or 0207 219 7150

PERTON GARDENING CLUB OCTOBER IN THE GARDEN Now that October has arrived with the possibility of frost towards the end of the month thought should be given to bringing tender perennials in from the garden. Evergreen plants such as Pelargoniums will continue to grow so will need a bright frost free place such as a greenhouse or conservatory. Plants which lose their leaves or die back completely can be kept in a dark and frost free shed or garage. It is always a good idea to take cuttings to ensure you have strong healthy plants for next year. If tender plants are too large to move insulate them with fleece or straw. Keep paths and lawns free from falling leaves as they make paths slippery and if left too long on lawns, block out light and can cause grass to die off. Continue to plant spring bulbs and spring bedding such as wallflowers, violas and forget-me-nots. October is ideal for planting new trees and shrubs as the soil is still warm. Plant at the same depth as in the pot, stake if necessary, water well and mulch. Sow sweet peas in pots for an early show next year, these should be over wintered in cool but frost free conditions. Continue to harvest vegetables. Net ponds after removing any fallen leaves and dead vegetation. Wild About Perton in October Fungi are such amazing living things; neither an animal nor a plant, but a whole kingdom to themselves . One day there is nothing to be seen and the next day, particularly after rain, a whole carpet of mushrooms and toadstools can appear. Fungi play a largely unrecognised part in our lives including being key to production of beer, wine, cheese and bread. Most of the time fungi are not to be seen, existing as a web of microscopic strands beneath our feet. Its only when they pop their mushroom/toadstool fruiting bodies up into the air that we notice them. Fungi come in all colours, shapes and sizes. The Puffballs, which love our local woodlands, appear to be almost spherical and when mature gentle pressure releases a puff of spores into the air. For a twilight zone moment look no further than the collared earthstar, the nearest thing to an alien landing Perton is ever likely to see. A couple of weeks ago a spread of Giant Funnel mushrooms appeared in the woodland between St Andrew’s Drive and the Parkway, often a good place to find fungi. The Shaggy Inkcap or Lawyers Wig, an elegant elongated bell shaped white, black and brown mushroom, so called because it looks like the hair piece worn by barristers, was used in mediaeval times to produce writing ink. But not all fungi are to be found on the ground; look up into the trees for the bracket fungus standing out horizontal from the trunks of trees or the jelly fungus on rotting wood with a jelly-like feel to the touch. But my favourite are the King Alfred Cakes found on the trunks of local Ash trees. Favourite, not because they look particularly exciting; black lumps that never seem to move or grow; but because they are called after the story of King Alfred who burnt the cakes, in the 9 th century. Join us for a wildlife walk starting at Perton Library every 1st Saturday of the month at 2PM
