A Word From Gavin Williamson............... One issue that continues to blight our countryside in Perton and indeed right across our beautiful South Staffordshire land is fly-tipping. I was disgusted to hear about a recent incident on land where three lorry’s worth of rubbish was dumped on private land. The rubbish that is dumped during incidents like this takes several weeks to move and at a vast expense from landowners and the Council. It is absolutely disgusting that environmental vandals on a commercial basis are dumping waste and rubbish across our countryside. I believe that we need to start introducing tougher sentences and see judges issue punitive fines of £30,000, £40,000 or £50,000 rather than these ridiculous sums of £400. At the moment these environmental criminals believe the risk of dumping on any piece of land they chose is a risk worth taking and it is not a deterrent. I heard of one incident where one perpetrator commented that it was cheaper to pay the fine of £400 rather than hire a skip for two weeks which is infuriating. Offenders may think fly-tipping is a victimless crime but it is not. We all pay the price for it. I completely sympathise with landowners and farmers and I know how much of a real frustration it must be for them to not only spend thousands of pounds clearing up the waste but also facing countless interruptions for farmers on land that can be used for business. It is so frustrating to hear of so many incidents where people disregard Perton’s beautiful green spaces and cause so much harm to green belt land, especially farmland. I was disappointed to hear that after household recycling centres introduced charges at the end of last year, the number of cases had begun to rise. I called on the Council to meet with myself and representatives from the NFU. The meeting was very constructive and I pushed for further support for farmers who have to deal with fly-tipping on their land, urging the Council to look at providing more preventative measures and tougher sentences and also suggesting the introduction of a helpline or more cameras on public land in order to catch the perpetrators. I welcome the support from both the Council and the NFU on this very important issue. Each case of fly-tipping that takes place is so destructive but the type of vandalism that farmers have to deal with is particularly damaging. We have to ensure that our farmland and green spaces are protected from those who seek to destroy it. On upcoming events, I am very much looking forward to celebrating Easter in South Staffordshire. I always relish the opportunity of being able to spend time visiting our fantastic community groups and local businesses. It is always wonderful to be able to learn more about businesses in Perton and I am always so pleased to hear about the ways that both businesses and community organisations are benefitting our local area.

Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody.... Happy Easter! As I listen to people, my perception is that the Christian festivals at the heart of Easter are even further from people’s awareness than those underlying Christmas. But our chocolate eggs, bunnies and spring flowers all point to the celebration of new life. This new life isn’t about Spring - half of the world doesn’t celebrate Easter in the spring, but in the autumn! This celebration of new life is founded on Jesus’ new life - the resurrection - after his cruel death on a cross. 6 weeks’ ago I had the privilege of re-visiting what’s often called, “The Holy Land” - Israel and Palestine - a beautiful, fascinating, historic land, visiting the sites of Biblical events, and being challenged by the painful complexities of today. The places we hear of at Christmas and Easter: Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, the Garden of Gethsemane, Galilee… they’re real places which I’ve visited. The people we hear of at Christmas and Easter: Mary, Joseph, Pontius Pilate, King Herod, Jesus… they’re real people who lived in these real places. Bible stories aren’t made-up fairy-stories. They involve real people, places, and events, many also recorded by other contemporary writers. Jesus really did die, crucified on a cross, a common form of Roman execution; I believe Jesus also really did receive new life, as we celebrate with eggs and bunnies, and there is evidence supporting this. If you’re someone who likes to look at facts and proofs, and would like to unpack the historical reality of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, please do get in touch.
