Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody.... In the midst of this season, caught up in frantic preparations, there’s often little time to look around us. Listening to the news, the world is a confusing, dark place. Here’s just a smattering of headline words: Clinton, Brexit, Syria, Trump, migrants, ISIS - each connecting to tragic, bewildering, worrying events. For so many, for myriad reasons, Christmas is a tough time. We may know folks who are struggling, for whom Christmas is very difficult - maybe yourself. Sadly, many dread this time which most of us enjoy. As I reflect on this, it makes the commercialism of Christmas even more challenging, with its huge demands - perfect gifts, perfect decorations, perfect food and drink, perfect ambience, perfect family. For those struggling, such images pile on the sense of darkness. And yet, at its heart, Christmas is about light and hope in dark places. It’s about a baby born miles from home, to a teenage mother, scared and isolated, in a shelter, in an occupied land. The Christmas Story isn’t one of perfect families, homes, provisions – but is one offering perfect love. Christians believe this baby, Jesus, is God’s son, born into the darkness of the world, offering light, hope and love to all. I really hope you do have a special Christmas. And, amidst our celebrations, may we be mindful of our troubled world, and mindful of Jesus’ birth, bringing light, hope and love to all. We’d love to welcome you to church as we celebrate Christ this Christmas. Merry Christmas!

A Word From Gavin Williamson............... Almost every year I wonder how December crept upon us so quickly and this year is no exception. No doubt our thoughts have already turned towards Christmas and New Year celebrations, bringing families and friends together for this special time of year. I always think that it is important that we take a moment to reflect, especially during such a busy time of year, and appreciate our community. From Christmas light ceremonies and Christmas tree judging competition to Christmas carol services, Christmas carol singing, Christmas dinners, Christmas drinks and the signing of Christmas cards the life of an MP is never still at this time of year. Indeed, it is often far too easy to get lost amid the business and bustle of the season. However, returning to South Staffordshire I am immediately reminded of that Christmas community spirit, where residents go that one step further to make another’s life easier. I was honoured to recently be invited to visit volunteers from the South Staffordshire Local Village Transport scheme once again. The scheme is invaluable for residents who are without easy access to private or public transport. Getting around our rural constituency, especially during these cold and dark winter months can not only be very difficult but also very scary for those who have mobility issues, something as simple as going to the shops or getting to an important doctor’s appointment can be a huge obstacle to overcome. The voluntary driving schemes are a vital service for many local residents and can provide them with that little bit of assistance that enables them to stay in their home. I would like to thank the many volunteers who give up their free time to provide this essential service in our community, without whom this excellent scheme would not exist. The Local Village Transport scheme is just one of many volunteer organisations that I have had the privilege to visit over the last year. I can never express how grateful and proud I am that there are so many selfless groups and individuals here in Perton and right across South Staffordshire who give up their time to help others in our village. I am especially reminded about this at Christmas time when I see friends, families, neighbours and communities come together to celebrate the festive season. I hope all Perton residents have a very Merry Christmas and wish you all the best for the upcoming year.

Wild About Perton in December..... When I drove into Perton for the first time, it was the green space that surrounds our community that stood out. Approaching from Codsall, Perton emerges from the trees, hidden from view by the green wall that is Corser's Rough and Smith’s Rough. This woodland remains in private ownership, a remnant of the Wrottesley estate, once dominating the local landscape and controlled from the Hall on the hill beyond Cranmoor. If you look closely at our landscape to a time before houses, before the temporary housing for the homeless after the World War II and before the World War I airfield, traces of a managed parkland still exist. Oak trees, ditches that once went somewhere and overgrown hawthorn hedges are the most obvious features of that lost landscape. Oaks in a landscape can be planted for many reasons including marking boundaries, whereas others were planted to be cropped after they matured. Tall and straight, these crop oaks await the saw that won’t now come until health and safety dictates. Many areas, now woodland, were once open parkland grazed by animals who ate any emerging saplings. One remnant of the open parkland are the solitary ancient oaks whose lower branches were once nibbled by grazing animals several centuries ago. Once the grazers left, the trees grew between the solitary oaks filling in the gap between Corser's Rough and Smith's Rough. Our woodlands need to be managed for nature to thrive. Before the ancient forests were cleared they used to manage themselves. Trees would age naturally, die and fall over, creating glades of sunlight for new saplings to grow. Trees would be coppiced and thinned. Now, management is more limited. If these remnants of our ancient past are to survive and thrive, they need to be better managed. Next year’s Perton Spring Festival is on Saturday 20th May 2017 at Perton Library. Wild About Perton organises a wildlife walk, leaving Perton library at 2PM on the first Saturday of the month.
