Are you in Pole Position or at the back of the grid? Are you at the back of the grid? Are you stuck behind everyone else, reacting to what they all do or are you driving forward your own financial decisions? Perhaps that’s enough of the cliché’s but I guess you get the point I’m trying to make. The Banks and Building Societies may have looked after us in the past and in some cases this may have been to our benefit financially. Times are now a little more uncertain than they have been for some time and what does ‘Brexit means Brexit’ actually mean? We as consumers, customers or clients are far more financially aware than we have ever been and have a greater deal of choice to do what we want with our savings and investments. Should you do your own thing, trust the Banks and Building Societies, trust a Financial Adviser or try a combination of all three? The truth is, its your money and its your choice to do what you want. All I would ask is, please make an informed choice. The question to consider is do you have enough information, knowledge, experience and time to do it all yourself? Most of us regularly go to the dentist, the doctors and the hairdresser even if its only every six months. Would you however remove one of your own teeth, perform a minor medical procedure on yourself or cut your own hair? Perhaps the last one, but even that’s unlikely for most of us. If you then decide to get professional advice your choice in simple terms is trust the Bank or trust a Financial Adviser. Scary possibly, should it be so, I would say no. We as Financial Advisers are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. We are all qualified with a Diploma in Financial Advice and some of us are Chartered Financial Advisers. Our advice is covered by a variety of Government schemes and insurances, as well as our own professional indemnity insurance, which protects you as our client. If you’ve never spoken to a Financial Adviser before about your savings and investments then ask yourself why not? Ask for a FREE consultation at their Offices or your home and see if they can help you. Whether it be savings, investments, pensions, equity release or life assurance ask yourself this simple question - Are you in Pole Position or are you at the back of the grid? Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody.... It’s nearly THAT time of year again… perhaps it already is in your household… THAT time of year when life seems to become consumed with to-do lists as we prepare for Christmas. I wonder if you have an advent calendar? I sense that for most, advent calendars become simply a visible count-down to Christmas. For children, the days probably can’t pass quickly enough, as they get ever more excited. For adults, the days probably pass far too quickly, as each window opened means one less day to get everything ticked off the todo list. Surely there’s meant to be more to advent than this pressured countdown to Christmas? Advent is about preparing, and so it is a countdown to Christmas, but it’s not primarily about getting through the list of tasks. Primarily these weeks of advent are about getting ourselves ready for the celebration at the heart of Christmas - the birth of Jesus, and what that might mean to each of us. Instead of an advent calendar, where each day passing seems to load more pressure on our already busy lives… how about marking the days with an advent candle. Advent candles have numbered lines indicating how much to burn - most last about 20 minutes each day. I wonder how much better prepared we’d be for Christmas - for our celebrations, and the birth of Jesus - if we took 20 minutes each day, as the candle burns, to pause, and have a little time to reflect and pray…

Wild About Perton in November..... What better on a sunny spring morning to witness a bright yellow, brimstone butterfly determinedly flying up the garden searching out its favourite food, the unruly thorny shrub, blackthorn. But 2016 has been a poor year for butterflies with numbers noticeably down on previous years. Butterfly Conservation (http://butterflyconservation.org/), one of the largest insect conservation organisations in the world, which monitors butterfly numbers through their Big Butterfly Count, found a dramatic decrease this year in the numbers of many of Perton’s favourite, meadow-loving, faster flyers; the gatekeeper, comma and small tortoiseshell. The peacock butterfly, an early arrival after a winter’s hibernation, has declined by a staggering 42%. The reason for these dramatic declines remain a mystery because this summer was warmer than normal and should have provided all the right conditions for this attractive flying insect. Many butterflies overwinter in gaps in walls or in piles of wood. Others may get into open sheds, outbuildings or greenhouses where they will tuck themselves into gaps and go to sleep. If a butterfly wakes up from hibernation, it will need to eat something if it is to survive till spring. If you find a sleeping butterfly in your house, and it wakes up, give it some sugar water and then put it carefully in an unheated, sheltered place so it can continue to hibernate. Planting nectar rich plants in your garden will help because nectar is the major part of a butterfly diet. There are lots of colourful nectar-rich plants to choose from, which will not only sustain butterflies, but also please the human eye. These include the purple flowered butterfly bush, buddleia, or the pink clustered, red valerian, or those with open daisy type flowered plants such as asters, heleniums and rudbeckia, or lavender, or primulas, or sedums. Finally, if you have space, leave a patch of nettles as many butterflies like to bask on the leaves on summer mornings. Wild About Perton organises a wildlife walk, throughout the winter, leaving Perton library at 2PM on the first Saturday of the month.

Supashine A Word From Gavin Williamson............... One of the unspoken privileges of attending events as a Member of Parliament, especially in South Staffordshire, though not always that good for my waistline, is that I get to sample the best homemade baked goods. So when the opportunity arises it’s always nice to be able to give something back to our community whilst still enjoying the best that our bakers have to offer. From carrot cake to crispy cakes, residents across Perton recently took inspiration from the Great British Bake Off and sold their wonderful homemade creations in aid of an extremely important annual charity event, Macmillan’s Coffee Morning. Events were held right across the constituency and one of the coffee mornings that I had the pleasure of attending was hosted by the 1st Perton Guides which I was fortunate to visit for the third time. The Guides always provides such a wonderful array of homemade cakes on sale and I was so delighted to see local residents come out in force to support the event, who were so enthusiastic about doing something to raise money for such a good cause. It is brilliant to see how the support for the charity has grown since its inception. All money raised from the Coffee Mornings will go a long way to support patients and their families support people going through these terrible life changing circumstances. I cannot imagine the struggle that those fighting cancer have to go through and are faced with the worst of times. It always so heartening to see our younger residents in our community of Perton go that extra mile to help people that are much less fortunate than themselves. I am delighted that there are so many residents of all ages across the Perton and South Staffordshire who are able to support Macmillan and I would like to thank all those involved for hosting their own coffee mornings. In additional news, last month I was honoured to be asked to join pupils, parents and teachers of Perton Primary Academy in celebrating their recent conversion into an academy. I took part in their balloon launch which looked truly fantastic, as we let go the yellow and blue balloons of the school’s colours into the air. I have always really enjoyed visiting this wonderful school and meeting pupils and teachers and I am looking forward to hearing about their success over this school year and the years to come.
