Wild About Perton in April ‘Endless forms most beautiful’ is the way Charles Darwin described the wonders of the natural world but in Perton it’s the electric blue and orange plumage, of the kingfisher which lifts the spirits and gladdens the heart. This is Britain’s most unmistakable and most beautiful of birds and for those with patience and a sharp eye it may be occasionally glimpsed flying bullet like from branch to branch along the River Penk. Why does this bird enjoy visiting Perton? It’s because our River is generally clean with plentiful mini-beasts which support plentiful small fishes which are the main diet of the kingfisher. Whereas the kingfisher prefers slower moving water another brightly coloured bird, the grey wagtail favours faster flowing sections of the Penk. With its constantly pumping tail showing off a bright yellow underside this is another unmistakable Perton bird. Another striking resident is the bullfinch, an unobtrusive bird, probably attracted by plentiful ash trees seeds. Bullfinches are often seen in pairs with a large white rump and black head crown but it the male which stands out with its bright red belly. In the recent gales bullfinches were always the last to leave the feeder, hanging on for dear life still feeding as it rocked from side to side in the strong winds. A heavy metal bird? Beauty in birds can be heard as well as seen and in the lead up to spring birds begin to sing to attract a mate and defend a territory. The long laughing call of the green woodpecker stands out from the rest; much too exotic for Perton. On the dawn chorus walk expect to hear the early excited calls of robins, blackbirds and wrens filling the air. Later in the remote places the teck teck teck of a disturbed blackcap and the scratchy sound of a whitethroat. One bird of the nearby countryside which is top of my list for sound and colour is the yellowhammer with its ‘little bit of bread and no cheese’ song and a bright yellow headed male. Join us on May Bank Holiday Monday (5 th May) leaving the Library at 4.00AM for the dawn chorus and after walk cuppa.

A Word From Your MP Even those with little interest in politics will likely know of PMQs, where quarrelsome and heckling MPs call the Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon David Cameron MP, to task with carefully crafted questions, designed to test to the limits of his knowledge, wit and endurance. As Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Prime Minister, it is one of my responsibilities to ensure that he does not falter when confronted with a complex local issue or a deeply personal jibe, and that he is able to tackle even the most difficult question head on, with authority. Fulfilling this duty is not always easy and, as with many things in life, preparation is key. The first item on the agenda is to encourage MPs to submit into the ballot. The ballot is the means by which the order list is determined. Fifteen MPs will be randomly selected, each week, out of the 300 or so who put their names forward – either electronically or by signing a form. On the day, the Speaker will seek to balance the number of questions from each of the main parties by choosing a few extra MPs from those who have personally contacted him, requesting to speak, shortly prior to the event. It is to the benefit of our Party if we have more MPs selected in the ballot. This is because some MPs - should they have a particularly complex question - will give prior warning of what they intend to ask, in order to obtain a more useful response from the Prime Minister. This is extremely helpful, as it gives him time to prepare. We therefore urge as many MPs as possible to enter from our Party, in order to increase our chances of receiving a high number on the order paper. Each week, I will personally take around an armful of forms and urge MPs to sign them. I will then take all these forms to the Table Office before the 12.30pm deadline on a Thursday. Of course, even MPs in our own Party ask a whole range of different questions. After all, it is their job to represent their constituents and sometimes they need to ask difficult questions of the Prime Minister to show they are getting things done. Therefore, a huge amount of planning and strategy goes into determining what MPs, both in our own Party and the Opposition, are likely to ask and what the Prime Minister’s answer should be. I will attend strategy meetings with him on a Monday morning and on a Tuesday afternoon we will go through each of the names on the order paper, one by one. The evening before PMQs, the Prime Minister will read 500 pages of briefing notes to prepare for the grand event. The Prime Minister once said to me, ‘PMQs is the one half hour of the week where no one wants my job.’ Indeed, every former Prime Minister I have ever spoken to has admitted those 30 minutes sessions were amongst the most terrifying that they experienced during their term in office. The morning of PMQs is a tense one, as the Prime Minister gears up to perform, knowing that he will shortly be televised to the entire country and that the tiniest change in expression, the slightest error, will be scrutinised and described in laborious, painstaking detail in the national papers, political magazines and thousands of online blogs. As much as he might wish for it, there is no escape. The Prime Minister enters into the Chamber and takes his position under the fierce glare of the bright lights overhead. The clock strikes 12 and the world seems to hold its breath. The journalists prick up their ears, the MPs lean forward in their seats and the roar starts and climbs in volume. The great gladiatorial contest that is PMQs has begun. To contact me call 01902 846616 or 0207 219 7150

Tips from Your Local PGA Pro At Perton Park Golf Club Hi Golfers it's quick tips this month BETTER PITCHING - Golfers who are confused about the amount of body action normally associated with a pitch shot can learn from the simple mental image of pitching bean bags. During this underhanded motion, the arms and body work together in response to the target. The body parts don’t need to be consciously controlled; rather they should react naturally to the command of pitching based on what the eyes see as a target. When pitching the ball to the front edge of the green, imagine the landing area as the stake in a horseshoes game. To execute the shot, use an underhanded pitching motion like you would to throw a ringer around the stake. By simply allowing your body to respond naturally to the target, your distance control and accuracy are sure to improve. SIMPLE CHIPPING - The chipping and putting motions are linear in nature. By that, I mean the face remains square to the target line throughout, never opening or closing like it does with full swings from the fairway and the tee. Moreover, the path of the stroke shouldn’t deviate from the target line. Realizing these facts can save a lot of amateur golfers a lot of headaches around the green, where the majority of less-than-skilled players chip the ball with a full-swing technique and leave themselves with a lengthy putt. The best advice is to treat your chipping technique as a true linear motion. In other words, strive to keep the clubface square from the takeaway to the finish and to swing the club along the target line. Create a true linear motion when chipping by holding your wedge in the same manner as you would hold your putter. Take a few chipping strokes and notice how the putting-style grip facilitates a swing that travels linearly along the target line. Next, position your body over the ball and assume the same stance as you do when putting, with your eyes directly over the golf ball. To execute a true linear chipping “stroke,” simply rock your shoulders and sweep the clubhead back and then through the ball. Notice how very little, if at all, the clubface opens or closes. Make a few practice swings and soon you’ll turn your chipping motion into a simple, linear movement of the club that will make those delicate pitch shots easier to control. Good Luck, and get practicing !

Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody Easter in the autumn… that just sounds wrong! But of course, for large parts of the world, Easter is celebrated in the autumn. To be honest, I’d never really thought about this, but I was chatting to my sister, who lives in Australia, and she mentioned heading into autumn, and then in the next sentence something about Easter, and it hit me… Easter in the autumn. It does sound wrong! And actually, I think I’d find Easter in the autumn even more weird than Christmas in summer. One of the things I’ve loved about the last few weeks is that after the horrendous wet and windy winter, spring has sprung. It’s been so lovely to get out; to walk the hounds without getting soaked or having many muddy paws to deal with; to see the myriad signs of new life literally everywhere in buds and daffodils, in birds nesting and first sightings of bees. Easter should be in the spring! But not only does it ‘feel’ right for Easter to be in the spring, there’s more to it than that. Easter connects so strongly with the flourishing new life of spring. The symbols of Easter - eggs and bunnies - speak of new life. At Easter we celebrate that God gave Jesus new life - his resurrection - and also that he offers each of us the gift of new life spiritually. If you’re interested in exploring your spiritual life, please do get in touch. Happy Easter in the Spring!
