Wild About Perton in August..... Surprising a grey heron at close quarters on the bank of Perton’s little lake, when it takes off suddenly in front of you reminds us how enormous they are. The heron’s great upward leap, to escape the approaching human, enables it’s 5 ½ foot wing span to engage with the air and begin a slow languorous flight to the other side of the lake, settling again to resume its fishing, so abruptly interrupted. But fishing for a heron does not just mean catching fish, its tastes are broad, taking frogs, voles, invertebrates and even a stray duck chick that passes too close. Grey heron cannot be mistaken for any other bird with its long legs, equally long grey and white flexible neck and head, with a long spikey crest. Smaller birds often mistake a passing grey heron for a buzzard or sparrow hawk and mob it, because its silhouette in flight is similar to that of broad winged, long tailed birds of prey. But the grey heron will do them no harm. Perhaps the grey heron’s most surprising trait is that they don’t nest amongst the waterside vegetation where they seem to spend most of their time, but in tall trees, frequently in large colonies. By August this year’s heron chicks will have fledged and left the colony, dispersing to find their own favoured feeding area which they will defend against other incoming herons. So the grey heron, you spot on a regular walk, patiently studying the water’s edge of Perton’s upper lake, waiting for a fish to swim within striking distance, is likely to be the same bird day after day. Monthly wildlife walks, leave Perton Library at 2pm every first Saturday of every month. Perton Library garden is currently full of summer flower, thanks to Perton Middle School students and a perfect place to read a book in the summer sunshine.

Tips From Your Local PGA Pro at Perton Park..... The Easiest Chip Shot Putting with your 5-iron is a great play Here's an effective way to chip when you don't need to carry the ball a long distance or there's sketchy grass between you and the green. In these cases, your best chance at success will come from chipping with a putting stroke. Ray Floyd mastered this shot, and Tom Watson used his technique extensively at the British Open. Tom would take his 5-iron, slide his hands down the grip and lean the shaft forward. His weight favoured his left foot. Then he would use his putting stroke to pop the ball on the green and get it rolling to the hole. This swing takes the wrists out of the shot, making it easier to hit the ball solidly. And using your putting stroke improves feel and helps you control distance. Try this high-percentage play. As you'll see at St. Andrews, playing in the British Open means braving windy conditions. Whether you turn the ball into a crosswind or let it ride the wind, people forget that the ball will bounce and roll in the direction the wind is blowing. You have to plan for that, the 5 iron chip and run works

Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody....
This week I’ve had the privilege of attending both Perton and Sandown First Schools’ Leavers’ presentations. I’m not a proud parent exaggerating… these youngsters really are talented. It was fantastic to watch them sing, dance and share highlights of their experiences. They were a joy to watch, yet tears were also shed, even by the vicar(!), at this significant time of change. For these children changing school in September, they’re in the midst of a huge transition. And not just those finishing year 4 - also those in year 8 leaving Perton Middle, and all students will begin a new academic year, perhaps with new teachers and new class-mates. For most of us, school days are a distant memory, but our lives are still full of transitions. In the frenetic-paced 21st century, it can feel like nothing stays the same. You may have heard the quote, “change is the only constant” - which is actually attributed to Heraclitus, who died in 475BC, so perhaps it’s not a new phenomenon! Hopefully, mixed with the sadness of goodbyes, the children are looking forward to new year groups and new schools. But change can be stressful, exhausting, emotionally, mentally and physically demanding. Sometimes we crave something solid and constant to hold onto when everything’s changing. How wonderful and reassuring that God never changes. The Bible tells us God, and God’s unconditional love for each of us, are the same, yesterday, today and forever.

A Word From Gavin Williamson............... Summer has well and truly arrived in South Staffordshire. This means summer recess is around the corner and that means more time to spend in South Staffordshire. It also means I get to spend time visiting local businesses, volunteer groups and meeting more people around Perton that I wouldn’t be able to do during when the House is sitting. One of my favourite activities is visiting the vast number of community led groups that we have here in the constituency. I am always so extremely proud of the amount of volunteer organisations that we have in South Staffordshire. We are so fortunate to have such a wide variety of local charities and support groups, and it is a huge comfort to live in a community like Perton where you know that this kind of support is readily available to us. This made it even more special when I was invited once again to the SSCVA Celebration Event at Trinity Methodist Hall in Codsall. The SSCVA, of which I am a patron, is a fantastic group of volunteers who provide invaluable support to those in our society who need that extra bit of help. They are inspiring people and I am honoured to have support the group and their Volunteer Award. In fact I was so inspired by the group that last year I launched my own Volunteer Award to recognise the contributions of volunteers across South Staffordshire who have gone that extra mile. The SSCVA do such a fantastic job and I hope that many more people will take part in this extremely rewarding activity. I was greatly honoured to be asked to once again officially open the event and afterwards to present the second Gavin Williamson MP Award. The award was created to recognise the contribution of a nominated volunteer who has really gone the extra mile in carrying out charitable works within our local area. It was almost impossible to select a winner from the long list of nominees I was given, with all involved spending so many hours selflessly helping other people across South Staffordshire. I am a huge supporter of the many volunteer groups that we have in South Staffordshire and I’m immensely proud of the work that they do to support our communities and the most vulnerable in society. The celebration event showed how lucky we are to have so many truly amazing people in South Staffordshire. It is clear at the many of the events that I attend, especially at the Perton Carnival that I attended, that volunteers and community play a huge part in our lives. It is easy to think that these days we are heading towards a breakdown of community spirit, but the SSCVA and the countless volunteer groups in Perton and indeed across South Staffordshire show us that our community spirit is still alive and well.

Newly elected Rotary District Governor Richard Green, covers 55 Rotary clubs in Shropshire, Staffordshire and the Black Country, has been outlining his theme for the Rotary year just starting. His theme is ‘Young at Heart’ and he has explained why. “That’s what we are and we can see that in all the amazing, energetic projects that we organise,” said DG Richard who lives in Finchfield and is a member of the Wolverhampton Club. “Young at heart also means our younger people are at the heart of Rotary if we want our wonderful organisation to flourish into the future. “Our district is in the forefront of service to the community both locally and across the world and we want to carry on being innovative and unique with our projects, such as the cycle ride in support of prostate cancer awareness and the Staffordshire Ironman contest.” He wanted to see youth competitions and activities, such as Rotary Youth Leadership Award and Kids Out expand, as well as revitalising youth exchange to give the gifts of encouragement and support to young people in the true spirit of Rotary. He said the district had shown the way in pioneering the Vocational Study Exchange project. “Kids Day Out has grown to take place in two locations and this is a wonderful example of how our clubs support and give a day of fun that youngsters will remember for a very long time,” said DG Richard. He said the Disability Sports Fun Day had become very popular and with continued club support Rotary wanted to continue giving this gift to disadvantaged people of all ages. “The Health Awareness Days, supported by so many of our clubs, provide a superb benefit to our communities and we want these days to grow.” He added that worldwide in Rotary members had been increased by 43k in the last year, and the district wants to be part of that growth.

Carers Support Day - Organisations in South Staffordshire have been showing the district’s carers just how much support there is available to them. On Friday 19th June, Lakeside Medical Centre working in partnership with South Staffordshire Council hosted a Carers Support Day at the Civic Centre in Perton. The idea stemmed from an idea by new practice manager, Marie Wright. Marie said: “My idea was to host a coffee morning for all our carers we hold on our register and to invite a few key groups to attend to offer some support and a signposting service to them. However, after approaching Age UK South Staffs it became apparent that we could offer more to a larger group. I approached Maggie Quinn, Partnership and Locality Manager for South Staffs Council who agreed to work with us to deliver this unique event.” Carers and people who are cared for were invited from Perton, Bilbrook, Codsall, Pattingham and Patshull via the GP practices in the area and posters were also displayed in waiting areas, but it was not only aimed at carers but for the community too. We also recognised that there is a larger number of people who act within a caring role who do not see themselves as carers, our aim was to reach out to this group as well and offer our support. Numerous support groups from the local area were involved, as well as ‘Let’s Work Together’ workshops - drop in sessions that carers could attend to get information about a particular area. Carers also participated in seated aerobics and yoga session in the main hall. The event was well attended and we received fantastic feedback from those who came.. Both parties wanted to thank Lakeside Medical Centre for planning and holding the event. Also the groups who attended found this event useful and was a good way to network with other agencies. We would also like to thank our Patient Participation Group (PPG) and our practice Administrator Katie Mackintosh for providing the numerous cakes and help with serving tea and coffee. Both myself and Maggie were extremely grateful for all who attended and for all the input by those who helped bring the event together. We are hoping to roll this event out to other areas and hopefully this could be a yearly event.
