Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody.... I’ve just come home from church where it’s a hive of activity as the shoeboxes donated for Operation Christmas Child are being loaded up, ready to begin their long journeys. Those shoeboxes, full of treasures lovingly selected, made or bought, will bring delight, smiles of joy and wonder to children who would otherwise receive nothing at Christmas. We don’t know where those boxes will end up - they’re sent all over the world. The news is full of tragedy, terrorism and fear - and one of the sad repercussions is our tendency to pre-judge people, putting them into categories, tarring them with the same brush as others. The shoeboxes offer a tangible sign of hope, light and love, going to children of all faiths and ethnicities, without prejudice - simply given with love to those less fortunate than ourselves. As we think of the historical events at the heart of Christmas, I think perhaps Jesus would’ve been eligible to receive a shoebox… he was Jewish, his family was poor, they were far from home and had to beg even to camp out in a stable, and soon ended up fleeing, in fear for their lives, becoming refugees, seeking asylum in Egypt… 2000 years later, it seems little has changed. As we enjoy and celebrate this Christmas, let’s not forget the facts of Jesus’ early life, let’s seek not to pre-judge anyone, and let’s be generous to those less fortunate than ourselves, sharing hope and love. May God bless you this Christmas.

Wild About Perton in December..... The name crayfish is thought to derive from the French word for crevice; the creature which bears this name is not a fish but related to the crabs and lobsters found at the seaside. Crayfish, live in crevices, nooks and crannies in streams and lakes, coming out at night to forage on whatever they can find including dead fish, insects, plants and each other. The crayfish is not a fussy eater. Our native crayfish, the White Clawed Crayfish is critically endangered in the UK. This is because much of the fresh water in which it used to live has become polluted by domestic, agricultural and industrial chemicals. It’s also been hit by the introduction of alien signal crayfish and most devastatingly by a crayfish plague, caused by a fungus which is 100% lethal to our native species. The priority in the UK has been to protect white-clawed crayfish sites where ever they still occur, but it is recognised that additional help is needed to secure their long term survival. Ark sites are therefore being selected with a clean permanent water supply, free from contact with signal crayfish and safe from plague. In Staffordshire the fight for their survival is being led by the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust (www.staffs-wildlife.org.uk) who have identified ark sites mainly in remote streams and lakes. But the newest ark site is in Perton, the first site in a populated community, selected because our water is clean and the conditions are ideal for them to survive and prosper. Give them a thought this Christmas, by keeping an eye on our river for any pollution. Their survival is in our hands. Join us for a New Year wildlife walk on Saturday 2 nd January and hear more about our new crayfish residents at Perton Spring Festival on Saturday 23rd April at Perton Library. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our supporters.

A Word From Gavin Williamson............... Westminster seems to get lit up with Christmas lights earlier and earlier each year, which can only mean one thing, the countdown towards the festive season has already begun. Our thoughts will have already turned to our Christmas celebrations and the time we spend with our family, friends and neighbours during this special time of year. I am already looking forward to attending the wide array of festive celebrations that we have here in Perton. There is something about Christmas that here in South Staffordshire that makes even the most Scrooge-like person done a Santa Hat and join in with the countless Christmas activities we have planned every year. Although Christmas is a time of reflection, it is also my busiest time of year attending Christmas light ceremonies and Christmas tree judging competitions to Christmas carol services, Christmas carol singing, Christmas dinners, Christmas drinks and the signing of 600 Christmas cards, the life of an MP is never still at this time of year. 2015 has been one of the busiest years since being elected as your Member of Parliament, with the election in May and the many local campaigns I have taken up on behalf of residents. It has been one of many challenges, but also many highlights, such as the victory in our campaign to save three fire stations across the constituency and also meeting the Queen for the second time when I was made a Privy Counsellor back in May. This year I have also had the privilege to visit so many organisations that take care of those who need that little bit of extra support, especially during these winter months and I am so thankful for the invaluable work that they do. I would urge everyone in South Staffordshire to take some time to do the same. Every Christmas it is wonderful to so many Perton residents come together in celebration of the festive season and I hope that you all have the most wonderful Christmas and wish you all the best for 2016.
