PERTON GARDENING CLUB DECEMBER IN THE GARDEN Although winter is well and truly upon us there is still plenty to do in the garden. Prune birches and acers while they are dormant removing any diseased material and cut back to a healthy bud. Cut back any perennials that have started to look untidy. Tie in wall shrubs to protect them from wind damage and check tree stakes and ties, loosen or remove them if necessary. Gather up fallen leaves and compost or recycle them although you can leave some as shelter for wildlife. Why not plant some shrubs with colourful stems to brighten the winter; Dogwood, Willow and Rubus are ideal. Check that your greenhouse insulation is still in place and that the heater is still working. Plant new fruit trees and bushes and bare root hedging as long as the ground is not frozen or too wet, if it is, roughly plant them in a temporary spot until conditions improve. Dig over any ground not in use and add organic matter such as compost to improve the soil structure. Take root cuttings from suitable plants such as Oriental Poppy, Acanthus, Primula and Japanese Anemones. This can be done up until the beginning of March. A final reminder that your Christmas tree will stay in better shape if it is watered. A MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM ALL AT PERTON GARDENING CLUB AND A HAPPY AND SUCCESSSFUL GARDENING NEW YEAR For further information of our meetings please contact John Hobbs on 07951 475116 or visit our website at: www.pertongardeningclub.btck.co.uk "SUPPORTED BY STAFFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL"

Tips from Your Local PGA Pro At Perton Park Golf Club Winter golf Tip 1 – Warm hands; Kkeep your hands warm - Velcro or otherwise attach mitts to your trolley so you can put your hands straight in as you push. US PGA Tour player Tommy Gainey always wears a glove on each hand regardless of the weather. Winter gloves have improved in recent years. Carry some hand warmers in your pocket Tip 2 – Know your winter club distances; Check your distances now in readiness for winter - go to the range and get the feel of how far your clubs go. You will find your distances are significantly less in cold winter weather and little ground run. Tip 3 - Allow for soft greens; Unless it is frosty then you will get little if any run on green approaches so factor this into your club choice. Tip 4 - Adjust your strategy & expectation for winter; Just because it says par 4 on the card and you easily hit the green in 2 in summer does not mean you should expect the same in winter. Consider mentally adjusting it to a par 5. Play it as a 3 shotter with a strategy that leaves you a preferred lay up distance to the hole. This allows you to swing within yourself and maybe use a couple of mid irons to get in position. Tip 5 - Be smarter from the rough; Wet grass can grab the hosel of the club which often produces a snap hook. On longer shots from the wet rough consider using a rescue club as this cuts through the grass more effectively than a iron. For the shorter shots cock the wrists earlier to create a steeper angle of approach which will help to get to the back of the ball without getting caught up in the grass before contact. Tip 6 – Always clean your ball whenever possible; Use the Winter Rules/Preferred Lies – Don't get lazy here the R&A have given clubs the provision of allowing this local rule to "to protect the course or to promote fair and pleasant play". So make sure you take advantage when this lift, clean and place rule is in play. Lift and clean your ball even if you look down and it appears clean and to be lying well. Any mud on the bottom of the ball will affect the flight of your next shot so make sure the ball is totally clean. Just be careful not to wipe your ball on the green as this can be construed as "TESTING THE SURFACE". Tip 7 – Make the most of empty courses; Get out there and you will most likely have the course to yourself. Play as fast or slow as you like. Experiment with different strategies. Enjoy yourself. Tip 8 – Book a Lesson Package; We have some great packages at Perton Park Golf Club to get your game in shape for 2014. Have a great Christmas and good luck for next season.

Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody “I love Christmas! You might expect the Vicar to say
that! But I don’t just love churchy things at Christmas - I love decorations, Christmas songs on shop tannoys, time with family and friends, special food, and... presents! I do genuinely agree with those who say it’s silly to buy something just for the sake of it, but, if I’m honest, I like opening presents! To which Paul said he might just wrap me an empty box! I also sincerely agree with those who say that Christmas has become far too commercialised. It’s absolutely true and I’d encourage us all not unwittingly to get sucked into the huge commercial machine of Christmas. But, despite all this... I love Christmas! However, just a little reminder... whatever you’re doing this Christmas, and I know that for some, it’s a really tough time, but whatever Christmas means for you, can I simply say: it’s all in the name - “CHRISTMAS”. At the heart of Christmas, preserved in its name, is Christ. The only reason we have this season of festivities is because of Christ. Christmas might have spiralled far from this, but at its heart, Christmas is a birthday celebration - Jesus’ birthday. I hope and pray that all in our village have a peaceful and special Christmas. May we be mindful of those who are struggling, and, just for a moment remember the source of our celebrations - the birth of a very special baby, Jesus. Merry Christmas!

Wild About Perton in December The Holly and the Ivy, When they are both full grown, Of all the trees that are in the wood, The holly bears the crown. At face value the carol the Holly and the Ivy sounds like nonsense verse, but in medieval times some believed that the red berried, festive holly was the man’s plant whereas the black berried ivy was the women’s. I wonder how they would react if they knew that it is only the female holly which produces berries. So if you have a holly tree in your garden that produces no berries, it’s either a male tree or you’re missing a male tree nearby. Our holly tree is a mass of red berries in December, and sought out by the blackbirds. Its shiny dark green leaves stand out against the nearby bare-branched apple tree which is hibernating for the winter. George, our tom cat heads for the holly during his early evening stroll around the garden, peering up the trunk looking for the birds bedding down for the night in its warm protective embrace. The holly provides a larder of food for the dunnock and robin who are in and out of the tree during the day raiding the winter larder of insects, similarly protected against the December cold by the holly. The ivy, our native evergreen liana, roots in the soil at ground level but uses any tree as a means of vertical support, to access sunlight. Ivy can divide opinion with some thinking it does trees no harm whilst others think its presence leads to their slow death. But ivy is a fantastic wildlife resource providing cover for nesting and feeding birds and insects. In the autumn the ivy flower is the main source of nectar and pollen for honey bees to top up their winter stores. There will be so much to see and enjoy about Perton’s wildlife in 2014. Why not join us for our monthly wildlife walk which leaves Perton Library at 2PM on the first Saturday of every month, whatever the weather.

A Word From Your MP I love Christmas. It is, without doubt, by far and away my favourite holiday. I love the Christmas carols, I love the sense of excitement in the air and the joy of families re-united for the festive season. I love attending church on Christmas Day and I love being able to give presents to my family and friends. I love it all and it is a good thing too because, while Christmas is one my favourite times of the year, it is also one of my busiest. From Christmas light ceremonies and Christmas tree judging competitions to Christmas carol services, Christmas carol singing, Christmas dinners, Christmas drinks and the signing of 750 Christmas cards, the life of an MP is never still at this time of year. Indeed, it is often far too easy to get lost amid the business and bustle of the holiday. However, there always comes a point – usually on Christmas Day itself – when I manage to pause and contemplate what Christmas truly means. For each person, the spirit of Christmas has a slightly different face. For example, for some people Christmas is purely about the birth of Jesus Christ, while for others it is about spending time with family or merely bringing to a close yet another year. For me, Christmas signifies all these things and yet also much more. As an MP, I see many cases on a daily basis where people encounter major difficulties and big life blows. I often speak with local residents who need help with their problems and am all too aware that many people may feel that they have little to celebrate. Christmas, however, is an opportunity for us all to come together and help each other to share the weight of these heavy burdens. We are lucky, this year, to have a wide range of Christmas activities in the area for everyone to enjoy. Last month, there was an Xmas Craft Fair at Codsall Village Hall and Perton also hosted its first ever Christmas Fair, thanks to the hard work of 12 dedicated volunteers. For the musically minded, there will also be Carols Around the Tree, on December 6th, at the Codsall Village Centre, and Carols Around the Crib at St. Peter’s Church on the 22 nd. I hope to meet many of you on my festive rounds but, for those I don’t see, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
