Tips from Your Local PGA Pro At Perton Park Golf Club Hi Golfers here's February's quick tip. On the range I see many times that amateurs take the club back too quickly in a rush to hit the ball. But in my estimation, more golfers have a back swing that is too slow instead of too quick. When you take the club back too slowly, the tendency is to start down too quickly from the top, which causes you to slow down at impact when you should be accelerating. Don't get me wrong: I'm not advocating a fast back swing. Rather, take the club back at a nice, comfortable pace. It should be gradually accelerating as you make the transition from back swing to down swing I want you to concentrate on making the back swing with a smooth turn of your upper body away from the target--the club head is slightly outside your hands. Then cock your wrists and work the club head toward the sky. The movement is steady and unhurried. If I started "low and slow," as you often hear, I'd be tempted to jerk the club down from the top, destroying my rhythm. Give it a try and good luck. Why not come down and practise on the driving range at Perton. It's undercover so you will stay dry! Or even join one of our group lessons in the spring email me at jeremy@pertongolfclub.co.uk to register.

Perton Slimmers Are Big Losers!!! Members of Perton Slimming World, held at Perton Civic Centre, have been seeing amazing results!! In January alone, they have lost over 40 stones between them!!Two of the members, Sam Jones and Jon Stuart, are particularly happy about their amazing weight losses!!

Sam, aged 28, who has lost 3 stone told us, "I love Slimming world!!! It has changed my life and only for the better!!! Who wouldn't love a healthy eating plan where you can eat pretty much what you want, still enjoy going out for meals without the dread of being naughty and I can still have my treats but obviously within reason!!! Slimming world isn't a diet to me; it's just a way of life! By far the easiest and best decision of my life!!!!" Jon, aged 25, has lost 2 stone 8 lbs in just 15 weeks!! He told us, “I joined Slimming World because I was very overweight and had tried loads of different ways to lose weight. I have learnt to cook proper meals for the first time as before I used to pop pizza and chips in the oven. Now I can cook a Slimming World chilli from scratch!! My favourite part of Slimming World is staying to group. It’s so much fun with great recipe ideas and I always leave feeling really focused for the week ahead! If you want to lose weight easily, eating delicious, family meals, join on Thursday at 5 OR 7pm at Perton Civic Centre or ring Sheena on 07962075980.

Wild About Perton in February Every time I stand on the boardwalk looking out across the Upper Lake, there are always a couple of Canada geese nearby with angel wing. Angel wing is a condition which causes the main flight feathers to be matted and stick out sideways, giving the disease its name. Geese with angel wing are always smaller than their companions and can’t fly. But why do some of our Canada geese suffer from this debilitating condition? Researchers say it’s because of excess protein in their diet. Canada geese are naturally herbivores, which means that they mainly eat plants, grazing on short grass – school playing fields and the open space by Coleridge Drive – are real favourites because the grass is always short. Think of them as a sort of cow on two legs, but without the cows’ two stomachs, which is why they produce so many deposits of partially digested grass. Canada Geese also like insects, small fish and aquatic plants, which adds variety to their healthy, low-protein diet. Grains and seeds such as corn and wheat are another healthy favourite. In their North American homeland, Canada geese migrate twice a year, breeding as far north as the Arctic tundra and migrating south in the winter. Canada geese were brought to England by Charles II to add into his waterfowl collection in the 17 th century, but it wasn’t until after the Second World War that their UK population exploded due to wildfowlers. Ironic therefore that Canada goose is known to taste particularly foul. In the UK Canada geese don’t migrate but stay close to a good food supply. Perton’s Upper Lake is an ideal place to live with a constant supply of high protein bread and biscuits, brought to them. And that’s what has caused some of our Canada Geese to develop angel wing. If you wish to feed the ducks and geese a more natural choice of food would be any seed or grain. Why not join us for our free Spring Festival on Saturday 12 April at Perton Library or join our monthly wildlife walk which leaves Perton Library at 2PM on the first Saturday of every month.

A Word From Your MP One of my favourite activities as an MP is visiting local schools in my constituency, including Perton First School, where I recently opened a Sensory Garden, and Perton Sandown First School, for which I helped judge the Mind Your Step poster competition (warning about the penalties associated with dog fouling). On these occasions, I am always greatly impressed by the interest and the depth of knowledge that the students display. We are extremely lucky in South Staffordshire to have schools offering such a high quality of education. Much of this is down to the extreme hard work and dedication of the teaching staff, but it is impossible for them to do their job without continued financial support. I have long held that rural constituencies, like South Staffordshire, deserve a greater share of the total national funding. In South Staffordshire, the average spending per pupil is £5,129, £930 less than in the neighbouring authority of Wolverhampton. Indeed, the county of Staffordshire is ranked 140 out of 151 education authorities in England. In December of last year, I wrote to the Secretary of State for Education, The Rt. Hon Michael Gove MP, on this issue and the Secretary of State confirmed that he is committed to addressing the ‘unfairness’ that exists in the allotment of school funding. This is not the only good news to be delivered on the funding front. The Government recently announced an extra £2.35 billion to create more school places. This funding is in addition to the £5 billion that is already being spent in this parliament and means that, between 2014 and 2017, schools in Staffordshire will receive £23,580,423. It is the first time that councils have had 3-year allocations of funding to spend on school places, with the idea being that Staffordshire Council can plan ahead and ensure every child has a school place. While the Government has already created 260,000 new school places, this announcement means that thousands more are now on the way. Furthermore, in December 2013 it was announced that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds in South Staffordshire have been allocated £2,212,000 for 2014/15 to help them achieve their full potential. The Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools so that they can support their disadvantaged pupils and close the attainment gap between them and their peers. The Government has increased Pupil Premium funding to £1.875 billion in 2013-14, with schools attracting £900 per disadvantaged child, with an additional payment of £53 for primary-aged pupils. In 2014-15, the funding will rise to £2.5 billion, with £1,300 for primary-aged pupils, £935 for secondary-aged pupils and £1,900 for all looked-after children, adopted children and children with guardians. This means, in total, pupils in South Staffordshire will have received £5,621,000 between 2011 and 2015. Funding for education in South Staffordshire is improving, but there is still much that can be done. I aim to continue to work hard to ensure that our schools gain a fair deal and that our pupils continue to receive the best education. I am very much looking forward to finding out what questions I will be asked by pupils in the years to come. To contact me call 01902 846616 or 0207 219 7150

Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody Are you fed up with red hearts; heart-shaped chocolates; fluffy teddies with ‘I love you’ on their tummies; and the flood of sentimental cards?! Don’t get me wrong, romance is great and I hope all of us, at some point in our lives, get a taste of romance, but is this really what love’s about? We don’t have many weddings at The Church At Perton we’d love more! - but many couples choose a fantastic Bible reading about love which you might well know. It includes the following: “Love is patient and kind; it is not jealous or conceited or proud; love is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable; love does not keep a record of wrongs; love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth. Love never gives up; it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” Someone suggested substituting your name for the word ‘love’, and then re-reading the passage e.g. “Julia is patient, Julia is kind... etc. Try it... it’s pretty challenging isn’t it? It paints a vivid picture of love love of a parent, a friend, a partner - and it’s a long way from the romantic fluffy stuff of Valentine’s. Wouldn’t it be amazing to be loved like this? Perhaps this is something for each of us to ponder and to work at. I also believe this describes how God loves each one of us perhaps something else to ponder.

Tamar Medical Centre Pneumococcal Vaccination Campaign Make sure you are protected against pneumonia! That’s the message from Tamar Medical Centre’s Dr Dhingra and Dr Grewal. Over the next couple of months special clinics are being set up at the practice in Severn Drive, Perton for patients aged 65 and over. Broncho-pneumonia is caused by bacteria and is one of the major causes of death in older people. Dr Dhingra says “People over 65 are more vulnerable to picking up infections. We strongly recommend anyone above that age to have the vaccination. Broncho-pneumonia is a preventable disease and just one injection provides life-long cover.” Staff from the practice will be ringing patients over the next few weeks to invite them to have the jab. To find out more or to book into one of the clinics, call reception on 01902 755053.
