A Word From Gavin Williamson............... I would like to wish all of you in Perton a very happy new year. As we enter 2016, we inevitably think about the events of the year that has just passed us by. South Staffordshire has not been short of interesting things to report back on. We’ve had an election, huge successes in many campaigns and played host to many fantastic events. I have been busy campaigning both in the General Election and in many of our local campaigns, whether it be fairer funding for our schools or calling for more apprenticeship opportunities for young people across South Staffordshire. Just before Christmas I was invited to the Perton Christmas Fair and turn on their Christmas lights. Visitors were treated to variety of activities on offer ranging from fairground rides to face painting. I was so glad to see the guest of honour, Father Christmas, who stopped by his grotto in Perton Library after having to miss the event a few years ago. Despite the pouring rain, man happy volunteers served refreshments in the Church to those who were getting into the festive spirit. There is always a great community spirit at Christmas in Perton and I had a wonderful time at the Christmas Fair. I would like to pass my own congratulations to all those who had a hand in organising this fantastic event. Without the hard working and committed volunteers who fundraise throughout the year, to put money into the community Christmas lights, this event would not go ahead. Perton Christmas lights have previously been cancelled due to funds, so I am delighted that due to the effort of all those involved Perton will be lit up for the festive season. The past year has been one of many challenges, but also several triumphs. As we enter into the New Year, I feel that we have so much to celebrate and I hope that 2016 will prove to be an even better year than the last. I am looking forward to spending every minute I can, continuing to speak to and spending more time with local residents across Perton and I wish you the best of luck with your endeavours over the year ahead.

Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody.... I’m writing with about an hour until the print deadline, having totally forgotten to submit my piece! A symptom of the mad pace of life? Or an indication of my disorganisation?! But writing now, for mid January, has stopped me in my tracks and frantic activity. The days before Christmas are so full - full of lovely celebrations, but also full of all that needs doing, of pressure. And yet, just a few days’ later, it’s all over - again, and we wake up to another January, another New Year, another wondering where the last year went. In January I celebrate my 4th anniversary as Vicar of Perton, and I sense the same refrain in me - where’s the time gone? These 4 years have flown, a whirlwind of activity, which I’ve loved. However, I’m aware of the very real risk of missing the richness of right now; of being too caught up in the pressures and pace of life, always looking forward. It’s good to stop… take a deep breath… look up… appreciate right now. Jesus encouraged having ‘faith like a child’. This phrase is one I keep returning to, pondering what it means. I think one facet is living in the moment - generally children aren’t concerned about the future, they simply enjoy living in the present. As we begin this new year, which will undoubtably fly along, I encourage us all, regularly, to stop… take a deep breath… look up… appreciate right now, thank God for this moment. Happy New Year!

Wild About Perton in January..... The landscape in which we live has changed and has been much altered over many generations. Much of our natural landscape had already changed by the time of the Doomsday survey of 1086 which described Perton as 8 acres of meadow and woodland ½ league long and as wide, all valued at 40 shillings. The original course of the River Penk, rising from a spring in Tettenhall, is also much changed. The airfield first built for World War I and then expanded for World War II, demanded well drained runways. Similarly, when new housing was built in the 1970s, the Upper and Lower Lakes were created to manage water, so that a river which mostly flows gently now rushes headlong out of Perton along concrete culverts when the rain falls. But remnants of that long lost natural landscape are still retained in places or can be recreated. Some parts of the River Penk still meander gently through a woodland landscape, looked over by rare black poplar trees, and the hunting ground of flashing yellow, bobbing, grey wagtails, searching out insects amongst the stones and gravel of the river bed. In our woodland, ancient woodland indicator plants such as the wood anemone, a white flowered wonder, and the tiny ‘find me if you can’ town hall clock still survive and thrive. Over time, creative management is recreating more diverse meadows. So alongside the regularly cut amenity grassland required for sports and games, and walking the dog, we have irregularly cut meadows, alive in damp places with summer flowering sweet scented meadowsweet. Elsewhere colonies of the purplish pink flowered red bartsia and the semi-parasitic yellow rattle are thriving. Last year, two pioneering marsh orchids added to increasing diverse meadows with their columns of bright pink flowers sticking up amongst the long grass.
