Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody..........
The World Cup is over… Wimbledon is over… the academic year is almost over… the Commonwealth Games will soon begin… the summer holidays are almost here… the Church At Perton Holiday Club is fast approaching! If the prospect of entertaining your children or grandchildren for 6 weeks is rather overwhelming, perhaps we can help! As in previous years, we’re running a one week holiday club at the church for 5-11 year olds, and we’d love to take your youngsters off your hands for a couple of hours each morning. Our Holiday Club “Mega Makers will be running from Monday 18th Friday 22nd August, 9.30am - 12noon, in the church building. Each morning will be packed full of fun and activities - games, craft, DVDs, music, Bible stories and cheesy jokes! To find out more, or register, please get in touch with me. Whether the Holiday Club is of interest to you or not, we’re keen to remind the people of Perton that the church is theirs! If you live on Perton, the Church At Perton is your Church. My husband has a great phrase, “here to hear”. As your Vicar, I’m “here to hear”, to listen to individuals and groups. The church family is also “here to hear”, wanting to listen to members of community of all ages… to hear your thoughts on how the church can better serve our village. We’re “here to hear”… please talk to us!

A Word From Your MP.....
I am always extremely impressed by the amount of charitable work that takes place
in South Staffordshire. We are extremely lucky to have a wide range of organisations and charities, locally, and it is a huge comfort to live in an area where you know that this support is available. In June, the Church at Perton played host to charities, partnership organisations and community groups from all over Staffordshire. The Celebration Event, as it was called, was organised by Support Staffordshire and was designed to enable local organisations to celebrate their successes, attract volunteers and inform people about the help and funding that is available for local projects. Local groups such as Perton Jubilee Townswomen Guild, Perton Art Group, Church at Perton, Wild About Perton, Perton Guides, Perton Carnival and Corsers Court Community Fund all gathered with local residents to celebrate South Staffordshire’s community spirit. I was greatly honoured to be asked to officially open the event and afterwards to give the first ever Gavin Williamson MP Award. The award was created to recognise the contribution of a nominated volunteer who has really gone the extra mile in carrying out charitable works within the local area. It was almost impossible to select a winner and I felt extremely humbled when presented with the long lists of incredible good works undertaken by the South Staffordshire nominees. In the end, however, the choice was clear. The award went to Eric Newton, who works as a volunteer driver for Wombourne Volunteer Bureau Hand in Hand. Mr. Newton was chosen not just because of the work he has done but the work that he is continuing to do, with no expectation of recognition or reward. as a volunteer driver, Mr. Newton spends much of his spare time helping vulnerable people to their hospital appointments and then escorting them safely back to their homes. A member of Wombourne Writers, he also volunteers for the Cheshire House Care Home, where he conveys his love of literature to the residents by reading stories and other pieces of writing. It is easy to fear that the modern era is leading to a breakdown of the local community culture, but individuals such as Mr. Newton and the other nominees are living proof that a selfless society spirit is still alive and well in our South Staffordshire villages. Tips From Your Local PGA Pro at Perton Park..... Sharpen your aim to hole more putts: The competition season is gaining momentum,so now is the time to work on your scoring. One of the fastest ways to save shots is to hole out more often from medium and short range. Here's an easy drill that will identify any stroke flaws, and help you to hone a stroke that remains solid, particularly when under pressure. To help you strike the ball with a square face , try this practise drill. You’ll need to find a flat putt so that you are confident of any movement of your ball is down to your technique, and not the contours of the green. Next you will need a couple of long tees and some string tied between them. Set up so that your eyes are over the ball. When you are in the right place the ball will appear to be cut evenly in half by the string. The string will reveal how square the putter is on the way back and through. Inside the line is fine, it's movement outside the line you should avoid. Once the ball is on it's way you will get a good idea of whether you are stroking it correctly. Where the ball ends up with highlight any swing flaws, and striking it more in line with the string should help you correct them. There are plenty more tips and drills to help you hole out, and we'd love to see you out there benefiting from them. Ask about how we can make you more competitive this Summer. Wild About Perton in July..... Ponds are a much loved feature of our landscape but historically they have been neglected, and that is certainly the case with the numerous ponds to be found tucked away in the countryside around Perton. All too often we find ponds in the local countryside which have become overgrown and a dumping ground for old tyres, bikes and household rubbish. When ‘Wild About Perton’ created the wildlife pond near to the Upper Lake we were surprised how quickly a diverse range of wildlife quickly made it their home. Pond skaters were soon gliding across the surface, and water boatmen were swimming beneath them under the water. Also on a sunny day in early summer common blue and occasional large red damselflies are seen flying over the surface. Underneath the water the larval forms of both damselfly and dragonfly, are major predators in the pond, along with the large water beetle. Smooth newts were also soon detected along with common frog whom we often find living in the long grass beside the pond. This year we also encountered some super sized tadpoles which were identified as toads. Plants are an essential for a healthy and wildlife rich water body as they provide food and shelter for a range of different animals. Dead plant matter and branches are also import providing underwater shelter for caddis flies and mayflies that use them to lay their eggs. This is why we don’t always clear out wood dumped in the wildlife pond. Creating your own pond in your back garden is not difficult. Size is not important, with even the smallest of ponds soon brimming with wildlife. Shallow edges which slope gradually are however, essential and leaving a small area of exposed mud, important for small invertebrates and as well as providing nest building materials for wild bees. The wildlife pond has been created for safe pond dipping. All you need is small net and a small tray to examine what you catch. Take care of the animals you catch and put them back afterwards. Join us for a wildlife walk every first Saturday of the month leaving Perton Library at 2PM. For further details contact Keith Elder on 01902-754245 902-754245
