Today, as I write, is Ascension Day - a festival that’s little known outside church (and sometimes even inside!) It’s when we commemorate that 40 days after he was raised to new life, at Easter, Jesus ‘ascended’. The Bible says he simply disappeared from his disciples’ sight, and returned to heaven with God the Father. It can be hard to know what to make of this. In essence, Jesus physically disappeared, alongside promises to be with them always, spiritually. This event raises questions about other dimensions - the spiritual realms we’re not usually privy to - and about heaven. When we hear the tragic news of thousands dying due to earthquakes in Nepal; or when we’re personally plunged into bereavement, as my family has been this week with the unexpected death of my young cousin, amongst the many questions we may ask, perhaps we wonder about heaven: is it real, what’s it like…? I believe our lives continue after our bodies die. The Bible paints amazing pictures of heaven, I think the writers often struggling to find words to describe the incredible glimpses they were granted of the spiritual realms we don’t normally see. For me, one verse that offers incredible comfort, and hope says about heaven, “God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” If you’d like to discover more about the spiritual realm, and heaven, please get in touch. 01902 750232 8

The Chad Singers of Pattingham look for new members. The Chad Singers choir from Pattingham is a well established singing group which started some 15 years ago with the motto ‘Singing for Charity’. Over this period of time, the choir has successfully raised over £20,000, mainly for local charities. The choir is now looking to the future and needs to recruit several new members to fulfil soprano, alto, tenor and bass roles, from local areas covering Pattingham, Perton, Codsall and Albrighton. Within the choir, a new ‘Music Reading Group’ has been initiated by the choir’s Musical Director, Sue Carter, which will take place at regular intervals starting on Tuesday 26 th May. This brand new scheme will help all members, present and new to improve upon their musical reading abilities. This group is also open to all singers from other choirs. If you are interested in joining the popular choir, singing light and popular music with the occasional challenging piece, why not come along to one of their weekly rehearsals held in Pattingham Village Hall on Wednesdays at 7.30pm, or for more information, contact Gena Richards on 01902 700188 or Alan Hickman on 01902 744653.

Wild About Perton in June..... Lazing on a sunny afternoon in the garden can be just as good a place to see wildlife as a walk on the wild side. Hovering motionless over our heads or with rapid stop start darting flight could be one of the 270 different species of hoverfly found in the UK. The Marmalade Fly is one of the most common hoverflies seen in the garden with distinctive double stripes on its abdomen. Many hoverflies are very colourful with ornate bodies, often of black and yellow, designed to mimic wasps and bees. But hoverflies are true flies with only one pair of wings in contrast to bees and wasps which have two pairs of wings. Hoverfly mimicry includes the warning colours, yellow and black, a narrow waist like a wasp and even the ability to mimic the stinging action of a wasp. But not only are they completely harmless but they are really useful insects too. Hoverflies visit our garden flowers to feed on nectar and like bumblebees and solitary bees they also pollinate plants such as carrot, onion and fruit trees as they move from flower to flower. But there is much more to the hoverflies usefulness to the gardener since many hoverfly larvae also eat garden pests such as the aphid. So when you are next enjoying a lazy afternoon in the garden welcome the completely harmless but really useful insect hovering above your head.Monthly wildlife walks, leave Perton Library at 2pm every first Saturday of every month. Perton Herbalist Hannah Charman is on a mission to turn Perton into the healthiest village in the UK! Since qualifying in 1999, Hannah has helped hundreds of patients to recover from a wide range of illnesses, using herbs that you'd find in your garden, or growing wild around here. Having used complementary medicine to recover from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in her early teens, Hannah is passionate about her work and is continually impressed by how powerful herbal treatment can be. She says "When we break a bone, our body knows how to repair itself, and it's this ability that we work with in herbal medicine. People who are unwell often want to help themselves but don't know how, or worry about the side effects of their medication, and that's where I can help". Hannah has been seeing patients privately from Lakeside Medical Centre since March and so far the feedback has been excellent. She's one of just four Herbalists in the UK to work from a GP Surgery, and her consultations are available to anyone. To celebrate national Herbal Medicine Week, Hannah is running a free clinic on Wednesday 24th June. To book your appointment, please ring her on 07763 595879 or go to her website at www.thymetobehealthy.com 12

At Smartkids we tailor the learning for our children so that we can develop truly independent learners. Our children come to us for tuition in all subjects; Computer Skills, Maths, English, SATs practice, 11+ tuition Languages and GCSE are just some of the subjects they study. We even run a homework club staffed by our qualified teachers. This not only helps the children, but is also great for their parents as it takes the stress away from them. We use computers to deliver our learning programmes. What makes us different is that many of our learners are working towards nationally recognised computer qualifications, and although many of them are still very young, they pass GCSE equivalent exams. With no exam nerves whatsoever, our success rate is 100%. All our learners are supported by “helpers”; older students who have passed their computer exams with us, and who now work as mentors for the younger ones. We also specialise in helping children with learning difficulties. Although they love learning, they often come because they find school frustrating and at Smartkids they can learn in a relaxed environment with teachers who understand their needs. To quote one of our children “I really love coming here because it’s so fun that it doesn’t feel like you’re learning but you are really!” See Advert on p5 for more information

A Word From Gavin Williamson............... Last month I wrote about the early days of the campaign, the thousands of leaflets we were having to deliver as well as the mountains of pork pies that were fuelling us through the long days. Since returning to Parliament the Prime Minister has commented on how tanned I was looking after the campaign and I assured him that it was due to weeks of leafleting rather than sitting in the sun. As with everything, the end had to come and the final few days of the campaign saw my team and I getting out the last few leaflets and canvassing as many areas as possible. Polling Day began very early, with the team and I decorating South Staffordshire’s very own Conservative Battlebus in which I hoped to cover as much of the constituency as possible to get out the vote and visit as many Polling Stations in the constituency as possible before they closed at 10pm. Back in our Association Office we had a dedicated team of volunteers on the phones calling thousands of people to encourage them to go out and vote. The Count is one of the most nerve wracking experience for any politician to encounter. Seeing the votes being counted really does make you question if you have done enough to win, especially when the voter turnout had been reported to be 10% lower than the actual figure. By the early hours of the morning adrenaline levels and moral were high as we were seeing a number of fantastic results declared across the country, but it only made me want to know mine even more. After a nail biting recount of one of the boxes, the result was declared at 6.45am. I was ecstatic to discover that not only had I won, but we had one of the highest swings in the country from Labour to Conservative, one of the top increases in the Conservative vote, as well as growing our majority by almost 4,000 votes. There wasn’t much time to celebrate as I was due to head down to London an hour later to meet with the Prime Minister to listen to the final declarations come in and begin to organise the first Conservative majority government for eighteen years. I was so happy to hear that all of our District Councillors have retained their seats and we have welcomed 10 new candidates to the Conservative team. This is a fantastic result which will enable us to continue seeing the competent governance and low tax that we have come to expect from our Conservative led Council. After 6 long weeks on the campaign trail you will no doubt be pleased to see the last of my posters come down across the constituency. This success did not come easily and it is down to the support, hard work and generosity of the team of volunteers and the people of South Staffordshire that made it happen. Thank you for all your support I look forward to continuing to represent your views in Parliament.

Tips From Your Local PGA Pro at Perton Park..... Become a master of the fringe Introduce some fun into your practise, while challenging yourself to improve. Take six golf balls, put them down on the fringe and then take aim at the flag, with the objective of getting up and down in two with every one of the six balls. If you are a low handicap golfer and you want to lower your scores, then stay at this until you get all six up and down. Make it a regular test. If your in the high single figure/low double digits, then stay at it until you get four up and down. If your handicap is higher start this drill with trying to get two up and down. Once you are able to do that regularly, progress to three up and down before you leave the practise drill. If you find you struggle, it might mean your short game is not matching your golf handicap. This will be holding you back. If so come and book a lesson we'll help you improve your up and down.
