Wild About Perton in June..... It’s been said that sun plus water equals life and that’s certainly true of the wildlife pond between the Upper Lake and the Muga Court. Created originally using the mud from the bottom of the Upper Lake, this small pond now teems with life. Subsequently the pond was improved with a staging area for safe pond dipping so that the water is only inches deep at the edge. First look on the surface for predatory pond skaters, and then sniff the air, taking in the pungent smell of the water mint growing in the middle of the pond. Then the fun starts! You’ll need a fine meshed net, like the one used at the seaside, to capture the life of the pond. Run the net through the water several times trying not to stir up too much mud and then empty the contents into a water filled tray to find out what you’ve caught. Let the water settle, then use your eyes. If you’re lucky you may find a young frog or newt, well on their way to taking their first steps on land. Six legged and three tailed damselfly larvae may be paddling around, getting ready to transform their bodies into long bodied red or blue flying insects. You may also find a ferocious dragonfly larvae, taking a break from stalking small animals amongst the water plants. Quick moving water bugs, such as the water boatmen, may scoot from side to side, plus, the slower water scorpion – not really a scorpion and harmless. And then there are the water snails, slowly grazing the abundant algae. But life isn’t finished at what you can see with the naked eye. With a magnifying glass, look for the fast moving water mites, and even smaller water fleas – not a flea, but a freshwater relative of crabs, bobbing up and down; with a rounded ‘robin’ like body propelled by waving antennae on its’s head. Join us for a wildlife walk on the first Saturday of every month starting from Perton Library at 2PM and on Thursday 16 th June at 7PM for an open evening of displays, presentations, refreshments and chat about Wild About Beautiful Perton.

Where are your savings and investments and how are they doing? We can’t predict the future but there is likely to be market uncertainty both here in the UK and in the wider world over the next few months. We have just seen Local Council Elections, Police Crime Commissioner Elections and Mayoral Elections in some parts of the Country and of course the European Referendum is on the 23 rd June. In November we will see the American Presidential Election with Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump the two main likely Candidates. If there is going to be uncertainty then the question then follows ‘what should I do with my savings and investments? ‘Should I leave them in the Bank or Building Society or should I consult an Independent Financial Adviser to get Independent Financial Advice? The Banks and Building Societies are in most cases providing poor returns on your investments with many accounts providing rates of return below the rate of inflation. The only guarantee they can give you is that your money will be worth less in real terms in twelve months’ time. An Independent Financial Adviser will search the whole market to find the most suitable investment for you and your family, given all of your circumstances. Most Independent Financial Advisers have years of experience and have built up a wealth of skills and knowledge to try and help you make the most of your savings and investments. FSC Investment Services Ltd have been based opposite the Molineux Stadium, in Waterloo Road since 1997 and have become a well-established, well known and well respected local Company. We have four Independent Advisers and hundreds of Clients, based in the Midlands and throughout the Country. Why don’t you give us a call or take a look at our website www.fscinvestments.co.uk to find out more about us. If you would like an initial free, no nonsense, no obligation appointment with myself, Frank Cochran, Derek Baillie or Mark Mitchell then please give us a call or drop us an email. We will always try to place your money in the most suitable place, at different times to suit your personal requirements. A Word From Gavin Williamson............... The past month has been a big one in terms of celebrating anniversaries in our community of South Staffordshire. I helped Wild About Perton celebrate their 10th anniversary, the Central Orchid Society celebrated 60 years in Perton, I joined Codsall Flowers celebrate 20 years of business and most recently I celebrated 1000 years of Staffordshire. I was delighted to be invited to help celebrate Codsall Flowers’ 20th anniversary on their current premises. After meeting with the extremely talented staff, I was shown how many of their popular bespoke arrangements are created in this wonderful family-run business, whilst being acutely aware that my gardening skills were certainly not up to scratch. Staff at the shop also held a raffle with the proceeds donated to South Staffordshire First Responders who were also in attendance at the celebration. The group of volunteers, who with training from and under the control of the West Midlands Ambulance Service providing invaluable emergency life support until the arrival of the Ambulance Service. I was thrilled to hear that the proceeds from their raffle would be going towards the South Staffordshire First Responders. I know for a fact how hard they work and what a wonderful group of people they are, sharing an office building with them on Wolverhampton Road. The First Responders is an incredible organisation, whose dedicated supporters have saved countless lives. I cannot praise enough these selfless volunteers, who give so much of their time and effort towards helping others. I always really enjoy visiting our local businesses to find out more what they do and chatting to employees about issues that are concerning them. It is always wonderful to be able to visit and learn more about businesses in our local area and I am always so pleased to hear of their expansion plans, providing jobs, wealth, growth and apprenticeship opportunities to our area. I have no doubt that the Perton area will continue to reap the benefits of local businesses in the years ahead and I am very much looking forward to the many events that will take place as the village and the surrounding area continues to blossom and flourish.

Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody.... Life goes on. Recently my wonderful Gran died. She was 92 and last year she and Granddad celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary! It was a sad day as we gathered for her funeral, but, as I’ve experienced serving many families, it wasn’t all sad - we smiled at treasured memories, laughed, and caught up. Life goes on… made tangible by the presence of Daisy, aged just 6 weeks, and captured in a lovely photo of 4 generations: Granddad, two sons, three of four granddaughters, and a new great-granddaughter. Life goes on. We travel life’s journey with others, some for our entire lives, some just for a section of the road. Last week I celebrated with close friends who, after 12 long years of ups and downs, have been successfully matched to adopt two little girls! On 10th-12th June the nation will celebrate our Queen’s 90th birthday. The 26th June heralds another celebration as 11 are ordained at Lichfield Cathedral, including Chris Tough. Many will know Chris, and Jim. Amongst many other things, Chris heads up Messy Church. It’s been a huge privilege to travel with her as she’s discerned this next step; seeing her flourish through her training; and now I’m so excited for her as she’s ordained, becoming Reverend Chris! Don’t be surprised to see another dog collar around the village! Life goes on. For me, most importantly, each day is travelled with God, assured of his unending love, forgiveness and hope - believing that life goes on even beyond death, with him for ever.
