Wild About Perton in May..... Two years ago I wrote about the uncertain times facing all ash trees in the UK, with the threat of a new fungal disease called ash dieback beginning to spread across the country from the East. Ash dieback causes leaf loss, crown dieback and bark lesions in affected trees. Once a tree is infected the disease is usually fatal, either directly, or indirectly by weakening the tree to the point where it succumbs more readily to attacks by other pests or pathogens. Always the last to come into leaf in the spring, with its pale bark, and seeds like bunches of keys hanging in clusters, the ash tree contrasts with the sturdily useful Oak. Ash is often regarded as inferior, but in ancient times it was the tree of life, the greatest and best of trees, with powers of healing and many thought it lucky to carry a twig in their pocket on Ash Wednesday. In Perton many of our finest trees are Ash, thankfully protected, as houses were built around them. It’s also the tree that is the only home for a black bun like fungus called King Alfred’s Cakes, named after the folk tale about King Alfred who, having trouble with the Danes, was harboured by a woman whose baking he was supposed to watch but instead he burnt. Two years on and the future for ash trees is bleak; the overwhelming majority will probably be wiped out in the next twenty years, except for a very few resistant individuals. However those that survive are then threatened by an emerald boring beetle already killing ash trees in Europe. The loss of ash locally would have a great impact because it is so dominant in our local woodland canopy. Its loss would also tragically loose our connection with that eleven hundred year old folk tale of King Alfred. Wild About Perton leads a wildlife walk every first Saturday each month starting from Perton Library at 2.00 PM.

Tips From Your Local PGA Pro at Perton Park..... Introduce some fun into your practise, while challenging yourself to improve. Take six golf balls, put them down on the fringe and then take aim at the flag, with the objective of getting up and down in two with every one of the six balls. If you are a low handicap golfer and you want to lower your scores, then stay at this until you get all Six up and down. Make it a regular test. If you’re in the high single figure/low double digits, then stay at it until you get four up and down. If your handicap is higher start this drill with trying to get two up and down. Once you are able to do that regularly, progress to three up and down before you leave the practise drill.
If you find you struggle, it might mean your short game is not matching your golf handicap. This will be holding you back. If so come and book a lesson we'll help you improve your up and down.

A Word From Gavin Williamson............... Only last month, I was writing about hedgehogs and barn owls and other wildlife that frequent our gardens so I was thrilled to see in my diary that I will be attending the 10th Wild About Perton and Perton Spring Festival to be held at Perton Library this month. Last year there was an incredible 1,600 visitors, a new record, who came to take part in a whole range of brilliant activities with various wildlife and environmental organisations. It is events such as this which make all the difference to local communities, providing a venue and opportunity for neighbours to meet and socialise. It is brilliant to see the amount of community groups that are dedicated to preserving and protecting our wildlife. At the Springwatch Festival last year I was able to get up close and personal with bats with Staffordshire Bat Group, find out more about endangered bumblebees with the Bumblebee Conservation and discover the different types of butterflies found in Perton’s Green Spaces with the Butterfly Conservation Group as well as hear about the mini-beasts found in Perton’s lakes and ponds with Wild About Perton. This year I am really looking forward to promoting the protection of the hedgehog population with the West Midlands Hedgehog Rescue, who I hear will be introducing new hedgehog ambassador, Freddy. I always find that this event is a wonderful place for getting young minds fascinated with wildlife. In a world dominated by technology it is easy to forget that right outside our front doors we have an environment which can teach us so much and Wild About Perton reminds us of just that. I have been doing a lot of work with wildlife recently; creating ‘bee beaches’ on Highgate Common, building hedgehog houses in Codsall and helping to clear land ready for the new location for the World Owl Centre in Himley. It is always fun to get to know some of the feathered and furry constituents a little better at these events and makes me even more determined to protect them and their habitats for future generations.

David Cameron’s public admission of his families tax planning arrangements have brought the whole issue of what’s legal, what’s illegal, and what’s morally correct fully into the headlights as the hot topic of discussion for this article. Let’s be honest here, nobody wants to pay more tax than they are legally obliged to pay, so the whole moral issue of what’s right and wrong is really down to personal choice. Some people think that having worked hard all their lives that taxing our pensions, our savings and finally our family homes and goods on death is a very harsh system. Others believe that the more tax everyone pays the less the burden is on the state to look after everyone who is less fortunate than those who have wealth. My Job as an independent financial adviser and wealth manager, is to show people what steps can be taken to reduce or even eliminate the tax burden on their wealth, help them to manage the investments that they have (in a tax efficient and safe way), to set up the trusts and other arrangements that help to protect you and your family, and finally to help you to manage this throughout your life. The Inheritance Tax issue is especially touchy as so many people really don’t understand how much they can own before the tax becomes an issue, how much they can give away, how much tax should be paid on lifetime gifts, Wills and will planning, and lastly but most importantly how to retain control of your money and still be able to have effective tax planning in place to mitigate your liability. Most advisers will tell you the basics about the fact that you have a £325,000 nil rate allowance, the fact that gifts made to family or friends should not exceed £3,000 to any one person and any number of gifts of £125.00 to anyone you like, the fact that you can make gifts over the £3,000 but the donor (the person making the gift) must live seven years before the gift becomes free of all IHT. How many will mention Business Property relief arrangements using AIM shares to mitigate the tax within two years not seven. How many will be qualified to discuss Gift and Loan trusts, Bare Trusts and Family Trusts, and be able to advise you on which is the best for you? AT FSC Investment Services Limited we have developed a strategic planning approach to IHT which we can prove will suit all people and all sizes of estate. If you are concerned that you and your family have Inheritance Tax problems then please give us a call and we will be happy to arrange an initial no cost non obligation meeting to show you how we work, explain the costs and benefits of each arrangement and then you will be properly informed and able to make the right decision for you and your family. Please note that the following areas are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority - Trusts, not all tax planning and will writing.
