A Word From Gavin Williamson............... I always look forward to the summer, which I must admit is due to the fact that summer in South Staffordshire means it is carnival season. I greatly enjoy these events as they provide a great opportunity for me to talk with residents around the community about any issues they might have. I have already attended Perton Carnival this year which was a brilliant day. I particularly enjoyed taking part in the procession and seeing how many people in the community turned out to support this fantastic event. Upon returning to Westminster after the election, I heard about the proposals from the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, threatening to close three local fire stations located in Codsall and Bilbrook, Kinver and Brewood. I immediately began my first campaign of the new Parliament; to save all three of them from closure. These proposals could see emergency cover removed from 18 fire stations and see the number of appliances reduced from 42 at 33 stations to 15 at 15 stations across the region. What is incredible that of these three fire stations, the one in Codsall and Bilbrook and Kinver are still in the process of being built. I have already called on Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service to reject the proposals as their closure could lead to substantial and highly dangerous gaps in provision for the Fire Service but also I am shocked at the waste of money that would be involved if the fire service pursues this route. I have started a petition for all three fire stations to make the views of residents here in Perton and across South Staffordshire heard. It is absolutely vital that constituents can rely on a fire service 24/7, especially in the more rural areas. I entirely oppose what is being put forward and I will continue to push for these proposals to be dropped to make certain that our community is protected and Perton remains safe.

Local charity chooses Wombourne for investment in Centre for Dementia Care Local charity, Age UK South Staffordshire has chosen Wombourne as the location for its new day opportunities care centre for people with dementia and other complex needs. The Centre will be opening its doors for the first time later this Summer after the redevelopment and refurbishment of the existing property in line with the new use. The property benefits from a rural location, and a large garden with mature trees, as well as being conveniently situated close to Wombourne, and Lower Penn. The new day centre in Wombourne will complement Age UK’s three other centres at Penkridge, Cannock and Tamworth and will offer tailor made day opportunities to people living in Wombourne and the surrounding villages. It will offer door to door transport in specialist vehicles with trained drivers and escorts, together with home cooked meals and snacks, a huge range of activities tailored to each person, professional staff and access to all the charity’s services. The charity is already active in the area, providing care and support in the homes of older people in the area, our telephone information and advice service, and a number of community services. Anyone interested in finding out more about the new Centre can telephone 01785 788 481 or www.ageuk.org.uk/southstaffs. We offer a free session to anyone interested in trying the service which can be booked in readiness for the opening. “We are committed to providing flexible, adaptable, personcentred services, and we can make a positive difference to the lives of many more older people by investing in this new Centre for Wombourne and the surrounding area. ROTARY TO BACK IRONMAN 70.3 STAFFORDSHIRE NEXT YEAR Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire has proved so successful that even more Rotary clubs in Staffordshire and surroundings areas are expected to offer support with marshalls at next year’s event. This major event came to Staffordshire for the first time at the weekend with 2,700 competitors taking part in a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and 31.1 mile run. The swim took place in Chasewater and the cycle ride around Cannock and East Staffordshire before the run on the Shugborough Estate. Rotary provided 185 volunteer marshalls from 19 clubs who will all benefit from sponsorship money which they can distribute to their chosen charities. John Sayer, who will be District Governor in 2016-17, has contacted clubs thanking them for their efforts in making Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire a ‘great success for Rotary.’ “I based myself at Shugborough on Sunday in the ‘meet and greet’ tent near to the finish and the organisers couldn’t thank us enough for our efforts. One of the cycle ride section supervisors said a big thank you for what they described as providing helpful, adaptable and enthusiastic volunteers. The comment was ‘please come back next year because you made my job so much easier.’ “One of the athletes said the enthusiastic encouragement from the Rotary volunteers was a great help. In fact, towards the end when he claimed he was flagging, Rotarians helped to keep him going.” Rotary clubs took Ironman 70.3 on board as an opportunity to ‘serve the community.’ Some were on road junctions during the cycle ride encouraging the riders and keeping them safe from other traffic. Many other Rotarians set up and manned the various feed stations around the course.

SUDOKU – JUST FOR FUN

Wild About Perton in July..... With its iridescent colours and a tell-tale peacock eyes, the peacock butterfly is not only our most colourful summer butterfly but also a herald of spring. In February and March it wakes from hibernation from hollow trees, sheds and woodpiles where it has spent the winter. But, the peacocks which appear in the summer are not those we saw earlier in the year but their sons and daughters. After the peacock comes out of hibernation, it finds a mate and then the female lays eggs in clusters of 500 on the underside of stinging nettle leaves, the food plant of the caterpillars which hatch. Peacock caterpillars are velvety black in colour and covered in minute white dots and black spines. In June, once the caterpillars are fully grown, they pupate, hanging as a chrysalis from a silken pad whilst they undergo transformation into the beautiful flying insect we all recognise when it emerges in July. The peacock is not our only summer Perton beauty, it is often joined by close relatives the red admiral, small tortoiseshell and the occasional painted lady. But these splendid butterflies would not be with us without the stinging nettle, which grows with such abundance along parts of the River Penk and in woodland glades and edges, where it is a tempting source of food for many insects. And where there are insects in abundance you will also find song birds, looking for a regular meal. So the song birds, including Britain’s national bird, the robin we enjoy in Bluebell Walk, would not be with us without the insects and the stinging nettles. Monthly wildlife walks, leave Perton Library at 2pm every first Saturday of every month. Perton Library garden is currently full of summer flower and a perfect place to read a book in the summer sunshine.

Thank You Perton! It’s great to tell you that, thanks to your generous donations, we’ve raised over £1150 for Christian Aid. Christian Aid is a well-respected charity, as their website states “Poverty is an outrage against humanity. It robs people of dignity, freedom and hope, of power over their own lives. Christian Aid has a vision - an end to poverty” Through our community’s offering, we’ve played our small, but important, part in helping eradicate poverty. How great is that?! I don’t know about you, but it’s so easy to become fatigued by charities asking for money - whether it’s appeals in the media, endless ‘begging’ letters, or people on the doorstep asking us to support their particular cause. It’s so easy to become jaded or even angry at those clamouring for our money. However, despite the frustration and fatigue, we’re a generous bunch - Britain’s ranked one of the most generous nations. And it’s not just money, we’re also generous in giving our time, in volunteering to help others in myriad ways. In my wonderful role as your Vicar I get to meet many people and hear fantastic stories of how they help others, tirelessly and thanklessly. I think this giving, locally and further afield, is a crucial part of building community. And, the Bible is wonderfully clear, stating, “God loves a cheerful giver”. So let’s not be put off by pushy charities they’re simply trying to raise money - but choose carefully what we want to support and then, give cheerfully! 01902 750232 www.churchatperton.net www.pertonpages.com ♦ pertonpages@gmail.com ♦ 07734 461934
