A Word From Your MP Part of an MP’s duties involve questioning public officials and calling on them to account for their actions. It is a major part of our job to fight for the interests of our constituents and demand answers on their behalf. It was therefore a bit of a role reversal when, last Friday, I found myself in the panel at Question Time. Now – in the spirit of honesty - I feel that I should clarify that I was not filmed and then broadcast at 10.35pm on BBC1. No, I was live. Even worse, I was live in front of an audience that I didn’t know and could say with complete certainty wouldn’t vote for me – well at least for another couple of years. I was taking part in Question Time at Codsall High School. The event, which was being put on to celebrate Local Democracy Week, was expertly organised by the Pattingham Youth Forum and supported by the Staffordshire Council of Voluntary Youth Services (SCVYS). My courageous fellow panellists included South Staffordshire Police PCSO Ashley Tooth, Codsall High School headteacher Marjorie Tunnicliffe and former RE teacher and Parish Councillor Penny Allen. We were also fortunate to be able to welcome on the day a delegation of nine youth workers from Japan, who were being hosted in the area by the SCVYS. There are few things more terrifying for a politician than being asked probing questions by a large crowd of impressionable young students. I would like to say they took it easy on me, but they didn’t. They grilled us mercilessly. I have long felt that the questions people ask show more about who they are and what they know than the answers that they give. I must admit, I have been questioned less rigorously by a bevy of professional journalists, so the staff of Codsall High School are obviously doing an excellent job training the minds of our local youth. Over the course of 45 minutes, we covered issues ranging from equal marriage and grade boundaries to the voting age, tuition fees and challenging traditional stereotypes. As a young Conservative MP, who went to a comprehensive and grew up in Yorkshire, I am extremely aware of how important it is not to bow to the expectations that have been set for you, but instead forge your own path. When I was young, I visited Parliament and realised that I wanted to become an MP. I hope this Local Democracy Week may have similarly inspired a few of the students of Codsall High School to become engaged in the democratic process and potentially become involved in politics themselves in the future. Pregnant? Congratulations!! We are holding our first "Meet a Bump" session where pregnant ladies can attend the group to meet other mums and mums to be. Pregnancy can be lonely, especially if none of your friends are pregnant or have children; or if you’re on maternity leave and have been used to working. Having a support network of friends with babies and young children can make a real difference to your pregnancy and the early days of motherhood and we hope that you'll connect with other ladies through the session. The bumps you meet may become your baby’s first friends. So on Tuesday, 19th November come along to Pattingham Village Hall at 10am to meet other Mums & Mums to Be, and experience a taster session for our Baby & Toddler group.

Wild About Perton in November Stepping out for wildlife in November can be rewarding despite the shorter days. Gone is the leaf cover letting light into our woodlands, to appreciate our magnificent English Oak and Ash trees. Many of our tall woodland Oaks bear all the straight lined signs of being planted as a crop to be harvested years ahead whereas others have grown more randomly along our public footpaths. Look out for a few old oaks, gnarled with age that show by their sheer size and breadth of spread that their early years were spent in open fields, and are now sadly difficult to appreciate hemmed in by young upstarts. Finches often fill the air in November with short bursts of twittering, as they move from tree to tree. Without binoculars it’s often difficult to distinguish one from another, but the flocks seem invariably to comprise Goldfinches or Siskins, with the trees between the Upper Lake and Perton First School often a good place to observe them. In our gardens, Greenfinches command the bird feeders, ably supported by Chaffinches and if it’s your lucky day, an unobtrusive plump male Bullfinch with its bright red chest, white rump and black head and tail will pay your feeder a call. Other social birds include mixed flocks of Blue, Great & Coal Tits, inquisitively inspecting fence panels for insects and the Long-tailed Tit, with its small round body, long tail and rippling call often heard long before they are seen. Both Lakes should be closely observed as unexpected visitors drop in to join the residents. In previous years Perton has welcomed the diving Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe and the long bodied Goosander with their red hook tipped bills all hunting for fish. Another unobtrusive visitor has been the Water Rail with its contrasting brown, black and white coat, enjoying our thick reeds and busily feeding unnoticed alongside the more obvious Canada Geese and Mallards. There is so much to see and enjoy why not join us for our monthly wildlife walk which leaves Perton Library at 2PM on the first Saturday of every month.

Grand Theatre Performance November 17th & 24th 2013 will see some fabulous dancing and wonderful costumes from the Suttie School of Dance in their annual display at the Grand Theatre Wolverhampton. All ages will take part from the youngsters of 3 to the adult tappers in a variety of routines in ballet, tap, acrobatics, disco, and musical comedy. The Suttie School of Dance was formed in 1976, as part of the MASD association, by Carol who still teaches today together with her nieces Kay & Amy and other teachers and helpers. Classes are on a Saturday for the younger pupils at Holy Cross Church hall in Bilbrook and each year pupils take examinations (the school has 100% success rate) and take part in the show at the Grand Theatre. Carol makes all of the stunning costumes for the dancers and that is some task with the number of pupils involved. Tickets are available from the Suttie School of Dance or on the nights of the performances at the Grand Theatre itself. Blue Branches Drama Academy is based on the Coven Road, Brewood. Alex Sutton who runs the school prides herself on the individual experience each student needs. Taking children from 4 upwards, she runs classes almost every day of the week after school and on weekends. Classes teach an entire spectrum of theatre craft, from acting ability and LAMDA exams to stage costume and set. ‘Drama and acting is a fantastic confidence builder’, Miss Sutton says, ‘having to not only perform in front of many, but also prepare for that moment can boost a child’s esteem in many areas of their life’. The techniques at BBDA clearly work, as this past summer 100% of LAMDA examinations taken were past, 15% with a pass rating, 50% with merit and 35% with the highest grading of distinction. However Miss Sutton clearly states, ‘we are not based upon our grades and children only take them when they are ready. BBDA is about each individual and what they want to get out of the experience and being able to present that to others’. Students perform three times a year, most recently at ‘Somerford Hall’ in Brewood. Holiday days are also available, from Halloween scares to full summer schools.
Class prices start from £4 and more information can be found at www.bluebranchesdramaacademy.co.uk. or call on 07794084773 or 01902 851682. 18

Watching the golf last week on the PGA Tour proved that slumps are meant to be broken. Webb Simpson Snapped a 16month win less drought by dominatng the field at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and a six-shot victory. Simpson won the U.S. Open in 2012 but did not find his way to the winner’s circle again until last Sunday. It’s difficult to call it a slump since there are many guys have been on the PGA Tour for years and never tasted victory. But there’s a valuable lesson to be learned when you see a player reach the top of his profession and struggle shortly after. The story of players winning major tournaments and disappearing for a while is a common one. Simpson, however, showed us that with a little perseverance, slumps are temporary. Slumps are a bizarre occurrence in golf. They seemingly can come from nowhere and when we least expect them. And while slumps might not be 100 percent avoidable, there are some things you can do to make sure that when a slump arises you can get your game back on track in a hurry. • The first step to break a slump is to go back to fundamentals. The slightest change in grip or posture can set in motion a set of compensations during the swing that can ruin your game indefinitely. Whenever a player comes to me in desperation, the first thing I always check are fundamentals. Do the same or find a coach that can help you and the rest will be much easier. • Manage your emotions and stay positive. I know that sounds wishy-washy, but golf is not just a mental game, it’s an emotional game and there is nothing that will send your emotions into a tailspin faster than performing on the course below your known abilities. Remember that golf is played one shot at a time and that the next swing you make could be the beginning of your next hot streak! Checking you are on the right path with your game is only a call away, good luck!!

PERTON GARDENING CLUB NOVEMBER IN THE GARDEN Now you can plant your tulip bulbs as there is a reduced risk of tulip fire, plant them 10-20cm apart and three or more times their own depth. Order seeds and plants from catalogues early to ensure you get the varieties you want. Buying bare root plants is often the cheapest way to obtain many woody plants, they are available in many garden centres and from mail order companies. If postal deliveries arrive before you are ready to plant put them in a bucket of water for a few hours then heel them in the ground in a temporary position until you are ready to plant them in their permanent place. Cut back dahlias once they have been blackened by frost. Lift, dry and store in a frost free place. Protect plant pots that are not frost resistant with bubble wrap. Insulate the greenhouse with bubble wrap and pick over all the plants once a week removing any dead leaves and flowers. Lift and divide rhubarb plants using the same method as that for ornamental perennials. Replant with buds just above the soil surface. Tidy away the remains of summer crops to the compost heap and harvest vegetables as needed. Sow broad beans and hardy varieties of peas to ensure an early crop next year. Float a ball on your pond to prevent the water icing over in freezing conditions. PLEASE REMEMBER always check bonfire sites for wildlife before you light any fires. Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody The Vicar’s Got Faith! Well, you’d hope!! But, despite reporting having lost a dog last month - thanks for the sympathy! - we’ve been entrusted with yet another furry friend, “Faith”! Perton Pages didn’t give me this slot to write about pets, but acquiring a new member of the family called Faith... well, I couldn’t resist! It’s a strange expression, to say someone’s “got faith”. It sounds like they’ve got some terrible affliction! What is faith? What does it mean to “get” faith? The dictionary defines faith as “complete trust or confidence in someone or something” - and we all place faith in people and systems. It also says faith is “the strong belief in the doctrine of a religion, based on spiritual conviction rather than proof”. We’re all spiritual, it’s part of who we are - body, mind and spirit. We all have beliefs about God and faith is very personal. I don’t think we “get” faith... rather, our lives are a journey of discovering what we believe, of exploring our spiritual side. It’s important to remember that the opposite of faith isn’t doubt. Lots of us have doubts and yet have faith, because it’s a journey. The opposite of faith is unbelief. If you’re interested in exploring your spiritual side, what you believe about God, and would like to chat about your life journey, I’d love to listen. We might’ve welcomed Faith into our home, but in spiritual terms, like everyone else, I’m on a journey of faith. “
