What's On at Perton Library September is Local and Community History Month across Staffordshire Libraries ‘The Odyssey of Tommy Atkins’ - Andrew Lound is back at Perton Library by popular demand to deliver another of his trademark interactive illustrated presentations. The Odyssey of Tommy Atkins is a truly remarkable presentation. The story of the Great War as told through the eyes of a generic British soldier—‘Tommy Atkins’. The story is told in a series of letters from Tommy Atkins written to his wife Alice. The whole story is supported by period images, music, sound effects and numerous props. Wild About Perton in September..... Monthly walks in Perton’s wild places have built up a good picture of the changing seasons and what animals and plants are to be found at different times of the year. This spring and summer has been particularly good for wild flowers and especially those that flourish in woodlands, in damp places and beside water. Some weeks before the bluebell pushed its dainty, deep blue flowers skywards, the golden yellow lesser celandine, sometimes known as the spring messenger, shone bright along the banks of the Penk and the nearby damp ditches behind the Pear & Partridge. This early flower which has spread rapidly locally in recent years, was much celebrated by the poet Wordsworth. Another early flower is the wood anemone, a white flowered wonder, and an ancient woodland indicator which flourishes in Smith's Rough. In May, the yellowish-green flowered town hall clock, another ancient woodland indicator plant, put on a show towards the pumping station. This striking tiny plant is so called because its flowers are at right angles to each other just like the clock faces of a town hall. Orchids are the most glamorous and mysterious of plants and Perton plays host to two examples. In June, the marsh orchids arrive with their columns of bright pink flowers sticking up amongst the long grass. Most of our marsh orchids are confined to the damp fields beyond Brownies but this year two pioneers flowered close to the upper lake. By late July a shyer, less obvious orchid took its place. The broad-leafed helleborine is recognisable as an orchid by a bloom of flowers, but the small mauve, white or green flowers hide their beauty well. Once confined to shady tracks in the surrounding countryside this orchid has popped up all over Perton this year. In September look out for fungi. Why not join us for a wildlife walk on Saturday 3 October leaving Perton Library at 2PM.

A Word From Gavin Williamson...............
Public transport is incredibly important to any rural community. For South Staffordshire, which is made up entirely of villages, it is absolutely vital. Thousands of Perton residents depend on buses to make journeys, each week, and for many this is their only means of transport. Indeed, those not fortunate enough to be close to a local bus route can find getting from place to place a tremendous struggle. Sometimes there comes a point when public transport becomes a struggle or residents live too far away from a regular bus route. Last month, I met the incredibly generous people who spend their free time volunteering with Local Village Transport, which runs schemes across a number of locations to help less mobile people get to hospitals, medical appointments and essential shopping trips. The service covers a number of areas across South Staffordshire including Perton, Pattingham, Bilbrook, Codsall, Brewood and Coven. These schemes are a wonderful idea and they would not exist without the continued hard work put in by local volunteers. Living in a rural area has a great number of benefits, but it does not come without its challenges. Without the hours given by the selfless volunteers this excellent scheme would not exist. The voluntary driving schemes are a vital service for many local residents and can provide them with that little bit of assistance that enables them to stay in their home For people in Perton with mobility issues or without easy access to private or public transport, life in the countryside can prove extremely difficult. Something as simple as a weekly shop can be a huge obstacle to overcome. I constantly find myself saying how grateful to be able to live in an area where this assistance is available and when I visit schemes such as this and talk to the volunteers it just reinforces it further. I would urge everyone to give these schemes their full support as one day we may rely on this service ourselves.

Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody....
Most of us enjoy a good sing! Whether it’s on the football terraces, after a few drinks, watching the Last Night of the Proms, in the privacy of the shower, or even, good old hymns! There’s something great about singing! I wonder how many of you, secretly or otherwise, enjoy “Songs of Praise” on TV… listening to snippets of people’s life stories, their choice of favourite hymn, and singing along with choirs and musicians? Well… on Sunday 18th October at 4pm The Church At Perton is hosting a Community Songs of Praise Celebration! (minus the TV cameras!) If you’ve a favourite hymn and would like us to put it into the mix as we plan, then please, please, please get in touch: revjulia.perton@gmail.com/ 01902 750232. We’d love to have lots of different folks from our village involved choosing their favourite hymns. Or, if you just like a good sing, please put the date in your diary and come along, it’d be great to raise the roof, singing together as our local community. If you can sing in tune, or read music and sing harmonies - fantastic, but even if you’re tone deaf, we’d still love you to join us. The Bible talks about making a joyful noise to the Lord - it doesn't say it has to be a tuneful noise! Also… back by popular demand, this year’s Pet Service is taking place on Sunday 19th September, 3pm. Please see the posters for details

Codsall Dramatic Society Presents
Henceforward… By Alan Ayckbourn
Weds 23rd – Sat 26th Sept Codsall Village Hall Abandoned by his wife and child, left to live alone for 4 years, composer Jerome is no longer able to write music. An obsessional user of every form of technology, he lives in a dangerously lawless suburb surrounded by cameras and recording systems. But, he needs to have his daughter back (in order to work again). Meanwhile, he has used his talents to programme a robot, a NAN300F, which he uses to win over his wife and the social worker. Our production of Henceforward is set some time quite soon, but relies on current technology to bring Jerome’s sad existence into focus. Poignant, funny, with even a touch of slapstick, we hope our Autumn production leaves you moved and thoughtful. Codsall Village Hall, Wolverhampton Road, Codsall, WV8 1PL Wed 23rd Sept at 7:30 pm, £6.50 Thu 24th & Fri 25th Sept at 7:30pm, £7.50 Sat 26th Sept at 2:30pm, £7.50 Tickets available from Codsall Crafts and Models (formerly Knit N Stitch), Codsall and Ian Rigby Jewellers, Birches Bridge, call our Box Office 01902 267322.
