PERTON GARDENING CLUB SEPTEMBER IN THE GARDEN As many of the summer bedding plants and hardy perenials will start dying off this month you will need to remove any dead growth to keep borders tidy and to avoid the risk of disease. Dispose of any diseased materials but compost or recycle the rest. Some seed heads can be left to provide food and shelter for birds and wildlife, they will also look attractive when covered by frost later on. Collect any seed to be saved from hardy annuals, compost plants. Stock up on spring bulbs this month to get the best specimens and the widest choice, always choose firm bulbs that don't have any sign of mould. Plant as soon as possible, except for tulips, these should not be planted until November to prevent them from becoming diseased. Stake and cut back tall shrubs to minimize wind damage. Lift and divide congested perennials, discard woody centres and replant healthy outer portions. Empty the greenhouse and give it a good clean ready for overwintering tender plants and check that the heating system is working. Harvest maincrop potatoes, dry and store, any damaged ones should be used immediately. Lift and dry onions and shallots once leaves start to die back. Keep on picking runner beans and sweetcorn. Our next meeting will take place on the 27th September at Perton Library Severn Drive commencing at 7.00pm. Our topic for the evening is "The great flood of Farley Dingle" presented by Peter Wight. For further information of our meetings please contact John Hobbs on 07951 1475116 or visit our website at: www.pertongardeningclub.btck.co.uk "SUPPORTED BY STAFFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL"

Tips from Your Local PGA Pro This month I am just going to let you know what’s happening at the golf club. After a busy few months at Perton with a high increase in people using the Club and Driving Range (with a large amount being Perton Pages readers) it is now time to expand. Also I’m pleased to say the Perton Pages over 50’s class has been a huge success!! We have taken on two new Professionals who have joined us from 3 Hammers Golf Complex. PGA Professionals Piers Ward & Andrew Proudman are now part of the Coaching Staff which means Perton is now the best place by far in the area to play, practise and learn. Pop in and say hello when you are next passing….. September is going to be a great month for golf, the weather is usually good and its Ryder Cup year so let’s hope Europe do the business! So here’s Septembers tip. Many of you will have said that courses are “growing the rough this year.” I think it’s a case of excellent growing weather and the green staff not being able to keep up with the cutting. Rough has been really thick and tough this year and it doesn’t matter how good you play you are going to hit it in there now and again. The secret is not to be too greedy. Sometimes an 8 or 9 iron is the only club that will get the ball out. Even if there is still 200 yards to go, your rescue/hybrid just won’t get it out. So look at the lie of the ball first and get the ball back in play, a bogey isn’t the end of the world, take it and move on to the next hole. Try it and see what happens. For free tips email Jeremy@pertongolfclub.co.uk.

The Children's Designerwear Outlet Codsall Winter Stock Now In Time moves on so quickly! It seems only a short time since we looked forward through the coldness of Winter to the first buds of Spring and now suddenly we are heading towards the end of our English Summer. Our quickly changing seasons are especially evident at the Children’s Designerwear Outlet in Codsall. Being mindful of the seasonal weather the team at the Outlet are constantly re-stocking clothes accordingly, “Thankfully we manage to keep one step ahead of the weather! We know our customers appreciate the fact that they can buy ahead so we are now stocking ready for Autumn/Winter” explained owner Julia. As ever, all brands are sold at 50% off the original retail price and in addition to the existing favourites, this coming season sees lots of new brands introduced into the Outlet. Also, due to popular demand the Outlet has expanded the babywear section and now stocks the biggest ever range of baby clothes and gifts. If you want to check what is in stock without leaving your home then take a look at the website www.tinylabels.co.uk and if you see something you like the look of then phone the friendly team at the Outlet on 01902 844775 and ask for it to be reserved! Find the Children’s Designerwear Outlet upstairs in Village Coffee Codsall; just walk in the main coffee shop entrance and go through to the back and up the stairs. Opening hours Monday-Saturday 9am-3pm.

A Word From Your MP It has been quite hard with the unreliable weather to really appreciate that the summer is here but luckily we have had the Olympics and the Jubilee Celebrations to keep our spirits up and take our mind off the relentless rain. It really was truly brilliant to see Team GB rising up the leader board all the way to third place. I think the Olympics will stay fondly in everyone’s memories and ensure that the Summer of 2012 is one that we always remember. I have to say that one of the things that has struck me most since becoming a Member of Parliament is that I often feel that I am able to make a greater contribution when I spend time in the constituency. I really appreciate the opportunity to get out and about in South Staffordshire to see what is going on first hand. When the House returns I am able to raise all the concerns that I have picked upon during my time spent with everyone. This summer in particular I have noticed just how many volunteering opportunities are available locally and I have been trying to highlight as many of these as possible. Most recently I helped out at the Halfpenny Green Owl and Falconry Centre for the afternoon. This is a not for profit organisation who rely on the support of regular volunteers and would love more people to get involved in helping to care for the birds. Cleaning perches and birdbaths and seeing the newly hatched chicks was a real learning experience but it is a really great feeling when you are supporting an organisation as well as having a good time. I have especially enjoyed becoming involved in events going on in Perton recently. Recently I met with the Perton Women’s Institute and also the Perton Jubilee Townswomen’s Guild. I thoroughly enjoyed both these events although I have to say that both meetings came with a healthy supply of vigorous questions on issues concerning government policies to questions about things that are happening locally. It was also great to be able to attend one of Wild about Perton’s regular meetings at the Library. I receive a lot of invitations to attend meetings that take place on weekdays and it is so frustrating to have to send apologies when I have to be in Westminster. All of these meetings are so much a part of the fabric of life in South Staffordshire and it was very interesting to hear of all the activities and events that Wild about Perton, the Women’s Institute and the Townswomen’s Guild have planned for the next year. I have already managed to put some firmly into the diary. If you are looking for another interest this summer I cannot advocate getting involved in local organisations strongly enough. To contact me about this or any other matter call 01902 701479 or 0207 219 7150
