A Word From Your MP

In last month’s article I wished you all a Happy New Year and wrote about where we have come both as a city and as a country since the election in 2010 and the continuing growth and rise in employment that we have to look forward to. Although January is always a time of both looking back and looking ahead, what I did not mention are the resolutions that many of us make each year in order to better ourselves and those around us. For instance there are many people, in Wolverhampton like anywhere else, whose New Year’s resolutions would have included giving up cigarettes, drinking less alcohol or eating a healthier diet. While these are all worthwhile causes, I decided that my New Year’s resolution would be to spend more time volunteering and helping others. It is my hope that by visiting as many different charities and groups in Wolverhampton South West as I can, I will not only be able to make my own small contribution to helping those in need but will also be able to gain firsthand experience in meeting those who make a positive difference in Wolverhampton as well as those who depend on the services that they provide. As a Member of Parliament, I wish to listen to both groups and support them where I can. Last month, to kick off my first "Year of Volunteering" I went to the food bank at Darlington Street Methodist Church in Wolverhampton City Centre. The food bank is run by the charity “Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd”, with whom I spent the afternoon making and handing out food parcels to individuals and families. Having only spent an afternoon volunteering at the food bank, I appreciate immensely the work that Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd do. I have said before that, food banks provide an incredibly valuable service to the community beyond the support provided by Government. I now look forward to volunteering this month at Compton Hospice. There are many ways of helping others and the community directly, but to anyone who has the time and motivation available I would highly recommend volunteering. In our own city, the Wolverhampton Voluntary Sector Council by its own definition exists to support the development and sustainability of an effective voluntary and community sector. It aims to make it as easy as possible for any Wolverhampton resident aged 18 or over to volunteer.
