A Word From Gavin Williamson...............

Summer has well and truly arrived in South Staffordshire. This means summer recess is around the corner and more time to spend in South Staffordshire. It also means I get to spend time visiting local businesses, volunteer groups and meeting more people around Wombourne that I wouldn’t be able to do during when the House is sitting. One of my favourite activities is visiting the vast number of community led groups that we have here in the constituency. I am always so extremely proud of the amount of volunteer organisations that we have in South Staffordshire. We are so fortunate to have such a wide variety of local charities and support groups, and it is a huge comfort to live in a community like Wombourne where you know that this kind of support is readily available. This made it even more special when I was invited once again to the SSCVA Celebration Event at Trinity Methodist Hall in Codsall. The SSCVA, of which I am a patron, is a fantastic group of volunteers who provide invaluable support to those in our society who need that extra bit of help. They are inspiring people and I am honoured to have support the group and their Volunteer Award. In fact I was so inspired by the group that last year I launched my own Volunteer Award to recognise the contributions of volunteers across South Staffordshire who have gone that extra mile. The SSCVA do such a fantastic job and I hope that many more people will take part in this extremely rewarding activity. I was greatly honoured to be asked to once again officially open the event and afterwards to present the second Gavin Williamson MP Award. The award was created to recognise the contribution of a nominated volunteer who has really gone the extra mile in carrying out charitable works within our local area. It was almost impossible to select a winner from the long list of nominees I was given, but this year the award went to Karl Owen of Halfpenny Green Air Scouts for his devotion to the group over the past 5 years. Karl has built the membership of the Beavers and Cub divisions from 20 to 96 members and the number continues to rise. Under Karl’s leadership the Scout Hut was refurbished, with new carpets, toilets, kitchen and computer suite installed, along with a shooting and archery range transforming the Air Scout Group’s environment. I am a huge supporter of the many volunteer groups that we have in South Staffordshire and I’m immensely proud of the work that they do to support our communities and the most vulnerable in society. The celebration event showed how lucky we are to have so many truly amazing people in South Staffordshire. It is easy to think that these days we are heading towards a breakdown of community spirit, but the SSCVA and the countless volunteer groups in Perton and indeed across South Staffordshire show us that our community spirit is still alive and well.
