A Word From Gavin Williamson............... Visiting local schools across my constituency is always a real pleasure, whether it be for a ‘Question Time’ style grilling by pupils or a presentation of awards, highlighting the academic success of students over the past school year or telling pupils about the role of a Member of Parliament. I was delighted to visit pupils at St Bernadette’s Primary School recently to talk to pupils about how Parliament works and also about my role as the Government Chief Whip. One of the best things about visiting schools is the questions that pupils ask. I regularly take part in many ‘Question and Answer’ sessions at schools and, although there were times that I have been put on the spot, I can honestly say that I have rarely heard the same question twice. Topics range from local issues like roadworks and houses to what the Queen is like, what it is like inside Buckingham Palace and what the Prime Minister’s favourite food is. There has never been a visit to the school where I have not been impressed with pupils’ curiosity and my time spent with students from St Bernadette’s was no exception. Teaching pupils more about how Parliament works is a brilliant way to get them interested in a whole range of issues like democracy and the way our country is run. At a time where it is rare that a day goes by when a topic that has been debated in the House of Commons is not on the front page of the newspaper, I was only too happy to take part in a lesson to help pupils learn what happens in a debate in Parliament. I was very impressed with how quickly they picked up debating skills and I am sure that when it comes to demonstrating debates in class they will do extremely well. I look forward to hearing about the topics that they will discuss in, I’m sure what will be, a very lively session. We are extremely lucky here in Wombourne, and indeed right across South Staffordshire, to have schools offering such a high quality of education. Much of this is down to the hard work and dedication of the wonderful staff inspiring such inquisitiveness in their students, encouraging them to learn, and I believe it is important that politicians take time to answer the questions they want to ask. It was an absolute pleasure to spend time listening to their thoughts and I am sure that in around thirty years I will recognise a few faces debating across the despatch box. I also had the opportunity to once again join the volunteers at the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust at Highgate Common during a rare break in the cold weather. I always learn so much about the wildlife that lives here on the Common when I visit. The important work that goes on here helps you realise how dependent all this good work is on the generosity and the support of volunteers. The Trust does such important work here in South Staffordshire and I hope others are able to follow my footsteps, and lend a helping hand ensuring that Highgate Common remains a thriving and nurturing environment for our treasured wildlife.
