AL STUDIES
Peru State’s experienced faculty in business, criminal justice and psychology share both theoretical and practical aspects of learning with students through real life experiences and applications. We strive to provide unique learning experiences that reinforce classroom coursework that translate into resumé building opportunities. Our active learning environment highlights include online business strategy simulations, social problem solving, crime scene evaluation, grant writing and psychological research using computer simulations. Small classes provide an opportunity to interact with faculty and engage in discussion topics impacting our world. Membership in honor societies like Phi Beta Lambda in business and Kappa Omicron Rho in criminal justice, as well as attending regional psychology conferences, allow students opportunities to form bonds with peers via travel and academic competition.
“I believe the School of Professional Studies has one of the best departments here at Peru State College. All of the professors are very well spoken and have a great deal of experience in their field of study. This experience is brought to the classroom and helps students have a better understanding and feel for their career interests and choices. I am very grateful to be able to work with these professors as they help me map out my future. As an undergraduate student trying to plan for life after college, the School of Professional Studies has definitely steered me in the right direction.” -Jalen Tate Class of 2021

2019 TEACHING EXCELLENCE WINNER : MATT HILL “Dr. Matt Hill holds students to a higher standard of excellence and assists them in reaching the goals he sets for the class. I loved being able to leave choir knowing that I had accomplished something that day and that I could be myself in the process of learning. There are very few people who have a comparable passion for music and humans. When the two come together – like they do in his classes – it creates magic that I will never forget.” Nicole Osborn Class of 2019
Whether you’re preparing for graduate and professional study, seeking a teaching endorsement or pursuing a career in healthcare, Peru State offers coursework to satisfy a wide variety of career goals. The School of Arts and Sciences has developed a far-reaching curriculum in art, English, liberal arts, mathematics, music, natural sciences and social sciences. Students often have the opportunity to work alongside faculty to do hands-on, graduate-level research and present their findings at state and national conferences. Opportunities to engage the community abound. Faculty and students host Show Choir Festivals, art shows, History Day, Math Contest, Mole Day, theatre productions, concerts and more throughout the year!

“Outside of the classroom, Professor Nies is always available to offer guidance and advice to students. Professor Nies has dedicated herself to ensuring that [students] come away with a better understanding of what it means to live in a diverse world and how we can contribute to that world. She truly believes that her students are capable of more than what they think and she makes it a point to assure them of it.” Ama Bikoko, class of 2017

ACADEMICS Students don’t just learn from textbooks at Peru State, they also learn through engagement and hands-on activities. Many of our students have been nationally recognized for their undergraduate research, character, athletics achievement and in academic competition. As Nebraska’s first college, Peru State College is proud of the 150+ years it has served students in and out of the classroom. Founded in 1867, Peru State has transformed from one building with 60 students into a state-of-the-art institution offering a multifaceted education to more than 2500 students. Peru State College has been regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since the organization’s inception in 1915. The College also is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and is a member institution of the Nebraska State College System. Student surveys conducted in the spring of 2018 found that Peru State College provided more satisfactory service in all areas than the national average and its midwestern peers. Twelve areas were surveyed and found more satisfactory including Academic Advising, Instructional Effectiveness, Student Centeredness and Responsiveness to Diverse Populations.
STUDENT SUCCESS SERVICES (SSS) The federally-funded TRIO SSS program increases a student’s likelihood of graduating from college by providing enhanced support for eligible students. First generation college students, students from limited income backgrounds, and students with physical or learning disabilities are encouraged to apply for SSS membership. Services include peer mentors and tutors, cultural outings, access to technology, and a supportive network of peers and professional staff dedicated to helping students succeed. Incoming freshman SSS members also have access to the Summer Bridge program, giving them a head start transitioning to college, as well as the opportunity to participate in the Journey Living Learning Community (LLC) in Morgan Hall.

“The RHOP was a way for me to take my passion for health sciences to the next level. I was initially attracted to Peru State through this program, but soon learned that my experiences at PSC would be more than I could have imagined. Having completed my time at Peru State and moving to the next level, it is very clear that the faculty in the natural sciences department has thoroughly prepared its students. I would encourage anyone interested in a health profession to visit with PSC’s RHOP coordinators and apply.” Nicholas Hohensee Class of 2019

“When I chose to attend Peru State I knew right away that I wanted to be involved on campus. Since my freshman year, I have been involved in the Psychology Club and the Black Student Union. Being a part of these clubs has helped me branch out in so many different ways. Now as a junior I am the President of the Black Student Union, on the executive board for the Psychology club, and now a part of the Criminal Justice club. I have Peru State to thank for allowing me to get so involved on campus. Besides being a part of clubs on campus, one of my other favorite things about attending Peru State is having such amazing professors who you are able to connect with not only on an educational level but also on a personal level. The professors here really do care for their students. Peru State College has so much to offer. Come take a tour and see just what I am talking about! Kortnie Sheppard Class of 2021

“I loved being a student-athlete at Peru State College! As a student-athlete, I was able to continue playing the sport I loved, while also accomplishing my goal of becoming a teacher. Peru State also allowed me to serve in leadership positions across campus while competing as an athlete. My involvement at Peru State taught me the sense of balance needed to excel in every arena. Looking back, this sense of balance was what allowed me to achieve an Academic All-American status. Most importantly, being a student-athlete at Peru State has given me friends for life and has made me the individual I am today.” – Emily Whipple, Class of 2019
