LEADING CHANGE EUROPEAN PROGRESSIVES FOR GREEN GROWTH AND CLIMATE ACTION Copenhagen, 11 October 2016 Introduction The world is and will be facing the challenge of climate change. These changes have the potential to profoundly change the ways we live, work, and consume. How do we move towards a green economy? How can we as progressives harness the potential of this transition to foster growth, environmental sustainability, but also social progress? How can Europe lead this transition? These are some of the questions that we will discuss in the conference ”Leading change – European progressives for green growth and climate action”, in Copenhagen on 11 October 2016. The conference takes place a year after the member states of the United Nations successfully concluded the first universal climate change accord. The Paris Agreement stipulates the world community’s commitment to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius, or possibly even 1.5 degrees Celsius, and principles how to achieve this. On COP22 in Marrakesh the countries will further specify how to reach this objective, where additional efforts are still needed. This means decisive action must be taken now to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in the EU and worldwide. As European Socialists and Democrats we are convinced that stricter climate regulation can also offer great opportunities to industries and businesses by ensuring they stay ahead in innovation and productivity, while opening up new markets, sectors and business models, creating green jobs and make our economies more environmentally and socially sustainable. This conference seeks to answer the following questions: - Is climate action a chance or a threat to economic development? - What jobs and growth opportunities offers the greening of the economy? - What is the role of the EU and Member States? - How to organise a just transition? - How does the Paris Agreement urge for enhanced climate action? - What are the impacts of the Paris Agreement on European industries and businesses? - How will the transition be financed? - What to expect from COP22?
