Mike started hillwalking on the Yorkshire moors in the early seventies and drifted into rock climbing later that decade. He started working in the outdoors in the early eighties as a freelancer. Mike then went to college to study geography and subsequently trained as a secondary school teacher. After teaching for 12 years Mike was fortunate enough to land a full-time post at Plas y Brenin, the National Outdoor Centre in
