Colorado Springs Dog Parks

Bear Creek Dog Park 21st St and Rio Grande This exemplary park has everything a dog and his master could want! It is 25 acres and includes a creek, ball and doggie waste bag dispensers, and a small dog area. Cheyenne Meadows Dog Park Canoe Creek and Charmwood This park is fenced and on-leash. Devon’s Dog Park: (Monument) E Noe Rd, off the E Greenland Rd exit Larkspur, CO Greenland Open space- The first open space area. Garden of the Gods Off-Leash Dog Area 3130 N. 30th St. This off-leash area is open between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. from May through October, and until 9 p.m. the rest of the year. Palmer Dog Park and Palmer Park (Yucca Flats) Off Leash Dog Area 3650 Maizeland Rd. This park has the standard dog waste pickup bags and a water fountain for humans as well as an accompanying one for dogs in the shape of a bowl. Rampart Dog Park 8270 Lexington Dr. and Union There are several water spigots to entertain the dogs, and several beaches. This park is also open between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. from May through October, and until 9 p.m. the remainder of the year. Red Rock Canyon Off-Leash Dog Area This area is unfenced and off -leash.

Tips on Hiking with Dogs Follow the rules of the trail! Do not take your dog on a trail where dogs are forbidden or take him off-leash when the rules call for on-leash dogs only. l

Carry enough clean water for you and your dog. Drinking out of mountain streams can give your dog (and you) some nasty parasites. Purchase a soft, collapsible dog bowl that is light weight and convenient for hikes. Make sure your dog is fit enough for the length of hike, and the type of trail you are planning to tackle, and always take a good trail map. Always clean up after your dog. Bring plenty of potty bags in case of more than one clean up event. Make sure you bring basic first aid materials for humans and canines alike. Also bring a cell phone in case of an injury that leaves you or your dog immobile. It is always best to hike in groups.

l

Move to the right of the trail when passing another hiker, and restrain your dog. Not everyone wants to meet and greet your four-legged buddy!

l

Teach your dog to pay attention to you when passing other hikers or animals. Bring a toy or treats to gain your dog’s attention while passing another dog or person.

l

Acupuncture

and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine As we have become more open to other cultures over the past thirty to forty years, there has been a growing interest in alternatives to traditional western medicine. Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, acupressure, and food therapy. TCVM has been practiced on animals and humans for thousands of years in China, building protocols based on knowledge that was passed down over generations. Traditional Chinese Medicine focuses on the state of the life force or vital energy, Qi. Qi has two opposite forms: Yin and Yang which are in balance in a healthy pet. When the balance is lost, Qi flow is interrupted and disease may occur. TCVM seeks to restore the balance, enabling the normal flow of Qi to return, enabling the body to heal itself. Acupuncture is defined as the stimulation of a specific point on the body with a specific method, resulting in a therapeutic homeostatic effect. There are 173 acupoints in animals. Most of these acupoints are located in areas where they will stimulate nerves, the immune system, blood vessels, and/or lymph vessels. Studies show that stimulation of acupoints induce release of beta-endorphin, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters which can relieve pain, regulate stomach and intestinal movement, decrease inflammation, help the immune system, help regulate hormones, etc. There are several methods to stimulate acupoints, including dry needles, moxibustion (heating of the point), aqua-acupuncture, electro-stimulation, and therapeutic laser stimulation. A single or multiple methods may be used on the same pet, but the goal is the same: to restore the flow of Qi and allow the balance to return. Many people worry that acupuncture will hurt, but most (over 95%) of our animal patients are quite comfortable with acupuncture therapy and some will actually fall asleep during the treatment with the needles in. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine should only be practiced on an animal by a licensed veterinarian. One list of qualified acupuncturists can be found at www.tcvm.com. Prior to using acupuncture and TCVM, a thorough examination should be performed on the patient and additional testing, such as x-rays and/or bloodwork may be recommended to get more information on your pet’s condition. Acupuncture can provide relief for some short-term conditions with 1 to 3 treatments, but for chronic problems a series of 3 to 10 treatments along with routine follow-up treatments may be needed. For herbal medications, follow-up exams and testing are recommended to help ensure that therapeutic goals are being achieved. continued next page 16

Why is my Dog

Biting, Chewing, Licking and Scratching? One of the most common reasons that a pet is taken to the veterinarian is skin disease. So what causes itching? There are a variety of diseases that can cause a pet to be itchy, but the big 3 include allergy to environmental pollens/dusts, allergy to an ingredient in the diet, and infection by a parasite such as Sarcoptes. Well that breakdown seems pretty simple right? Unfortunately, all of these diseases can lead to secondary skin and ear infections, which adds insult to injury in these poor pets. The tricky part is that the infection, and the primary cause of itch need to be addressed concurrently to see improvement and resolution of the symptoms. We would like to focus on one of these causes of itch in particular because it is PREVENTABLE. We don’t have many fleas and ticks here in Colorado Springs, but Sarcoptic mange is extremely prevalent. Sarcoptes are microscopic parasites that are carried by fox, and coyote populations. Have you noticed the news stories on the common sightings of coyotes or fox in our area? Well your dog is at risk! “But my dog doesn’t have direct contact with these animals”. The mite can infest your dog without direct contact. Sarcoptes mites are extremely contagious and when a mite falls off the skin of a carrier animal it can survive in the environment long enough to infest a new host animal. Diagnosing the disease can be difficult and skin scrapings are often unrewarding. We recommend discussing the best parasite prevention program with your veterinarian based on your pets lifestyle and travel. Most Popular Dog Breeds The American Kennel Club recently announced their annual list of the most popular dog breeds in America. The AKC’s 2012 most popular dog breeds list is very similar to the 2011 and 2010 most popular breeds list, but with a few changes.

The Beagle and Golden Retriever have both gained ground on the Yorkshire Terrier, knocking the terrier to the 5th spot and the Poodle and Dachshund switched spots. But with all of the shake ups, once again, the Labrador Retriever tops the list for the 21st consecutive year!

A Good Fit for Doggie Daycare If you feel your dog is a good candidate for doggie daycare, there are several things to consider when looking for the right facility for your dog: l l l l l l l l l l l

Look for professionals with solid backgrounds in dog behavior, care and training. Be sure they require an interview and an assessment of your dog before acceptance into their program.

View the facility when dogs are playing there and interview the manager and staff.

Dogs that are there should appear happy and playful in a calm and well-supervised environment by a caring staff. Ask about staff to dog ratio; the fewer the staff to dog ratio, the more likely your dog will be safe and well-cared for Be sure the daycare facility includes rest time so as not to overstimulate your pet. Ask about their requirements from vaccinations to insurance.

Ask if they select appropriate play groups depending on the dog’s temperament, size and age. There should be multiple playrooms and secure, outdoor areas.

Find out how they deal with inappropriate behavior between dogs. Be sure they are affiliated with a veterinarian’s office in case of an emergency and ask if they will accept your preference for veterinarian care.

All of us have seen pets with problem mouths, but most people don’t know that by the age of 3 years a full 85% of pets will have periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the most common clinical condition in adult dogs and cats and is completely preventable. Signs of Dental Disease in Dogs and Cats Bad breath Teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar Loose teeth A sensitive or painful mouth Drooling or dropping food from the mouth Bleeding from the mouth Loss of appetite or loss of weight (this combination can result from diseases of many organs, and early veterinary exam is important). Often these signs will develop gradually and are difficult to notice. I see animals on a regular basis whose owners describe as “acting grumpy” or “getting old,” but when we fix their dental disease they start acting “like puppies again!” Dental disease has been linked to many long term problems. Often they are directly related to the amount of tartar and the length of time it is present, but some significant problems can occur early in the course of dental disease. A professional dental cleaning should include the following: Pre-anesthetic exam - This examination allows your vet to minimize the risk associated with anesthesia. Today’s advanced anesthetic protocols allow us to safely anesthetize and recover many patients, even older ones. Anesthesia monitoring - Monitoring your pet’s vital signs (temperature, heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and others) helps ensure safety and allows your veterinarian to adjust the anesthesia as needed. Dental radiographs - Radiographs (X-rays) of the teeth allow your veterinarian to evaluate below the gum line for any abnormalities that cannot be detected by examination alone. Scaling and polishing - This removes the tartar and smooths the surface of the teeth to slow down the recurrence of bacterial accumulation and tartar. Scaling under the gumline is one of the most important steps in a good dental. Fluoride treatment - Fluoride helps strengthen the enamel and decrease future plaque formation Most dogs and cats will need regular dentals (just like people) as tartar recurs. By addressing dental care at home you can decrease the progression of the disease and often the frequency of subsequent dental cleanings. Home care should include: Brushing teeth - Just like people, this is the best way to slow the progression of tartar

Oral rinses - Effective at decreasing the bacterial count in the mouth

Proven dental diets - Be careful, many “dental” diets are not proven to decrease tartar

Dental chews - Additives in these chews decrease bacteria and reduce plaque on the teeth Water additives - Decrease bacteria in the mouth

How to Evaluate Your Dog’s Weight To determine whether your dog is the correct weight, compare her body condition with the images here of how dogs typically look when they are overweight, underweight, and just right.

1. Look at your dog from the side. Her tummy needs to tuck up from her chest and not be level with or hang below her chest. If you can easily see a dog’s ribs, she’s probably underweight. But in some breeds, including Greyhounds, Whippets, and Italian Greyhounds, the dog’s ribs show at a normal weight. 2. Look at your dog from above. As you stand over her and look down, your dog needs to have a visibly tucked-in waist, but her hipbones shouldn’t protrude too severely. If your dog looks like a barrel, a sausage, or a small beach ball with legs, she’s probably overweight. If her hips protrude sharply, she’s probably underweight. If she has a nice curve inward at the waist, she’s probably at a good weight. 3. Feel your dog’s sides for the ribs. This test is especially important for heavily coated dogs, whose fur often conceals weight issues. If you can feel no evidence that your dog possesses a rib cage, she’s probably overweight. If you can feel the ribs but they have a slight padding, like a light blanket over them, then your dog may be just right. If the ribs are obvious and feel like they’re covered with only the thinnest layer of skin, your dog may be underweight. Obesity can cause many serious health problems in pets of any age. Too much weight stresses bones and joints, strains the heart and other internal organs, crowds the lungs, and turns a simple walk around the block into a major chore. In fact, overweight dogs suffer much the same risks and consequences as overweight humans. Malnourished dogs don’t have it any better. Lacking crucial nutrients can lead to serious nutritional issues, too. Mix all ingredients well. Pinch off pieces of the dough and roll them into two-inch balls. Bake biscuits at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Let them cool, then store in an airtight container. Storing Dog Treats - In general you should store dog treats the same way you would homemade people cookies. That being said, there are two main variables that determine storage time - the amount and type of fat in the recipe and your local weather conditions. If your recipe uses fats such as butter, or meat bits or juices then it will be more prone to rancidity than a recipe that uses some vegetable oil or shortening. Your treats may mold or spoil much faster in humid or very hot climates. Refrigeration and Freezing - Refrigeration will prolong the life of more fragile dog treats. Make sure to store in a tightly sealed container or zip lock bag. You can also freeze most treats in zip lock freezer bags. Allow to thaw completely before use.use a smaller cutter if you have a smaller dog.

Therapy Dogs - A Simple Love The depth of the supporting role of the quiet, humble therapy dog is sometimes hard to see. How Much Should We Feed Our Pets? This is a simple question, but not such a simple answer. A simple dictum is feed them all they need but less than they want. They have many nutrient needs, including energy – calories, proteins – amino acids, fiber – non digested carbohydrates, vitamins – micro nutrients used as metabolic activators for all body function, and minerals – enzyme and co-enzyme constituents, needed to digest and metabolize the food nutrients. Next, the body weight or size is a major factor in determining food intake requirements. Age, gender (male, female, neuter), activity and life stage (breeding, lactating, and growth) are all factors considered in determining the amount to feed. The nutritionist determines the amount of calories in a given food and recommends the feeding amounts according to the metabolic formula; Food intake in kilocalories = BWt¾ x (120 to 150) where BWt = body weight in kilograms to the ¾ power. The 25% variation between 120 150 represents part of the amount of variance that exists between breed and individual animals. This is why determining exactly how much to feed your dog is so difficult to calculate when looking at the feeding recommendations on the package. To do this calculation, the kilocalories of metabolizable energy (ME) in a given food must be known. Unless this is expressed on the package, it is not easily determined. Most dog foods will vary between 2500 kcal per kilogram (kg) for a lite food to 4200 kcal for a high protein, high fat food. The feeding tables are based on all of these factors and are expressed usually in cups per day as a factor of age, activity, and in some cases breed. In addition the higher the caloric density the more dense is the food. In other words a cup of a lite food weighs less than a cup of high density performance food. How often should I feed my Pet? Some dogs, if fed once a day will act hungry, which may cause the owner to feed more food so the dog will not act hungry. Treats, snacks and supplements are major factors in determining the amount of food required per day. Most of these items are high in fat and carbohydrates and low in protein and fiber. They add calories and may offer few essential nutrients, but they will affect how much you feed as well as how your pet looks and acts. continued next page 58

Now we get down to the individual dog being fed a specific food. One food may recommend feeding for an 18 lb., small to medium breed dog from 1 to 1¼ cups per day. However, if this dog is less than 5 years old, is allowed to be outside most of the day and is very active, then this may not be enough. Taking another case where this same dog is confined in an apartment all day and is allowed outside only once or twice daily and then only on a lead and only walking. In this case it may only require ¾ of a cup a day. Single Stream Recycling Single stream recycling refers to a system in which all recyclables are co-mingled in a separate recycle tote. Items no longer need to be sorted by the resident into separate bins. In single stream, both the collection and processing systems are designed to handle this mixture of recyclables, with materials being separated for reuse. Rocky Mtn. Baby Beef Dog Treats This recipe is flavored using beef (or other flavored) baby food. This is a very easy to make recipe. Frosting is optional. Prep time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes Yield: 2 Dozen

Ingredients 2 3/4 cups whole wheat flour 1/2 cup powdered milk 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1 egg 6 tablespoons vegetable oil 8-10 tablespoons water 2 small jars strained baby food (beef, chicken, lamb, or liver)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients together (except water) in a large bowl and stir until combined. Add the water in a tablespoon at a time until the dough comes together and is workable. It will be a little stick. Knead the dough for about 3 minutes until the dough is smooth. Place the dough on a floured board. Roll out to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut with bone-shaped cookie cutter and place biscuits on an un-greased baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 min. Makes approximately 2 dozen doggie biscuits. Please note that 3" dog treats are pretty large. You may want to use a smaller cutter if you have a smaller dog. Cats & Vets Are you one of those people who hate taking their cat to the veterinarian? You are not alone. Research says that 38% of people with cats get stressed just thinking about a vet visit. Most people say their cats hate going to the vet even more than they fear taking them. You can do some things to make it easier on your cats to get the health care they need. Make the Carrier Fun Leave the carrier out and regularly feed their favorite treats in it, making it a pleasant place to hang out. Keep the same bedding in the carrier so their scent travels with them. Cover the Carrier Drape a towel over the carrier when you travel. Cats calm in quiet, dark places, so eliminating the sights and sounds of travel should decrease their stress. Practice Car Rides Once they are used to the carrier, do some practice runs. Start by just taking them to the door, then back. Then take them out to the car, then back. Gradually work up to spending time in the car just sitting, then with the motor on, then driving around the block. Don’t forget the treats! Play Doctor You can get your cats more used to an exam while you’re relaxed and petting them. Start by gently handling their paws. Gradually increase the time you can hold them. While you’re scratching their chins, gently start to open their mouths and touch teeth. Again, treats always help. Calm & Soothe Along with staying calm yourself, you can make the trip less stressful by spraying a little Comfort Zone Feliway on their bedding.
