accines can prevent many diseases and help your pets live longer and healthier lives. Following are some facts about a few diseases that are pertinent to pets living on the Front Range. Rabies- Rabies can be transmitted by many wild animals including bats, raccoons, foxes, and skunks. Currently we are seeing an increase in the number of rabid skunks along the Front Range. The best way to protect against this deadly disease is to keep both dogs and cats vaccinated and minimize their contact with wild animals. Leptospirosis- Leptospirosis is a disease that can be transmitted by rats, mice, deer, foxes, and other wild animals and their urine. This disease attacks the liver and kidneys and can cause severe damage in a short period of time. Currently the vaccine protects for the four (of eight) most common types of Leptospirosis. Canine Influenza- Canine Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory infection that is prevalent in Colorado and can be quite severe. It is a relatively new virus and consequently most dogs are susceptible to it. It is easily spread between dogs at dog parks, boarding or grooming facilities, and other social settings. For further information about these and other preventable disease please talk with your veterinarian. DATE GIVEN

ALL ABOUT VACCINATIONS
All About Vaccinations
WHAT IS AN EMERGENCY?
What is an Emergency? By Lee Wilwerding, DVM
here are many different degrees of the same problem that could look very similar. Vomiting could be a simple upset stomach or a gastric foreign body. One is an emergency, one might not be. So, what is an emergency is a simple question without a simple answer. Here are some tips and generalities to help determine that answer.
u Notice how your pet acts when they are healthy. Be concerned if they
are more quiet than normal or they don’t respond to you as normal. Vomiting once from a puppy that continues to be very happy and excited, may not be an emergency. BUT if he vomits and acts uncomfortable, then that is an emergency. Sometimes these things are subtle so you really need to know your pet. u Toxins should always be taken seriously. Any ingestion of a chemical or medication that was not prescribed by a veterinarian warrants a call to the ER. Many household medications can cause problems for pets—Tylenol and even ibuprofen if not given as directed by a veterinarian. Pets are often getting into human medications. If they do, you need to call the ER. u Garage chemicals, specifically antifreeze, are always an emergency. This will damage your pet’s kidneys very quickly. There is treatment for it, but it is must be started soon. u Rat poison, or any pesticide or rodenticide if ingested means they should be seen right away even if they seem ok. When rat poison is eaten by your pet, they will act perfectly fine for many days, but then the problems show up and by this time they are in far worse condition than if they had been seen immediately. u Seizures occur often with pets A single seizure that comes and goes quickly, may not be an emergency. Seizures that repeat or get more severe are emergency and your pet should receive medications to stop the seizures before their cumulative effects cause harm. u Lacerations also have different degrees of seriousness. There are the simple ones and there are the deep ones where blood vessels and tendons can be cut. Any deep laceration should be seen quickly, especially if there is profuse bleeding. Lacerated tendons can be fixed if they are treated immediately. But any laceration will benefit from early treatment. Infection can be headed off by quick cleaning of the wounds and appropriate medications if indicated. In this case there is one good piece of advise I can give, remove your metal lawn edging from your yard. This is notorious for causing the worst and deepest paw lacerations. 8

HOME TWEET HOME
Home Tweet Home! Housing and Cages for Birds
our bird’s cage is her home, tweet, home-and it is up to you to make sure it is as comfortable and clean, sturdy and safe as possible. A well-made cage and accessories can be expensive, especially those for larger birds - but it is the most important investment you will make for your pet. Always buy the largest, most well-constructed cage you can afford. No matter the species, your bird should have enough room to stretch and flap her wings and fly from perch to perch. A typical cage for smaller birds should be at least 18 inches tall and 15 inches from front to back. Canaries and finches prefer a cage that's wider, rather than taller, and parakeets like a tall cage with horizontal bars they can climb. The bars should be spaced only .4 inches apart to prevent escape or injury. Larger birds such as cockatoos need roomier accommodations. Go for a cage three or four feet high and three feet across.
Ready to set up your new pet's digs? Location is everything. Place the cage in a warm, bright part of the house, close to where the action is but away from drafts and off the floor. Avoid the kitchen at all costs.Birds are extremely sensitive to fumes, and those from self-cleaning ovens and Teflon-coated cookware, if overheated, can be fatal. Do not place the cage in direct sunlight. This could cause your bird to overheat.
Once you have found a prime location for the cage, you may want to install several perches at differing heights: one, of course, at level with the food dishes. Opt for varying sizes so your pet can exercise her feet. Wooden perches work great, and fruit-tree branches, if you can find them, are preferred by many avian caretakers. Be sure they have not been sprayed with any chemicals, and wash and dry them before fitting them in the cage. Avoid cherry wood, which is toxic, and sandpaper perches that can be tough on tender avian feet. Most cages are equipped with a removable grate for easy cleaning, but you'll need to cover the bottom of the cage with plain paper, paper bags cut to size or processed corn cobs. Newspaper is fine, as long as it has been printed with non-toxic, soy-based inks. Change the paper daily.
To keep the cage in tip-top condition, it must be thoroughly cleaned twice a month or so. Droppings and other debris left to sit can cause bacteria to build up, which can make your bird ill. Wash the cage, perches, toys and dishes with a disinfectant solution. Rinse well, and make sure everything's dry before you return your bird to her castle.

We offer a wide choice of memorialization items and various cremation options. We are available to assist you in making a decision that will be dignified and respectful, and will accommodate your needs as well. There are three primary alternatives for a pet’s aftercare: Private Cremation (the pet is the only animal placed in the crematory); Partitioned Cremation (several pets are placed in isolated zones within the cremation chamber – there is limited commingling of ashes); and Communal Cremation (multiple animals are cremated together without any form of separation – these remains are not returned to the owner).
In order to ensure that your pet is treated with the utmost care, each and every pet is individually identified and tracked carefully through the cremation process, with the pet’s remains being returned to the owner when the process is complete. We make every effort to return a pet’s remains to the owner within 2-3 days, with delays only in the event of a special order urn. We have a large variety of urns for pet-owners to choose from. These include wood, ceramic, pottery, marble, brass, biodegradable paper, and cardboard scattering urns. Some people opt for providing their own urn. We welcome pet owners who wish to visit our facility prior to their pet’s passing, in order to plan for aftercare in advance of the need.
We offer home pick-up of deceased pets; we also accept pets at our facility, by appointment. We are able to accommodate a variety of pets at our facility. In addition to dogs, cats, and pocket-pets, we provide services for birds, llamas and alpacas, big cats, miniature horses, large snakes, goats, horses and other farm animals. At Homeward Bound, we know losing a pet is never easy. We can help you honor and remember them. 2012 PETACULAR PET DIRECTORY

PET DENTAL CARE
Pet Dental Care By Dr. Russell Welfare, DVM North Powers Animal Hospital

ragon Breath, Green Fuzzy Teeth, Touchy Teeth, and Billy Bob Mouth. All of us have seen pets with problem mouths, but most people don’t know that by the age of 3 years a full 85% of pets will have periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the most common clinical condition in adult dogs and cats and is completely preventable. Signs of Dental Disease in Dogs and Cats Bad breath Teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar Loose teeth A sensitive or painful mouth Drooling or dropping food from the mouth Bleeding from the mouth Loss of appetite or loss of weight (this combination can result from diseases of many organs, and early veterinary exam is important). Often these signs will develop gradually and are difficult to notice. I see animals on a regular basis whose owners describe as “acting grumpy” or “getting old,” but when we fix their dental disease they start acting “like puppies again!” Dental disease has been linked to many long term problems. Often they are directly related to the amount of tartar and the length of time it is present, but some significant problems can occur early in the course of dental disease. Problems related to Dental Disease Red, swollen, painful gums Infection at the gumline or at the roots of the teeth Gum loss or bone loss around the teeth Tooth loss or broken teeth Hole (Fistula) formation from the oral to the nasal cavity Damage to other organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys
These problems can be difficult and expensive to treat, but if addressed early they can often be completely avoided. Prevention of these problems in pets (and in people!) consists of frequent removal of the 24

A professional dental cleaning should include the following: Pre-anesthetic exam - This examination allows your vet to minimize the risk associated with anesthesia. Today’s advanced anesthetic protocols allow us to safely anesthetize and recover many patients, even older ones. Anesthesia monitoring - Monitoring your pet’s vital signs (temperature, heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and others) helps ensure safety and allows your veterinarian to adjust the anesthesia as needed. Dental radiographs - Radiographs (X-rays) of the teeth allow your veterinarian to evaluate below the gum line for any abnormalities that cannot be detected by examination alone. Scaling and polishing - This removes the tartar and smooths the surface of the teeth to slow down the recurrence of bacterial accumulation and tartar. Scaling under the gumline is one of the most important steps in a good dental. Fluoride treatment - Fluoride helps strengthen the enamel and decrease future plaque formation. Most dogs and cats will need regular dental cleanings (just like people) as tartar recurs. By addressing dental care at home you can decrease the progression of the disease and often the frequency of subsequent dental cleanings. Home care should include: Brushing teeth - Just like people, this is the best way to slow the progression of tartar
Oral rinses - Effective at decreasing the bacterial count in the mouth
Proven dental diets - Be careful, many “dental” diets are not proven to decrease tartar
Dental chews - Additives in these chews decrease bacteria and reduce plaque on the teeth Water additives - Decrease bacteria in the mouth
Always discuss home care with your veterinarian. Some methods may be more effective or feasible for your pet, but the more consistent you are, the better the long term outcome will be. With a little routine care you can extend the length and quality of your pet’s life!

any of us have pets, especially dogs and feel good being around them....but sometimes something goes wrong - perhaps our animal gets set upon by a large dog that's loose from its yard or maybe we are walking alone and one comes bounding out of a gate, large, barking and fierce. Most of us know the reality of a situation like that....stay calm...and don't look the dog in the eye. Easier said than done! What automatically happens is that our nervous system kicks in with some fear feelings. Fear is actually a protection mechanism within our subconscious minds and the nervous system is trying to stop us going near the fierce dog by giving us fear. However, we, with our conscious minds meanwhile are saying "ok, so I can handle this...stay calm...walk on..." etc. Again, most of us know that animals can sense fear and will respond to it, no matter how calm we are trying to appear!
As a Hypnotherapist we call this first encounter of the furry kind the "initial sensitizing response". In other words we've responded to the situation and had a fear reaction. If we are lucky that may fade quickly and if we don't have another event like that all will probably be well. However, if we do have another similar incident in the not too distant future - then real fear kicks in - in other words it multiplies. Every fear is like this - fear of heights, planes, public speaking - you name it....the fear just gets bigger each time....a re-enforcing response. It's the job of the subconscious primitive as it is - to do this. So how do you get rid of a fear?
Well, we've all heard of facing our fears and that can work so long as you can control the fear - staying cool and calm and being able to get "past" the fear and respond in a friendly manner. Not everyone can do that - so they need help.
The clue here to getting help is that fear is part of the subconscious. As adults our subconscious minds represent 90% of our minds and it works at 230,000 faster than our conscious minds! This tells you just how powerful it is and… guess what....it's not accessible to us as adults "consciously" without help!. This means we access our subconscious automatically but cannot go in there and remove a nasty feeling or fear ourselves. Now you understand why the subconscious is considered the "primitive" and "survival" part of our minds. Removing the fear after a traumatic event is part of the everyday work that a qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist does. In this particular instance, the negative feelings attached to any “dog incident” can be desensitized continued next page

GROOMING GUIDE
Grooming Guide professional Pet Groomer does so much much more than just keep our pets looking great and smelling fantastic. A Pet Groomer can also discover potential health problems early, such as ear infections, skin abnormalities, or tooth decay. No matter which establishment you choose, always seek a groomer that has been certified through the NDGAA to ensure proper education.
Cats have very oily coats and need to be bathed even more often than dogs. People have believed for centuries that cats groom themselves, but it’s just not true. These checklists will help your groomer with your pet’s visits.

ith so many commercial brands of dog and cat food it can be difficult to know what to select for your animal companion. Some of the common ingredients in commercial pet food can be of an unpredictable quality. Other concerns in commercial pet foods include potential contamination with different toxins such as molds, pesticide residues, drugs and during one of the most recent and widespread food recalls substitution with harmful toxic ingredients.
Pet food may be labeled as “complete and balanced” if it meets the standards set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials or AAFCO; however, this label only implies a minimum standard has been met for certain nutrients. AAFCO labeling is designated for the average pet and does not differentiate between the specific nutrient needs of individuals such as a senior dog with renal insufficiency. The following guidelines can direct you to a good quality food: l
l l l
l l l l l l l l l
l
Select brands with an AFFCO label that references feeding trial rather than nutrient profiles only Seek brands that are promoted to be natural or organic Look for a named meat listed first (e.g., chicken)
Select brands with a named meat or meal (e.g., chicken meal) rather than a product with “by-product meal” or “meat and bone meal” Avoid foods with by-product as the only source of protein
Avoid foods with an unnamed fat such as animal digest or animal fat Avoid foods with grain by-products such as wheat gluten
Look for whole grains in the food (grain free foods are also available) Avoid foods with sugars or sweeteners such as corn syrup Avoid purchasing a generic or store brand
Do not feed foods with dyes or artificial colors Do not feed semi-moist foods
Select brands that have been naturally preserved such as with vitamin E rather than with synthetic preservatives such as BHT or BHA Always check the expiration date before purchasing and store dry food in a cool, dry, non-porous container to prevent spoilage
As with any food choice your animal companion should be closely monitored for any potential reactions to a flavor or brand of food. Nutritional components in foods can be implicated in triggering a number of diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, allergic skin disease, and bladder and kidney stones. Your veterinarian can further address any health concerns.

Easy Peanut Butter Dog Treat Cookies By Dr. Sally Lane, DVM Homemade dog biscuits or cookies can be easy and fun to do. You know the quality of each ingredient and can adapt the recipe to your dog’s special needs and tastes. This recipe is simple to assemble— no cookie cutters are needed. When selecting your ingredients look for organic choices whenever possible.
The recipe can use oat & brown rice flour instead of wheat. Because peanut butter is used in these cookies they are not low calorie and should be given to your dog as a treat occasionally in small amounts. Recipe makes about 36 cookies & will last up to 2 weeks Peanut Butter & Molasses Cookie Ingredient List 4 tbsp blackstrap molasses ½ cup natural unsalted peanut butter (crunchy or smooth) 2 cups whole wheat flour (or substitute with 1 cup oat flour & 1 cup brown rice flour) 1-1/2 cup rolled oats (not instant) 1 cup filtered water or spring water 4 tbsp quality vegetable oil (such as safflower oil) Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 350F 2. In a large mixing bowl whisk together blend together the peanut butter, molasses, water, and vegetable oil 3. Combine the oats and flour and add to wet ingredients 4. Mix well and drop by tablespoonfuls on to an ungreased non stick baking sheet (pressing down on the cookies to flatten) 5. Bake 25 min or until done. Check cookies often.
When cool enough to eat give your dog a taste. Store biscuits in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. 42

BENEFITS OF A RAW DIET
Benefits of a Raw Diet By Sarah M. Frey
ood is our fuel, it has the power to heal when used correctly and harm when not. As we continue to learn more about our own nutrition, we tend to use that same information to guide the nutrition of our pets. However, when it comes to your pet, it is important not to feed foods that have been altered or deteriorated by a cooking process. Feeding raw, wholesome foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids, is the most appropriate way to mimic the diet your dog would have eaten in the wild. Despite being domesticated and having evolved for generations, dogs still maintain the same digestive system as their ancestor, the wolf. Feeding a raw diet is the best way to allow your dog to fully utilized his or her digestive system and receive the most nutrition from the food consumed. It is also important to understand why the raw diet is so different from the standard kibble diet. Unlike standard kibble, there are very few carbohydrates in a raw diet. This is because dogs do not metabolize carbohydrates for energy as humans do. Dogs get their energy from the breakdown of proteins, which should therefore be making up 60-80% of their diet. The further an animal’s diet departs from its evolutionary diet, the more health problems they are likely to develop. A biologically appropriate raw diet maximizes your pet's health and longevity, which means degenerative diseases, allergies, and many other ailments are enormously diminished or completely avoided. The benefits of switching to a raw diet are numerous; a happier, healthier pet with clean teeth, better coat, and fewer medical problems, to name a few. Feeding raw allows you to spend more time with your pet and less time grooming, scooping the yard, and visiting the vet to address problems caused by poor diet. In short, a raw diet helps to ensure that your dog will live the longest, healthiest life possible.

RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS
You Have a Pet. Now What? very day, your pet shows you unconditional love … all he wants from you is the same in return. But owning an animal means more than throwing him a ball, patting his on the head, or brushing his fur. Caring for a pet also means responsibility — to both that pet and the community. It means knowing all of Spot’s needs and taking care of him, while being considerate of others. But what exactly does that entail?
The Animal Law Enforcement Department stresses four key components to responsible pet ownership: Provide a license and permanent identification Spay or neuter Provide regular socialization, training, exercise & veterinarian care Do not allow animals to become a threat or nuisance within the community.
License Me. It’s the Law. An animal license and permanent identification is your pet’s ticket home. Your dog is required by law to be licensed in Centennial, Colo.Springs, El Paso County, Fountain, Monument, and Pueblo City and County. Cats are also required by law to be licensed in Colorado Springs and Pueblo City/County.
A current license makes it much more likely that if your pet gets lost, you will be reunited. Permanent identification like a microchip or tattoo also increases the likelihood of your lost animal finding its way back to your loving arms. All pets should be permanently identified (microchipped or tattooed). Animal Control Officers will attempt to return all currently licensed animals home prior to transporting them to the shelter. Licensing provides a critical source of funding for animal care and control programs. License your pet at licenseapet.org
I Love Everyone. Make sure I don’t love too much. It’s simple: spayed or neutered pets are more likely to enjoy good health and a long life. Spaying and neutering: Reduces pet overpopulation — 43,000 animals are euthanized in Colorado every year. Significantly decreases the cost of licensing.

Sit. Stay. Smile. Training builds confidence and strengthens the human-animal bond. A well-socialized pet will help ensure that he is able to live with as little stress as possible and be welcome in any setting. It is important to your pet’s health and mental wellbeing to exercise regularly. (It’s good for you too!) Keeping vaccinations up to date and making regular visits to a veterinarian allows you to enjoy a healthy pet. Take an obedience class to strengthen the relationship between you and your dog. Play with your pet and provide socialization opportunities to help reduce behavioral problems. Ensure your pet is groomed regularly, and receives the optimal amount of quality pet food & fresh water. Visit a veterinarian. It’s important your pet sees a veterinarian on a regular basis for vaccinations and check-ups. An ounce of prevention is truly worth a pound of cure.
Howdy Neighbor! Know and obey all animal laws. Make sure you have a secure enclosure so your pet will not run loose.
Know your responsibilities and the laws related to pets. Leash your dogs when off your property, except when walking in a designated off-leash area. Are you a dog owner? Scoop the poop! You must pick up and properly dispose of your dog’s defecation both on and off your property. Ensure your dog does not bite, injure, chase, threaten, bark, howl at or disturb anyone. Keep your cats inside. Or at a minimum, cats should be confined to your property and be permanently identified at all times.
The Animal Law Enforcement Department strives to ensure that animals, their owners and neighbors live in safety and harmony.

10 DOG TRAINING QUESTIONS
Top 10 Questions to Ask
(before signing up for Dog Training Classes or Private Lessons) our new puppy-dog is pulling you down the sidewalk and jumping on people, so you go on-line to look for a dog trainer, and find a bi-zillion listed. How do you decide? To make it even harder, anyone can say they are a dog trainer or a behaviorist (or behavior specialist, behavior consultant, behavior counselor, etc). Our industry is not regulated, so it's buyer beware. Besides asking all the basic questions (starting date and time, cost, length of class, number of lessons, how many dogs, trainers, and assistants per class, location of the facility, and required vaccinations), here are the "Top 10 Questions"(with answers) to ask:
1. When and how did you become a trainer? Good trainers spend several years gaining experience dealing with many breeds and their behavioral issues. They understand dog behavior, various training methods, and how dogs and people learn. Good trainers gain this experience and knowledge in several ways before teaching classes and handling behavior cases on their own. Some are listed below:
Apprenticing with or assisting an experienced trainer for a few years (find out their background too) Volunteering at a local shelter or rescue (training & handling dogs) Working at a kennel or daycare Attending seminars/conferences Reading books by many different authors Membership in professional organizations Attending a training academy or in-store/franchise training program
If there are assistants or other trainers helping with or teaching class, find out about their background also.
2. What were the last few books you read & seminars/conferences you attended? Good trainers continue to learn.Go online (check the library too) to see if you agree with the various speakers' and authors' philosophy and methods. 3. May I come watch a class? You probably won’t be able to watch a private lesson in someone’s home, but you should be allowed to sit in on the trainer teaching a group class. When you go, see if the dogs and people are having fun. Ask the students how they like the class. 68

10 DOG TRAINING QUESTIONS
4. Are you certified? Certification provides additional insight into a trainer's philosophy, experience, and knowledge. These organizations provide certification or endorsement and require continuing education. Certification Council of Pet Dog Trainers (www.ccpdt.com) The National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors (www.nadoi.org) (endorsement only) The International Association of Canine Professionals (www.dogpro.org) The Animal Behavior Society (www.animalbehavior.org) International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (www.iaabc.org) Dog training academies and in-store/franchise training programs certify graduates based on their curriculum. 5. What training tools and methods do you use? There are a wide range of answers. In a nutshell, dog training involves manipulating pleasant and unpleasant consequences (rewards and corrections). With reward-based methods (treats, play, praise, clickers, etc), dogs learn which behaviors are rewarded, so they repeat those behaviors making them stronger. Reward-based methods rarely cause behavioral issues. With correction-based methods (leash jerking, choke, prong, electronic collars, etc), dogs learn to avoid being corrected. Corrections can also increase a dog's stress level causing behavioral issues. 6. Have you worked with my dog's specific problem before? If the trainer has only done one or two behavior cases like yours, you may want a trainer with more experience. 7. Do you offer a guarantee? How well your dog is trained is a function of your interest, time commitment, consistency, and abilities. Because trainers have no control over this part of the process, they should not guarantee results. 8. Do you provide written homework? It's hard to remember everything, so the more detailed the better. Plus, if you miss a lesson, you can refer to your homework. 9. Can my family come to class too? If you are taking a family dog training class, the answer should be yes (space permitting), though there may be an age requirement for children to handle dogs in class. 10. What do you cover in class or private lessons? Puppy kindergarten and beginner classes usually cover sit, down, stay, attention, come, off, leave it, walk on a leash, puppy playtime, housetraining, socializing your dog, desensitizing your dog to touch, grooming, clipping nails, & brushing teeth. Private lessons can be tailored to fit your specific needs.

Is Your Pet Missing? Here’s what to Do!
ost pets are a major cause of heartbreak for many families. Here are a few suggestions to help keep your pet safe at home. l

Spay and neuter all pets. Spayed and neutered dogs and cats are less likely to wander off compared to un-neutered animals. This is only one of the many benefits to your pet.
All pets should have an identification tag on the collar. The tag should have the animals name as well as your name and telephone number Familiarize your dog with its’ surroundings. Allow the dog to walk around the yard and develop that as his or her own territory. Cats on the other hand should be kept indoors at all times.
Consider having your pets microchipped. This is a procedure that can be done by your veterinarian. A small microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, is injected under the skin between your pets back. If the collar and tag is lost, the microchip can be detected at an animal shelter or veterinary clinic. The information from the microchip can be used to identify who owns the pet.
If your pet is lost contact the local Humane Society and animal shelter to see if they’ve found it. Also place flyers with a description and a photograph of the pet around your neighborhood. Start your search by heading north; some experts think 75 percent of all lost dogs will travel north.
Contact the veterinary hospitals in the area. If your pet was injured a Good Samaritan may have taken it to their veterinarian.
Prevention is always the best course of action. Keep your dog in a well-fenced area. Never allow animals to roam. Instruct children on how to be responsible for their pets. Keep the doors and gates latched. When leaving home with your pet always have dogs on a leash and cats in a carrier.

ASK THE DOC
Ask the Doc By Jeffery Gross, DVM
an you give me some information as to when I should or shouldn’t take him to the veterinarian?
I think that when it comes to taking your pet to the veterinarian, it depends not only on what symptoms you are seeing but also your own pet’s history. If your pet ingests some type of toxin, a phone call to poison control and a trip to your veterinarian should be done immediately. Some of the most common and potentially most serious toxins include antifreeze, products with xylitol, rat poison, cleaning products, Tylenol and ibuprofen. Chocolate can certainly be toxic but it depends on the amount, type of chocolate and size of the dog. See your veterinarian immediately if your pet is having any of these problems: l vomiting continuously l straining to urinate without producing urine, l having trouble breathing, l tender or bloated appearance to abdomen, l showing pale or blue/gray gums l bleeding uncontrollably l a wound or laceration l any traumatic event(hit by car, falling from height, dog fight) Make an appointment as early as possible to determine the cause of any of these symptoms: If your pet is urinating inappropriately, coughing or sneezing, has a decreased appetite, or limping or seems painful in their limbs
Conversely, if your pet vomits once, coughs or sneezes a few times, you can monitor them at home. If they continue to vomit, sneeze or cough uncontrollably or if there is evidence of blood in vomit or when sneezing or coughing, you should see your veterinarian immediately. Soft stool or diarrhea in a healthy ADULT dog may not require immediate medical attention but evidence of blood or other material in the feces or a few days of symptoms does necessitate a trip to your veterinarian. A puppy or kitten with any vomiting or diarrhea should be seen by your veterinarian ASAP. All things considered, if you feel something merits a visit to your veterinarian, then it does. It is better to be cautious than to regret not seeing your veterinarian.

SHOULD YOU DECLAW YOUR CAT?
Should You Declaw Your Cat? f your cat is damaging furniture or carpeting, declawing may be a viable option if other alternatives fail. It is not recommended to declaw outdoor cats since it is their primary means of defense and greatly reduces their ability to climb and escape predators. Outdoor cats need their claws, and they generally sharpen them on trees.
Other the other hand, indoor cats do not need sharp claws for defense. Without nails, they are less likely to climb curtains and screens, and damage your furniture.
If you decide to declaw, have the surgery performed at an early age 3 or 4 months, if possible. Your vet can spay or neuter your cat at the same time. The declaw surgery removes only the nails on the front feet. After surgery, each foot is wrapped in pressure bandage for 24 hours to decrease bleeding. You can also use Pet Swabs Styptic Sticks to stop bleeding. Pain medication may be given while the cat is still under general anesthesia.
Alternatives to Declawing
If your cat's nails are causing problems but declawing is not an option for you, here are some alternatives: l

Clip your cat's nails every three to four weeks with products such as Bamboo Professional Nail Care Products. If your cat resists pedicures, you might be able to clip the nails of one foot or even one or two nails a week. Or you can pay to have your vet or local groomer clip your cat's nails. Provide several high-quality scratching posts to give your pet a choice. Some cats prefer horizontal posts. Others like a vertical post such as Zanies Cat Scratching Board.
Apply Soft Paws to your cat's nails. These are plastic nail guards that you glue right over your cat's own nails. They need to be replaced when they fall off.
