JAWBREAKING She started out selling hand-made jewelry from her bedroom, now, this 19 year old tycoon has had her designs worn by actresses from Degrassi, to bands like Simple Plan and One Direction. Aly Silverio is one of the many poster children for “if you can dream it, you can achieve it. And achieve she has.

SUBJECT: aly silverio AGE: 20 LOCATION: Raleigh, NC OCCUPATION: owner/designer, Jawbreaking

PM: It seems like a good first question for every interview, so Miss Aly, tell us a little about yourself! AS: I’m Aly. I’m 20. I spend way too much time getting sucked into numerous television series on Netflix. All I eat is fast food and I’m a crime shoe enthusiast (especially Criminal Minds, I wish Matthew Gray Gubler would love me back). I’m the world’s worst texter and the biggest procrastinator. And of course, when I’m not wasting my life away with Netflix and eating Chickfila sandwiches, I run a clothing company called Jawbreaking.

PM: It says in your “Story” tab on the website that your biggest inspiration when asked is “life”, what would you say your secondary inspiration comes from? AS: Probably movies and music. Like right now, I’m starting to learn more about Audrey Hepburn and watch more of the movies that she was in. I’ve always loved her and I find her inspiring. Sometimes, even a simple line from a song gets me thinking of a million different design ideas. PM: Who would you say are the top 5 most supportive people in your life who keep you going? AS: Definitely my mom, she’s been there from the start and I’m lucky to have her by my side and helping me along this journey (along with the rest of my family). My boyfriend, Stephen, and of course all of my closest friends. It’s hard to say 5 people because I guess they’re more like clusters of people. But of course, my customers are the sole reason why I keep doing what I do. Without them, Jawbreaking simply would not be what it is today. PM: As an independent shop owner myself, owner to owner, what would you say the biggest struggle you faced when Jawbreaking was first coming out? AS: Jawbreaking first started as a jewelry company, I was only 15 at the time, so I literally had no idea what I was doing. I was really just doing what I thought was right and then I would learn from my mistakes. I’d like to think that I didn’t have any problems to being with because I was doing it for fun at the time. But then I started to the clothing line three years later, it was difficult financially. You really have to learn how to budget your money will and not bite off more than you can chew.

PM: What’s a day in the life of Aly Silverio like? AS: I try (keyword: try) and wake up at a decent hour every day to get to the office/ So I’d wake up at 9 and get ready to go to the office. I used to have the office in my bedroom until February this year, so it’s new to me having to get up and actually “go to work” seeing as that I have never had a real job before! I’ll go to work and do everything with the help of my interns and/or my new employee, Jenny. Work entails customer service like answer e-mails. fulfilling orders, doing inventory, or whatever else is on the schedule for that day. I’ll basically work til 5 or 6 and then either go home or go out with my friends. It’s pretty much routine but it’s a good kind of routine, one I don’t mind repeating every day. PM: How does it feel to have hands like 1D and actresses like Cris Prosperi wearing Jawbreaking for the whole world to see? AS: Incredible! It’s amazing to see people like that wear my brand. It’s like, they don’t have to wear it. They are actually choosing to which lets me know that they truly do like that shirt and that’s a really good feeling. PM: If you could collaborate with any designer or model in the world, who would it be and why? AS: I would really love to collaborate with Lauren Conrad on a t-shirt line. She’s so simple and classy…I love the about her. Her clothing line is exactly that, too. It would be cool to see what input she would have on designing tshirts instead of blouses and pretty silhouette dresses. She’s someone I really look up to as well. I admire how she went from a reality TV star to creating this empire of fashion lines, books, and more. If it were to be a collaboration with a model…Cara Delevinge. Hands down. I know for a fact she would contribute so many good ideas and she’s the epitome of realness. I love everything about her. PM: I know my cat Sonny keeps me company while I’m printing or making orders, so do you have any furry little business companions that keep the insanity and stress levels low?

AS: My dog Bo is the greatest. Cuddles with him when I get home from work are the best. PM: You seem like a girl who’s full of wanderlust, so do you have any places that you would love to see within the near future? AS: I have always wanted to go to London. That’s definitely next on my list. I really would like to travel anywhere. I love visiting new places and learning all about them. I’d really like to go to Greece, Italy, Australia, and Paris again since the last time I was there it was kind of a school trip so I’d really like to explore it myself! PM: And last but not least, how do you take your tea or coffee? AS: Bleh. I’m not really a tea or coffee person to be honest! I wish I was a coffee person so that I could wake myself up! I do love mocha cookie crumble frappuccinos at Starbucks though. Thank god they’re back for the summer!

HOW TO WEAR Flip the page to check out how your editor would style her top 3 picks from the Jawbreaking line!

OUTFIT #1 DESERT PUNCH

It’s summer, a time where muscle tees, tank tops and bright colors are in favor over everything else in the closet. Well why not have the best of both worlds with an edgy desert rose twist? Pair your ‘Start Living Sugar Skull Destroyed Muscle Tee’ (Jawbreaking, $32) with the Blackbird Bandit shorts (One Teaspoon, $115) for a pop of color. Then keep the edge up with these 1460 Docs (Dr. Martens, $130), and if your arms are small enough, try cuffs on your upper arm above the elbow like this illusions cuff from Forever 21 ($8.50), and this Desert Dweller cuff set from Nasty Gal ($34.95)!

OUTFIT 2

UFO: UNIDENTIFIED FAKIE-ING OBJECT

The perfectly quirky outfit for boarding downtown or the boardwalk with. Top off your “You Are Not Alone”(Jawbreaking, $25) tee with this lightweight Moselle cardigan from Brandy Melville ($59). For your bottom half, keep those legs cool and rockin’ in the Dakota Cut-Offs from Nasty Gal($78), and of course, the favorite street skate shoe, throw on a pair of Canvas Authentics from Vans ($45) in a popping color like this mint! Now just grab your board and you’re ready to head out!

OUTFIT 3 METALLIC DREAMER

We’re going for all-out cute here. So we start off with the ‘Dream Chaser’ muscle tee (Jawbreaking, $25), then keep the dream alive with the Disco Dream skirt from Nasty Gal ($48). We add on a pair of Deena & Ozzy Architectural Peep wedges (Urban Outfitters, $59), and finally, also keep the flower child vibe rolling by placing a coordinating flower crown like this Rouge Pony Meadow Crown (Urban Outfitters, $52). And of course, you can always opt to make your own floral crown if you’re up to it, you never know what sort of magic it might bring!

ALYSSA

She’s the 21-year-old XX chromosome half to this extremely fashionable cousin duo out of Edmonton, Canada. Together they run the blog Ordinary People, and this month, the lovely Alyssa from Canada is out June Blogger Feature.

BEGINNING BOUTIQUE faux leather-alls, YESSTYLE shoes, CHICWISH jacket, WILDFOX bra, ECUGO netted top.

PM: So Ms. Alyssa, tell us a little about yourself! AL: My name is Alyssa Lau, and I’m a 21 year-old Chinese-Canadian from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I am an avid animal love to the point where my heart melts whenever I come across a cute picture and I have a weird obsession with jello.

NAME: Alyssa Lau AGE: 21 LOCATION: Edmonton, Canada OCCUPATION: student, fashion blogger

PM: Every fashion blogger and fashionista started out somewhere, so where would you say you go your start? AL: I’m not exactly sure where, but I’m going to say somewhere on Lookbook.no. How? I have no idea.

PM: Have you always been such a little stylish thing or was it more of an evolution for you and you just emerged one morning from the bedroom dressed with the amazing sense of style you own now? AL: Personal style has always been a bit of an adventure for me. It’s a work in progress. PM: How does it feel to have so many people who are inspired by and adore your fashion sense? AL: To be honest, I still can’t believe people read my blog. PM: It says in your bio on your website that you’re a student, so what field or career are you studying for and do you think that might change before you graduate? AL: I actually just finished my undergraduate and am graduating with a general science degree! As for the career I’m studying for, I can’t quite say at the moment! PM: Out of all the things you’ve accomplished in your young life, what would you say is your most memorable? AL: Graduating with a useless degree! PM: The infamous Number 7 question: If you could work or collaborate with any designer or model out there, who would it be and why? AL: Cara Delevigne, because I had a dream where we were best friends and she seemed really cool. I was pretty upset when I woke up. PM: This is going to be a tough one, I can tell, but what is your absolute most favorite item in your wardrobe? If you need to you can call a tie between two items haha. AL: At this moment, my To Be Announced Pony Ride boots in blue velvet!

PM: Alyssa, you post a lot of pictures of your little fuzzballs on your Insta, so is it safe to say that without them, you’d be lost and halfway to a Looney House by now? AL: Yes, yes it is safe to say that. PM: And last but not least, how do you take your coffee or tea? Or both. AL: Coffee makes me too fidgety. But tea, now that’s a whole different story. I’ll take my (red rose) tea with condenses milk and syrup please!

And there we go folks, you now know a little more about the young lady behind the Ordinary People blog! Now if you’ll look on the next page, you’ll see Alyssa’s top three picks of her favorite outfits from her blog! Be ready to be inspired yet again!

((sun) bathing beauties It’s summer here in the North Hemi, and the beach has been calling all of our names, and with that, so have our bathing suits or the need to buy a new one (or three). But nothing frustrates a girl more than when a suit she tries on looks horrible, it gets the best of us and can quickly end a shopping trip. So this month’s Editor Article is all about helping you find peace with your bathing suit! Article by: Stephanie H.

PROBLEM AREAS We all have them, even the fittest of fit ladies have something about themselves, no matter how small, that they wouldn’t mind seeing change in. For me personally right now, it’s my buns and thighs (but I’m working on it!). A few of the common “problem areas” are the following:  ya bum  ya thighs  having not enough or too much up top  tummy troubles  lack of curves  short legs you want to make longer And those are just a few, you may have one I didn’t list, but chances are it’s similar to one that’s up there! You either have two options when it comes to these, you can either a) workout to achieve the look you want (like I am right now), or b) just learn to except that you are human and yes, you do have flaws but they make you you. Both options aren’t that hard to do, trust me and they will both benefit you greatly in the long-run. What’s not an option? Hating yourself to the point where you starve and start to do not-so-nice things to yourself in order to get somewhere as far as confidence or body goes. You will never get anywhere that way, trust me, I’ve been there, done that, it doesn’t work. Now being as this is a fashion/style magazine, I can’t really help you out when it some to option A, but there are tons and tons of people out there willing to help you, just make sure you do it right and eat enough. I’m talking 1,200 calories+, not a 400 calorie limit and then go for a three hour workout, you’re only slowing yourself and hurting your body there. But if you’re opting for option B, there are tricks out there to help you out, and I’m going to share as many as those as I can with you and give your examples too! So please join me on the next four or so pages as we go through it all!

Onward we go!

small chest, big dreams I have small breast, and so do a lot of other girls, but in today’s world, big breast are so put-upon as something great so for some small-chested ladies, it creates a problem. However though, I was reading one of my Glamour issues earlier this year, and they did a survey that showed 54% of all men surveyed preferred small, natural breast (34 As to be exact, which is what I am FYI). So maybe things are changing? I personally love having small breast. I don’t have to buy heavy-duty sports bras to work out, laying on my stomach doesn’t hurt The Girls, and I can wear all the v-necks and low cut shirts I want. But this article isn’t for me or there wouldn’t even be this sections, it’s for you, the reader! The things you want to look for while shopping are:  ruffles  actually, any tops with details and texture on top  fringes (especially the ones with the fringe on the inner seam)  horizontal stripes/lines  frilly things  bra-frame tops (opt for a pushup frame)  triangle tops Looks like there are plenty of options! And you can find these styles in almost every store you go into that’s selling swim wear, whether it be a one or two piece you’re looking for.

Fringe is so in and so good, no? Well here’s a little crotchet onepiece for you! (Urban Outfitters, $198).

This bandeau top from Nasty Gal ($110) is perfect for creating the illusion of a fuller bust, thanks to the crosshair design of it!

You know how “bigger” people are told not to wear horizontal stripes? Well it’s the opposite for if you want to create the illusion of being bigger, and this bikini from Asos ($31) does that!

Aerie has your favorite push-up frames in swim suits now, like the new Bridget shown here! (Aerie, $46)

dat ass Plenty of girls have junk in the trunk, myself included. And while some have the perfect perky butt and want to show it off in a Brazilian bikini bottom, some of us don’t and would prefer to conceal it as much as possible without wearing shorts the whole time! So here are a few things to keep in mind for our girls with the booty. 

   

If you have short legs as well, opt for a bikini bottom that rises higher, it will both conceal your tush and make your legs look longer. But be sure to avoid boy-short bottoms and skirts because they will only make your legs look shorter and in turn, you tush bigger! Opt for bottoms that have rings, these give you more room and will fit better on your tush than a tie string with can cause the bottom to hit you at the wrong points. If you have longer legs, boy-shorts and skirts are your friends, they conceal and still look really cute! Reach for a plunging neckline; it will distract the eye of anyone on the beach from you behind. Just keep it cute okay? We don’t want to look like we just got off the pole and now are headed to the beach. Color block with a dark bottom (black or navy), and a lighter top, the darker bottom will give the illusion of a smaller tush and the light top will balance it out.

Just remember, and this goes for everyone reading this, these are just guidelines, you don’t have to strictly adhere to them! If you try on a bathing suit and it looks totally cute on you, then buy it! Every body is different so these “rules” may help some, but not others. Just keep that in mind!

For short legs, go for a bottom that raises a little high than usual, but NOT a vintage high-waist style. The higher bottom elongates your legs and makes your bottom look smaller! Try this galaxy print bikini from Romwe ($36).

This mesh panel bikni from Forever 21 ($29) is perfect for concealing your bottom but still looking cute and edgy!

This WILDFOX bikini is not only perfect for hiding the booty, but it’s also a great bikini for someone who’s smallchested. And it ends up working double wonders if you’re like me and have small breast but a donk in the back! (WILDFOX, $78)

TOP HEAVY Boobs are great, everyone loves them, from newborns to your 70-year-old pervy uncle, they come in all shapes and sizes, but sometimes, you’re just handed a bit too much by the Boob Gods. And during the warm months, this can create a problem if you don’t have the right top for to hold them in, and pretty much all of us know how embarrassing it is to flash the whole shoreline because of an ill-fitting top! For our ladies with lovely lady lumps, here are some things to look for and avoid while bathing suit shopping:

     

Triangle tops are your worst enemy and you should avoid them at ALL COST. So are bandeau tops, unless it’s a bra frame, it will just smoosh your breast together into one giant heap. Wearing a v-neck one piece will create the illusion of a slightly smaller bust and contrary to what you might think, hold them in just fine! Halter tops with thick bands are your friends, they give you the added support you need from the bottom! You also want to look for a top with wide straps as well in the halter style. UNDER WIRE UNDER WIRE UNDER WIRE UNDER WIRE! Be extremely cautious of strapless tops, you’re twice if not thrice as likely to fall out and flash someone!!

I love the Jenner girls, and the fact that they now have a collection, including this adorable on-piece, at PacSun($50) makes me super excited! Even if the model is on the small side, this will work for the busty babes out there!

A denim-look bikini may not be everyone’s forte, but this one from Forever 21 ($27) is the perfect example of the thicker strap on the bottom for that support!

Even though in the picture it’s strapless and I said that was a no-no, it does come with straps! Now this style of corset top bikini is not available in the Aerie stores, but it is online and if you ask about it in-store, you can get the free “Store to Door” shipping they offer! This style also comes in three more colors and patterns to choose from! And don’t forget you can mix n’ match their whole swim collection! (Aerie.com, $50)

tummy trouble Not everyone is 100% satisfied with their stomach, that’s a fact, but if you have the right suit, it can do some major work on your confidence! So here’s what you want to look for if you’re trying to cover up that stomach!     

A belted one-piece will cinch you in at the just the right point on your waist to create a sleek hourglass figure! Tankini’s and cami tops are your BFFs, and luckily this year there are tons on tons of cute ones out there in this style! Color block with black, preferably on bottom to balance you out, and plus black is supposed to slimming, right? And empire waist one-piece will work wonder for you, and that goes for everything, not just swim suits! You also get to rock the high-waist bottoms too, which is a good thing because they’re coming back into style and a lot of places are selling some cute and quirky ones!

Now the key to this “problem area” is to have total confidence and know correct posture. Do not slouch for the love of God, it will only make your stomach look worse as well as the rest of you! Shoulders back, flex those abs (don’t suck it in, it will make your ribs stick out and that can give of the wrong impression to people. by flexing your abs you’re not only getting a workout, you’re cinching everything in naturally!), and walk with confident steps. Pretend there is a string coming out of the top of your head that is being held taunt by some invisible force! You’d be amazed at what it can improve, and in the long run, this will prevent back issues!

For those of you who just want to hide a lower belly pooch, this comic-inspired high-waist bikini from Romwe will do the trick! (Romwe, $36). It’s top is also perfect for girls with bigger ‘girls’.

Now if you’re wanting to hide everything, opt for an adorable one-piece like this Tallow one-piece from Urban Outfitters! (UO, $150)

Here’s another highriser, but look at the pattern on the bottom, WILDFOX knows how to do it! The busier the pattern, the better it hides, especially with the space in the middle! (WILDFOX, $155)

in conclusion In conclusion to this month’s editor article, I want you to take this away with you: you know your body far better than I do! So even though I’ve done my research and tried to find the best solutions for each major problem, it may not work for your body, because every one is different. What I’ve listed in the afore pages are simply guidelines for you. I want to help you ladies out, that is my sole purpose with this magazine, to inspire you and help you as well, and I hope I’ve done and been doing that for you all. You should also embrace the fact that, like I stated earlier, you are in-fact human, and you do have flaws, everyone does. The earlier you accept this and stop trying so hard to reach the impossible perfect, the happier you’ll be and the less you’ll worry about silly things. You only live once, and you should enjoy every minute of it!

So like I said, I hope I’ve helped you out in some way. I hope I was able to make it so you can take these notes with you while swimsuit shopping and end up finding something you absolutely both on the hanger and on you, because that’s all that matters is that you like it and it looks great on you! And if I didn’t help you at all, well, I always have the next editor article don’t I?

Lots of love and sunshine, Stephanie xox
