You’re never too old to discover something new! A few years ago, our cover girl, 52 year-old DeAnne Ienna, discovered that she was skilled at mounted archery. I’d never heard of such a sport until just a few months ago, and I discovered that it dates back nearly 2500 years. Today, it is a sport that is growing in popularity and most of the participants (nearly 80%) are women. Who knew?! Meet DeAnne on page 10 and you might discover a new sport for yourself.

I

t was happenstance that led Mardi Arce into her career as a Park Ranger. But, she soon discovered it was her passion and it led her to a happy life taking care of some of our nation’s most beautiful parks. Most recently, she landed in San Antonio

and has been instrumental in guiding four of the magnificent missions to World Heritage Site status. Her story, by Kristy Hurst, starts on page 24. Kristy also had the opportunity to share Kass Carrell’s story (page 34). This fun and quirky fashion designer creates no-nonsense, flattering clothing from natural fabrics and dyes. Her minimalist approach to fashion transcends into all areas of her life. It’s simple and meaningful. There’s a lot to discover in this issue of Moxie! Sit back, turn the page and have fun with us! Be open. Be inspired. Be MOXIE!

I Can Do This! EMPOWERED is the word 52 year-old, DeAnne Ienna, uses to describe how she feels when she’s practicing and competing in her sport, Mounted Archery. “Even if I don’t win anything, I get to participate in this really awesome sport,” she says. “It gives me a bond with these magnificent animals that could take me out in a heartbeat, but they don’t. You develop companionship with them. The feeling of riding an 800-pound animal with no hands, and she does what you ask with only speech and body movement, all while hanging off the side flinging arrows at targets is probably the most incredible thing I’ve ever done. It’s exhilarating!”

M

ounted Archery dates back about 2500 years. It was a major characteristic of Steppe warfare throughout Central Asia and was used by warriors around the world, including the Scythians, Parthians, Huns, Bulgars, Magyars, Mongols, and Turks. The people of these areas were mostly nomadic at the time, following their herds. Their horses were hugely important in their lives and they developed battle strategies and raids as mounted warriors. Now a growing sport in the United States, Mounted Archery involves setting up various courses, from a basic 90-meter run with three targets to no-barrier open courses with targets set at various locations. Riders are scored according to their times and target shots in each run. “We are trying to bring this amazing sport to more people’s attention, and maybe even get it into the Olympics,” DeAnne said. “I have played archery since I was a child,” says DeAnne. “I have also been riding horses since I was small, mostly trail riding, but I did have some issues.” She explains, “When I was three years old, I was yanked off a horse by my neck when my pony ran under a clothes line. Another time, I was taken for a wild ride on a friend’s runaway horse, and then I had a horse stand on my foot until it almost broke. Let’s just say I had some trust issues!” DeAnne’s journey to her sport started with taking medieval riding lessons in 2008, consisting of various sports on 10 MOXIE! SUMMER/FALL 2015

horseback, including jousting, javelin and archery. “I was best at archery,” she said. She took a break when the instructor stopped teaching. In 2011, a web search for horse archery found Trey Schlichting’s, A Company Mounted Archery, in New Braunfels. “I went out as a volunteer. I watched and talked to the riders, pulled arrows, and did whatever else I could to help at the First Championship of the Americas competition. It was one of the coolest looking sports I had seen!” she said. She began taking lessons, and after the first one was hooked! But, after six months of horse archery and general riding skills lessons, she was stalling out. “I couldn’t get past a trot on the archery course and I had to get to a cantor,” she explained. “I was frustrated and stopped training for a while. I continued to help out at the competitions that A Company hosted and remained friends with Trey. But I really missed riding.” “In January of 2013, I went back and tried again. I took a couple of lessons and got used to the track and horses… and then one day it happened! I dropped the reins in a cantor, drew back the bowstring and flung an arrow at the target. I did it! The feeling was awesome. It was my breakthrough - this horse was doing what I asked and I was now a horse archer! I have since participated in several of our local competitions and my mounted archery continues to improve at each practice.”

Riding the horse strengthens core muscles, improves balance and coordination, and strengthens inner thighs and pelvic muscles. The physical benefits of mounted archery are twofold. Riding the horse strengthens core muscles, improves balance and coordination, and strengthens inner thighs and pelvic muscles. When riding at a cantor, it is an excellent cardiovascular workout. The archery portion of this sport is very beneficial in strengthening your core, arms, hands, chest and shoulders. It improves focus and coordination as well.

When asked what she does to prepare for a competition, DeAnne says she practices yoga, lifts light weights, does calisthenics and hula-hoops. “Any exercise I can fit into my regular schedule,” she says. “Emotionally, I get a huge ‘happy’ from riding and shooting. Riding and being with the horses always makes me feel really positive…really cheerful. It gives me social benefits by practicing and competing with other riders. I never feel like it’s a contest since all of us cheer each other on. It feels like a big fun family!” CRAFTSWOMAN AND FASHION DESIGNER DeAnne designs and crafts many of the tools of her trade. “I use a bow based on the Magyar style, made here in the United States. I order the unfinished ones and paint and decorate them myself. The red one I use a lot is named Sol, for the sun. Most of us name our bows.” “I use a quiver I made myself. I do leather work and designed this one to fit my style of pulling arrows of my thigh. It works really well for me and I plan to make more of this style. You can never have enough bows or arrows or quivers...it’s kind of addicting.” DeAnne sews and makes many of her costumes. “I designed a tunic based on early riding clothing in the 11th to 13th centuries,” she said. “It is modified with a modern collar and has gores and gussets to facilitate riding the horse. It allows freedom of movement of my arms when drawing my bow. I make them of linen and it’s incredibly cool for riding here in Texas. And, it keeps me from getting burned out in the sun.” MEAD MAKER A woman of many talents, DeAnne also has a longtime interest in making mead, the oldest known fermented beverage. “Honey wine is made basically from honey, water and yeast,” DeAnne explained. “Fruits and herbs may be added to make different flavors. There is almost no limit to the flavors you can make. I have been making mead for about 12 years. It started out by my mom giving me a beer-making kit. I thought that was fun! Then I tasted some rather poor mead and thought I could do better. That started my mead making journey. I did some research, bought some basic items and went for it. I have recently been entering contests and winning medals. There used to be about 20 companies making mead in the United States, but in the last 10 years there has been a huge interest in the industry. We now have around 150. My husband and I hope to begin a meadery in the very near future.”

HEALTHYyou!

You and Your Legs By Mark F. Kneuper, MD ISTOCKPHOTO/NIKADA

Have you ever thought about varicose veins or those little pesky, unattractive spider veins? Did you know that over 25 million Americans suffer from these conditions? That’s more than coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular disease combined! The sad truth is that many people don’t seek treatment in large part because they think it’s only a cosmetic problem.

T

he symptoms of varicose veins vary widely. There could be burning, itching, aching or cramping leg pain, or leg and ankle swelling and a heavy feeling in the legs. Advanced stages include skin discoloration, texture changes of the skin on the leg and potentially leading to open ulcers or sores. It’s no wonder that these things can take a toll on a person’s ability to maintain their normal daily activities! Varicose veins come in all sizes, from the tiny spider veins to large, rope-like bulging veins. Why does this happen? The primary cause of varicose veins is due to damage to the valves in the vein that results in a backward flow and pooling of the blood. This in turn increases pressure and causes the superficial veins to dilate. Sometimes the pressure of the blood in dilated veins causes fluid to leak from the vein which causes swelling. That could be quite uncomfortable or even painful! If not addressed, this could lead to thickening and discoloration of the skin and soft tissue and ultimately to skin ulcers around the ankles. 12 MOXIE! SUMMER/FALL 2015

What are the risk factors for varicose veins? They include female gender, age, heredity, pregnancy, a standing occupation or sedentary lifestyle, obesity, prior injury, blood clot or surgery. Crossing your legs is not a cause but wearing high heels is associated with Varicose Veins. Evaluation of varicose veins begins with a careful history and physical exam to identify any medical cause of the varicose veins. The mainstay of evaluation is a sophisticated painless and non-invasive ultrasound study that pinpoints the exact cause and location of the problem. This is usually done by an ultrasound technologist who is dedicated to vascular evaluations. Now what can be done about this? Traditionally the treatment for varicose veins has been very conservative, with most physicians prescribing compression stockings and telling their patients that they had to live with it. For the most severe cases, a vein stripping was done. Fortunately, as in all areas of medicine, technology has come to the rescue. Now there are several minimally invasive modalities to treat varicose veins including laser, radio frequency ablation and sclerotherapy with a variety of chemicals. Sclerotherapy is used to treat small spider veins in which a tiny needle is used. Several sessions are typically required for best results. An exciting option that is still on the horizon uses a modified “superglue” to close the vein. These procedures can be done under local anesthesia in the doctor’s office. Depending on the case there are even more options available which can also be performed in the office. Compression

...varicose veins are no longer considered to be just a cosmetic issue stockings are prescribed after all of these procedures for one to two weeks, but resumption of normal activities is generally within a day or two. Remember that varicose veins are no longer considered to be just a cosmetic issue. They can result in serious lifestyle and health consequences. The good news is that the evaluation and treatment of symptomatic varicose veins is covered by most insurance plans. Talk to your doctor if you think this may apply to you. your best energy by jill sharp & margaret polser

a bit of a stretch So you are on board! You believe that exercise is an important part of your overall health and wellness, and you have created rituals and habits that support that. You are doing aerobic training at least three times a week... (check!)…strength training each muscle group twice a week…(of course!)…and you are respecting your body’s need for muscle flexibility as an important part of a balanced and healthy fitness plan…..right?

T

he truth is, most of us leave stretching out of our daily routines. We get in a rush to get our workouts started, and as soon we finish, we are eager to get out the door, telling ourselves the “important” part is done, and we will stretch later. Only later doesn’t come, or come often enough. The result? Those muscles we are working hard to strengthen through exercise get tighter and tighter, decreasing our range of motion over time. Thus, increasing our risk for injury, and impairing our ability to see continued improvement in overall strength, fitness, and performance. Some things to consider as you incorporate flexibility training: 1. Never stretch cold muscles. Always warm up before any stretching. Research shows that stretching without warming up can diminish exercise performance and can cause increased injury risk. Five minutes is usually all that you need. Walking or light jogging are good options because they increase blood flow and elevate muscle temperature which makes collagen fibers more elastic and responsive. 2. Use the right stretching at the right time. Dynamic stretching can be a great tool immediately following your warm up. Slow controlled movements such as arm circles, hip rotations, and even flow yoga moves can loosen up any areas of tightness pre-workout and inISTOCKPHOTO/LOLOSTOCK

Michael S. Vrana, MD Orthopedic Surgery Fellowship Trained Sports Medicine crease synovial fluid for lubrication in the joints. Static stretching is reserved for post-workout. This is the opportunity to lengthen the muscles and work on gains in flexibility by addressing all of the major muscle groups in the body. In order to do so, it is important to hold each stretch for a minimum of 15-30 seconds. 3. Never stretch to pain. You should feel slight discomfort and intensity in flexibility training, but if you find yourself grimacing and struggling to find a steady breath, back off a bit. This is another great opportunity to practice listening to our bodies. 4. Stretch to relieve stress. The mind affects the body and the body affects the mind. They are inextricably connected. When emotional stress is present, our muscles contract, which is a very adaptive response to acute stress. It serves to create extra protection for the body. Over time, chronic stress and that constant muscle tension create problems in the form of stiff necks and achy backs. Gentle stretching paired with mindful breathing can reduce tightness.

5. Get a deep tissue massage. We knew you might like this one! The National Academy of Sports Medicine suggests that massage can improve muscle flexibility by priming a muscle to achieve an increase in muscle length during a stretch. Massage first, then stretch. Our bodies were built to move, and flexibility gives us the ability to move freely. So whether you are a weekend golfer, a distance runner, a home owner that enjoys working in the yard, or a mother carrying and loading small children, by giving 10-15 minutes a day to stretching and flexibility, you will make an investment in your body that will keep it responsive, adaptive, and energized for every way that you want to move.

SwimFit By Sonya Y. Reyna

You don’t have to be an Olympic swimmer to reap the rewards of water fitness. The summer heat is turned on HIGH and the best place to cool off and get a great workout is in the pool!

Aquatic exercise is fun and beneficial for people of all ages and abilities. You don’t have to be an Olympic swimmer to reap the rewards of water fitness. The most prevalent benefits to participants are weight loss, cardiovascular endurance, and strength building. Aquatic exercise provides a soft and safe environment for working out. The buoyancy of the water relieves your worry about feeling fatigued or pain. The water supports your body as it moves to keep it balanced, preventing an injury. Exercise in the water increases flexibility and enhances a wider range of motion. Pool workouts increase cardio endurance by increasing blood flow and allowing the heart rate to increase. This will gradually increase cardiovascular performance over time. Aquatic exercise not only burns fat, it allows the body to build muscle at a much faster pace. Water workouts are a great way to relieve stress. The warmer water temperature serves as a natural resource that massages the body and allows it to go in to a relaxed state. When the body gets to that calming state, it decreases any pain or soreness the individual may be experiencing. (Continued) ISTOCKPHOTO/CHUWY

Four Basic Exercises You Can Do In the Water

Seahorse: Straddle a noodle as if you were sitting on a seahorse. Pedal around the pool as fast as you can only using the upper body. Be sure to sit up tall, keep your back straight, roll back your shoulders, and remember not to hunch your back. This will engage your core muscles and keep you stable and balanced. Try to do this exercise for 3-5 minutes. Water Walking or Jogging with Swim Gloves: Be sure to be in water that is waist-high. Walk across the pool swinging your arms (opposite arm/opposite leg) in a forward motion. Keep your feet flat on the floor, back straight, and tighten your core muscles. Concentrate on not leaning too forward or to the side. Try to do this exercise 3-5 minutes. Bicep & Tricep Curl Exercises using Swim Gloves: – Be sure to be in waist-high body of water. Have your arms to your side, your palms facing up, and your elbows close to your body. Raise your forearms to the level of the water. Be sure to keep your elbows close to your body and your wrists straight. Switch direction and push your hands down until your arms are straight again. Repeat 2-3 sets of 8-10 reps or until you are fatigued. Bent Knee Leg Exercise Using a Noodle: Our focus in this specific exercise is to strengthen your leg muscles. Place your foot between the middle of the noodle. Stand with your back to the side of the pool in waist-high water, placing your arms on the edge of the pool or on hips for balance. Straighten your leg in front of you and slowly flex your knee to a 90- degree position. Return to the starting position and do 2-3 sets of 8-10 reps or until you are fatigued. When done be sure to switch to the other leg. Sonya Y. Reyna is the Assistant Programs Manager of Aquatics & Group Exercise at Resolute Wellness and Aquatics Center in New Braunfles

Everyone assumed that she would be a coach and teacher, like her dad.

M

any people dream of traveling to as many national parks as possible during their lifetime. Mardi Arce is not only living that dream, she has made a 30-year career of living in and protecting the United States’ most exceptional places. Mardi is the first female superintendent of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, which preserves four of San Antonio’s five Spanish frontier missions. The job is much like being a CEO: She oversees all aspects of the park, from maintenance to law enforcement, natural resource management, cultural resource management, and visitor services. She also partners with community stakeholders and the Catholic Archdiocese that still manages and preserves active churches within the old Missions. Mardi arrived in San Antonio in 2013 – just in time to see the park through the final stages of its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That six-year process culminated in July 2015 with UNESCO’s recommendation that the Missions become Texas’ first World Heritage Site – one of only 23 in the United States and 1,031 globally. “A World Heritage Site is like a national park for the world,” Mardi explains. “This brings us to the same level as wonderful international icons like the Taj Mahal, the Grand Canyon, and the Great Wall of China. There are people around the world who plan entire vacations around World Heritage Sites, so for international tourists, this is a big draw – and this status

Mardi Arce At Home in America’s Most Treasured Places BY KRISTY HURST helps us preserve these places longer and better.” As the National Park Service celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2016, Mardi is already planning special events to begin later this year, as well as a World Heritage Site celebration and concert planned for October 2015. From a Whim to a Career As committed as she is to the park service, Mardi jumped into her career “on a whim.” As a high school track athlete in Iowa, Mardi was on a group run during her junior year, when the coach asked each of the kids about their post-graduation plans. One said she wanted to be an architect, another an oceanographer, and another a sports therapist. “Everyone was saying all these cool things, and so when she got to me, I had to say something, and it just came out of my mouth that I was going to be a park ranger,” she recalls. Everyone, including Mardi, had assumed that she would be a coach and teacher, like her dad. That night at dinner, when Mardi laughingly told her moth-

er what she had said, her mom said, “Why couldn’t you?” Having experienced many national parks and historic sites on family vacations, she decided to find out more. Her school guidance counselor wrote to the National Park Service, which sent details about possible careers and relevant college degrees. One of them – history – happened to be one of Mardi’s passions, so she planned a college curriculum that would lead to her first summer job as a seasonal park ranger in 1984, leading campfire programs and hikes at Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve in Idaho. She was hooked. In the 30 years since, Mardi has traveled all over the country, serving at America’s most treasured sites and pursuing a fresh adventure every few years. The closest she ever worked to home was as a chief ranger in law enforcement at Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa, just five hours away from her family. But her career has also taken her as far afield as Washington, New York, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Missouri, Arkansas, and now, Texas. She has worked in visitor education and cultural resource preservation, and has trained and served as a law enforcement officer, museum curator, emergency medical technician, and wildland firefighter. She has rappelled off the rock walls of the Grand Canyon and Canyonlands National Park, and managed two national signature events for the Lewis and Clark bicentennial. Along the way, she has forged countless friendships and had many MOXIE! SUMMER/FALL 2015 25

funny moments, like the time at Craters of the Moon where a visitor asked for a map, then kept insisting that they were in Wyoming after she handed him a map of where they really were – Idaho. “I had a great supervisor in the Park Service, and he said, ‘The American public, when they go on vacation, leaves their brain at home. When they come to a park, they are in a situation that is foreign to them. You are going to be astounded by what they say and do, and you will wonder how can they make it through life. You have to help them.’” Nearly half the parks she’s worked in have had female superintendents, and while some park service professions tend to be male-dominated, more and more women are pursuing those careers.

“When I went to law enforcement training in the late 90s, out of 30 trainees, there were seven or eight women,” she says. “Now, the numbers are better. When I was a chief ranger and went to a chief rangers conference, I really had the realization that it’s a whole bunch of guys. But in other areas, such as interpretation, there are lots of women.” Focus on Family Some of her fondest memories were forged at Fire Island National Seashore in New York, where she gave tours, exercised horses on the beach, and met her late husband, Michael. A seasonal Park Service employee, he was a volunteer, and she was a volunteer coordinator. While both pursued their park service careers, they spent years at assignments in separate parks, seeing each other only on weekends.

she and Michael started their family through international adoption from Russia. Mardi is now raising their two children, Erin, 11, and Nicholas, 9, on her own, after Michael, a cancer survivor, passed away in February 2015. He had been a stay-at-home dad for the last 10 years, so everyone in the family is adjusting to a new normal as they settle in for a long stay in San Antonio. Mardi now understands why so many of her park service friends stopped moving around so much once they had kids. “I remember thinking, ‘I can’t believe how they are sacrificing their careers for that,’” she says. “Now, I think, ‘Why would I move my kids?’” Staying put gives her more time to make a positive impact on the Missions. She has added a park ranger focused on outreach and is piloting

an Urban Ranger program this summer that will send four young rangers into the community through San Antonio Parks and Recreation, reaching 6,000 children who might not otherwise learn about the Missions and national parks. “If we haven’t connected with the youth,” she asks, “who will be the next generation of park rangers who will preserve these places?” Mardi thinks back to her own national park vacations with her family, and knows that those early experiences led her to where she is today: deeply engaged with our public lands, and preserving these cherished places for all those who dream of visiting them. Tricks of the Trade By Annie Mozely

Follow these helpful tips to continue the benefits of massage therapy in between appointments. 1- HYDRATION Drinking water before and after a massage session helps to release the toxins that settle in our muscles causing muscle tightness and spasms. When toxins build up within your muscle tissues, you feel sluggish and your muscles become dehydrated and nutrient deprived. Massage therapy breaks apart or separates tight muscle tissue, then the water releases the waste out of the body. Drinking water helps with headaches, hunger, general hydration, organ health and weight loss. You should consume at least half of your body weight in ounces daily. So, a 150 pound adult should consume 75 ounces of water per day. 2- STRETCHING Stretching is the unsung hero of exercise that keeps your muscles flexible, free from injury and pain. When combined with regular massage, these two activities support your body, post-workout, to release accumulated lactic acid that may cause muscle soreness and release any tension that is being held in your muscles. Stretching also increases flexibility and range of motion in your joints and muscles. 3- ICE AND HEAT THERAPY The most common question I am asked by clients is “What’s better, ice or heat?” Ice therapy, or cryotherapy, is primarily used to reduce inflammation and 28 MOXIE! SUMMER/FALL 2015

decrease pain. Applying cold to an injury causes small vessels to constrict, limiting the amount of inflammation that builds up in the area. Cold therapy is also an analgesic. The numbing effect of icing an injury can help relieve some of the immediate, irritating pain. Cold therapy helps to speed up the recovery process. Heat therapy causes the vessels to open up and increases circulation to the area. This is more commonly used in cases of chronic injury, muscle tightness and to warm up an area before activity. Heat also has analgesic effects, which is why people love the whirlpool, steam baths and hot tubs. Both treatments have benefits to the muscles. Ice should be applied on chronic or acute injuries after activity or massage and heat should be applied on chronic injuries before activity or during massage.

between massage appointments works the muscles and tendons, making them more at ease and less tight. When slowly rolling the spine against a foam roller, it allows the joints and tissue to stretch out and loosen the trigger points releasing the lower back muscles. Clients with hip or knee issues can roll out their IT band lengthening the fascia, reducing pain and increasing flexibility in the hips.

6. ARNICA AND/OR TOPICAL ANALGESIC CREAMS Arnica is a plant and is used externally for arthritis, burns, ulcers, eczema and acne. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities that can reduce pain and swelling, improving wound healing. While arnica provides long term benefits for the body, topical analgesic creams, oils and lotions can provide temporary pain relief from injury. My favorite topical analgesic is Sombra Warm Therapy Pain Relief Gel. Chic Shots! Some girls just ooze great style, and you want to know how they do it…where they shop, who does their hair, where do they get that great sense of style. We want to know too, so we’re getting answers! We’ll feature a new “victim” in each issue of Moxie!

SUSAN SLOVAK Owner Blue Artichoke Boutique New Braunfels, Texas 1. How would you define your style? For the lack of a better category, Flirty! I love to dress very feminine, a lot of dresses, almost always in heels, hair somewhat fixed, makeup...and I love jewelry! My mother made us dress up, even if we went to the grocery store, so it’s really her fault! 2. When shopping for your own clothes, what is important to you? I sit in so many showrooms and am fortunate to see what’s going to be the hottest color, shape, hemline, etc for the next season. When I pick for my store or for myself, I choose great colors, not a lot of black, real statement pieces...and not necessarily what’s the latest trend. I think a woman should feel feminine and confident everyday, so trendy isn’t always key. I also like clothes that tend to be more figure flattering than oversized, although I definitely have both. I want quality because I’m going to wear my stuff for a few years, not just one season and I always, always, always search for clothing manufactured in the U.S.A.!

3. What are the three most important items in your closet? I bought a one-shoulder red dress a few years ago in a little boutique in New York City, it’s my go-to for all kinds of events. I’m taking it back to NYC in a few weeks for my birthday, it’s already packed! I have a pair of snakeskin strappy heels that seem to match everything ...and I have a $2.00 pair of jeans from a garage sale that love me through thick and thin and therefore, they stay forever! 4. “I never leave home without...” At least one of three dogs, about 20 tubes of lipstick, a Garage Dust bracelet, a rubber band for my hair and an extra pair of heels! We do a lot of girls nights around here...:) MOXIE! SUMMER/FALL 2015 33

Liberty 61 Minimalist Style, with a Beautiful Purpose Written by Kristy Hurst Photos by Pauline Stevens

E

very woman needs at least one special item of clothing in her closet. The one that makes her feel good as soon as she slips it on. The one that always feels comfortable and flattering. The one that looks as good with heels at dinner, as it does with flip-flops at HEB and cowboy boots at Gruene Hall. New Braunfels-based Liberty 61 clothing is all of these things, and there’s something else that’s extra-special about this line: The name Liberty 61 comes from Isaiah 61, a Bible verse about helping others who are less fortunate. With a special place in her heart for mission work, the line’s designer and founder, Kass Carrell, donates a portion of every purchase to Commission To Every Nation (www. cten.org). This Kerrville-based organization, started by her friend and former pastor, provides funding to assist missionaries in the field. “These missionaries work with people on the ground and know their needs,” Kass says. “It’s great to know these missionaries and read their stories and visit them, to learn where people are helping, and to know where the money is going and how it will help people.” A Minimalist Aesthetic Liberty 61 is a dream fulfilled for Kass, who believes that most women are like her: They would rather have one perfect dress in their closet than 10 dresses that are less than fabulous and spend

most of their time on hangers. “My motto is ‘keep it simple.’ I’d rather buy better quality and have less in my closet, but have things I will wear over and over that will last a long time,” Kass

timeless, not trendy... says. “When my wardrobe is simple, comfortable and easy, I feel more free to go and do the other, more important things in life. The pieces I design are timeless, not trendy. I make things that will look good next year and the year after, and the year after that, that can be worn in every season and create a look that can totally change with different accessories.” MOXIE! SUMMER/FALL 2015 35

This “less is more” philosophy is why Kass chooses only the finest-quality, organic, luxuriously soft and durable bamboo and linen. It’s why she spent months at her own sewing machine, testing different designs and details to find the ones that would flatter every body type. And it’s why she carefully selected American pattern makers and manufacturers, and why she took the time to get to know the employees whose skilled hands replicate her designs down to the last detail.

“My whole clothing line is about functionality, and it’s a Texas Americana look...” “I went to a fabric and trim show in Los Angeles, and when I touched this bamboo I said, ‘Oh my goodness,’” Kass recalls. “It is more expensive than a lot of other fabrics, but I knew that I could make something that would stand the test of time, and I had to stay true to how I felt about my goal. It will cost a bit more, but will last much longer.” The line currently consists of four pieces in neutral colors: a stunning bamboo and linen Ruffle Front Dress, a soft bamboo Liberty Wom36 MOXIE! en’s tee, the cool and casual Linen Front Top, and a bamboo Unisex Liberty tee. Right now, Liberty 61 is available online at www.liberty61. com and at LeeLee at the Pearl in San Antonio, and Kass is making connections to get the new line onto more boutique racks across Texas and the nation. “My whole clothing line is about functionality, and it’s a Texas Americana look,” Kass says. “Everything has pockets. I have younger girls wearing them, and older women really love them, too. I make clothing that feels very flattering, where you don’t feel like you have to suck in to look good.” Because each piece takes a full year to go from her sketchpad into buyers’ hands, she’s now designing next year’s line to expand on existing pieces, with graphic t-shirts and long-sleeve cowl hoodies in the works. “I’m having fun getting ideas onto the drawing board,” she says. “I want to make some t-shirt graphics that

are New Braunfels-style and that tie met while studying Spanish in Costa into our heritage here.” Rica, helping her go to sewing school and start her own business making From Hard Times to Dream Fulfilled wedding dresses. WINDFALL! Most of us dream of hitting the Lottery, or at least winning the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes…but a windfall can come to you unexpectedly, and it’s a wonderful thing! There are many emotions surrounding money.

Do You Have a Will? If the windfall is substantial, now is the time to write a will. You can do this on the web if your situation is straightforward. If you have children from multiple marriages, find a reputable lawyer. Ask your accountant for a recommendation.

Paint The Town Teal! …or at least paint your toes!

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and we want to get the conversation started! Ovarian Cancer is a sneaky disease and claims the lives of more than 14,000 women each year. In addition, approximately 22,000 new cases will be diagnosed in 2015. During the month of September, paint your toenails teal, the ovarian cancer color. Get your friends to paint their toenails teal too, and when they ask about it, make sure they know the signs of this whispering killer. Early detection is key to a positive outcome! Visit a participating salon in your area. These salons have beautiful polish ready for you, may offer discounts on your service, and/or donate a portion of the proceeds to cancer research. You will also receive a handy card to carry in your wallet that lists the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Your toes (and fingers!) will be so happy!

(4.) If you already have an IRA, you may want to convert some or all of it to a Roth. This will require you to pay income on the amount you convert. The amount you convert will be considered income so you need to “fit within the limits above. You can use your windfall to pay your taxes on the conversion. Repeat the conversion each year. Try to transfer over as much of your IRA as possible. Be sure to discuss these options with an accountant to verify that it makes sense for your individual situation. Also, print out IRS publication 590 to check specific rules for everything. It is available at www.irs.gov. If the windfall is in the form of an inherited IRA, do not merge it with your existing IRA. It must be kept separate. Education Accounts Consider setting up education accounts for children and/or grandchildren. Set up 529 accounts at Fidelity Investments or Vanguard. Call them. They will walk you through the process. Investments Complete the above steps. If your remaining windfall is in excess of $500,000, sit down with a Chartered Financial Analyst or a Certified Financial Planner. Verify that they have a fiduciary duty to you. You want an advisor who will recommend the best products for you instead of only the products they are being paid by someone else to sell. Most of all, enjoy your windfall and the financial peace it brings!

40 MOXIE! SUMMER/FALL 2015

Here are the steps you should use to maximize the financial benefit of your windfall. First, use it to stop paying other people money for the use of their money. In other words, pay down your debts. Second, save for the future via tax advantaged retirement plans like 401ks, IRAs, etc. Third, invest any remaining windfall in stocks, bonds or mutual funds. Either learn the ins and outs of the markets yourself or pay a professional for objective advice.

As I was growing up, my mother had lots of advice about the man I should marry.

Band Widow By Georgia Williams

Her first choice was that I should marry a military man. “It’s a great way of life!” she’d assure me. “You’ll get to see the world. And you get free medical and dental care, and discounts on shopping at the commissary and PX!” Second on her list was a doctor. “You’ll never have to worry about money,” she explained. I gave her advice some thought…for about two seconds! I knew that both of these careers required a husband to be away from home way too often. That didn’t sound like much fun to me. I wanted a husband to share life with me and raise a family together. So I did the most reasonable thing, I fell in love with a musician.

I

t couldn’t be helped. I took one look at him coming through the doors of the Pizza Hut where I worked, and I was hooked. He came in after a gig on a Saturday night, all long blonde hair, wrangler jacket and skinny jeans of him. At lunchtime the next day, he was back again. This time in a corduroy sports jacket and khaki pants. He played guitar for the worship service at our local Catholic church. It was a done deal. This was the man I was going to marry! It was fun being the wife of a musician. Early in our marriage, I was a faithful band groupie. I went to all of his gigs. I got to carry his guitar case into the clubs, spend the evening enjoying the music and then count the tips at the end of the night. I was the wife of a rock and roll star! And then the babies started coming. By the end of my first pregnancy, I couldn’t keep up with musician’s hours. Once the baby came, I was thoroughly content to stay home and play house. My rock star and I agreed that no matter what opportunities came along, he was not going to be a traveling musician. It was stressful enough to have him gone most weekend nights and I resigned myself to being a weekend band widow for most of our marriage. Over the years, my music man tried several times to put his guitar away, but music was in his soul and he had to play. In time, I became accustomed to our routine, and even began to enjoy a little “me” time while he was out. When I could, I went to watch him perform. I loved sharing that part of his life with him. The kids grew up watching their dad play music. Now grown, all five of them have a true appreciation for music, and a couple of them perform in their own bands. Music is our sport. Watching my son play an incredible lick on his guitar is no different from watching him make the winning touchdown! It’s been nearly 40 years now, and my rock star is still playing his music. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. My marital advice to my girls? Marry a musician…it’s a great way of life!
