Our glorious cathedral is the jewel in the city’s crown. In 2018 the cathedral and city will join together to celebrate the 900th anniversary of this magnificent place. Visiting is a truly special experience of beautiful grounds and majestic architecture. With a new Visitor Centre, tours, musical events and festivals, the cathedral is a great place to visit all year round. A look around the Visitor Centre, which was recently opened by historian and broadcaster Dr David Starkey, is the perfect complement to a visit to the cathedral. Its free exhibition helps you to discover some of the characters and stories from the cathedral’s amazing 1300-year history.
heritage city It has a timeline showing priceless artefacts from Anglo-Saxon times to the present day, as well as hands-on exhibits, a digital touch-table and an audio presentation for those of you who prefer to listen rather than to look. Amongst the priceless artefacts on show are the original letter from King James I, written in 1613, requiring the mortal remains of his mother, Mary Queen of Scots, to be removed from Peterborough to Westminster Abbey. Also on show is the actual Deed of Endowment by which King Henry VIII changed Peterborough Abbey into a Cathedral on the creation of the Diocese of Peterborough in 1541.
“
Passion for Peterborough I had friends visit from Australia and took them to the cathedral. I forgot what a magnificent building we have on our doorstep! We have visited many cathedrals in many countries and Peterborough still stands out as one of the best . Sheila, Trip Advisor

Cathedral Square is the cosmopolitan heartbeat of the city. It’s a true blend of heritage and modern, a city square where you can sit outside cafés and restaurants and watch events, listen to music or just unwind and people watch to your heart’s content.
The square’s centerpiece is the majestic Guildhall. It stands boldly above all the shopping hustle and bustle and it’s a landmark that is unmistakably Peterborough. Cathedral Square leads to tree-lined walkways through the rest of the city’s dining and retail offering, which includes two shopping centres. At either end of the immediate city centre you’ll find places to relax and picnic at the city’s award-winning Central Park and walking and cycling routes along the River Nene. 6

It’s my favourite place in the city centre. You can admire the beauty of the cathedral, Guildhall and St John’s all at once. Cathedral Square has been a meeting place for hundreds of years and you can really appreciate the history of it all. There are nearly always performances or events going on too. A superb experience awaits at the beautifully restored Peterborough Museum and City Gallery. It houses more than 200,000 items with key specimens of national and international importance. Guided tours of the museum are available for individuals or groups. Tours last about 90 minutes and cover the major items on display, the history of the museum building - and can sometimes include a look behind the scenes. Groups can also book to visit the museum in the evenings to explore the galleries exclusively. Refreshments can also be provided by the museum’s Squires Coffee House.

Peterborough is a unique place historically, with an unbroken story of people making their lives here stretching back for more than 3,500 years. It has an incredible set of treasure be it our Bronze Age site at Flag Fen, Norman cathedral, medieval paintings at Longthorpe, the Elizabethan splendor of Burghley, the international treasures in the city’s museum or our railway heritage. The Sacrewell Farm and Activity Centre has been in existence for more than 50 years and in 2015 the 18th century Sacrewell watermill was restored to its former glory thanks to a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. The restoration has made it a national centre for milling excellence and has boosted the educational facilities already in place. Sacrewell is an attraction steeped in history and is a fascinating visit for the whole family. You’ll meet Shire horses and other friendly animals plus there are tractor rides and farm trails to entertain the children. Enter one of the UK’s fastest half marathons!
In 2016 the Perkins Great Eastern Run had the highest turnout of runners in the race’s history. A total of 4,262 runners ran the half marathon and 1,257 people took part in the Anna’s Hope Fun Run. The event had the strongest ever representation from elite runners and there were six wheelchair entries. Runners came from all over the UK and, indeed, the world, with entries from USA, the Netherlands, Italy and France. At one stage during the event more than 10,000 people were on The Embankment as runners crossed the finish line to cheers from a huge number of supporters and spectators. Unlike many UK half marathons, the Perkins Great Eastern Run takes in plenty of sights along the way, starting and finishing in the heart of historic Peterborough. It offers a fast, flat couse giving runners an excellent chance of a personal best. The race is lined throughout with supporters, giving runners lots of encouragement and support. Runners also welcome the high-quality goody bags that are given out at the finish line, which include a technical t-shirt, a commemorative medal and other running-related treats.
There’s entertainment and a funfair on the day at Peterborough’s River Nene Embankment, where the half marathon starts at 10.30am. This year’s race is on 8 October and organisers Peterborough City Council are gearing up for another bumper year. To enter, visit:

Passion for Peterborough As I grew up in Peterborough, sport became an important part of my life and drove me on to all of my achievements. I’m proud of my city and the sporting achievements associated with it. The Perkins Great Eastern Run for example, is a major event that attracts thousands of participants who are all at different levels of running and fitness. It’s open to everyone and is one of the best half marathons in the country. Louis Smith, Olympic medals winner

Passion for Peterborough Sacrewell Farm: We had an absolutely fabulous time. From pond dipping to pony grooming and tractor rides there’s definitely something for everyone. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and I can’t wait to return at Halloween and Christmas, as I’ve heard they put on quite a show. Em2104, Trip Advisor (Map 2/30)

When it’s school holiday time there are excellent attractions that’ll provide all the activity children will need to keep them entertained. Sacrewell Farm is a multiaward winning heritage farm attraction and 18th century watermill nestled between Peterborough and Stamford. Part of the William Scott Abbott Trust, which was founded in 1964 to provide an agricultural education for all, the centre is an ideal place for children to see animals, run around in beautiful countryside and let off steam in a state-of-the-art Playbarn. There are more outdoor activities on offer at Railworld Wildlife Haven where you can explore the rich biodiversity alongside an incredible model railway. Bring a picnic too and then head to the Nene Valley Railway, home to a well-known little blue engine named Thomas.
“
Passion for Peterborough Nene Valley Railway: I have taken my grandchildren and their friends on several occasions. It’s always a lovely day out, sometimes we’d pop into Wansford station for a drink and a piece of cake and use the play area. Other times we’d take a train and jump off at Ferry Meadows and feed the ducks. Ann Wight-Boycott, resident (Map 2/7)
”
Built in 1947, Thomas spent his entire working life at the British Sugar Corporation Peterborough factory pushing wagons of sugar beet up an incline until the day came when a diesel engine replaced his steam power. The Peterborough Railway Society purchased him in 1973 and he was moved to the Nene Valley Railway, where he has since delighted his friends and children of all ages. 39

Passion for Peterborough
As well as three theatres there’s a growing arts community focus in the city. The Peterborough Arts Festival, street theatre, artists’ open studios, Art in the Heart, the art galleries at the museum and the arts cinema have all created a huge following. Then there’s the cathedral and St John’s Church, which both stage exhibitions and music. The music festivals and venues for concerts and bands are all growing too.
