Meet the artists
The 2016 PECT Green Festival has been awarded funding from Arts Council England. This support has enabled us to commission artists to create innovative artworks for the Festival – whether it’s street theatre, visual art or spoken word – to promote sustainable living and encourage people to take positive actions for their local and global environment.
Cross Pollination By Phillippa Phillips and Vikki Harold
Working from different perspectives that meet in the middle, local artists Phillippa and Vikki are collaborating in this fun and interactive recycled art project. See their display at the Festival Launch Day and take part in workshops to create flowers and seed bombs.
Vikki’s ‘Bee&Bee’ is made from reclaimed items, creating an urban, beefriendly environment, while Phillippa – with the help of local Rainbow, Brownie and Guide groups – has created a meadow of flowers using found litter. Biog: Phillippa has a Phoenixlike approach to her work of transforming recycled and discarded materials into art. Vikki Harold has a diverse arts and crafts background and uses this to lead workshops and create confidence through art.
It’s Not Your Fault
By Jay Gearing Jay is creating several pieces of art challenging irresponsible corporations and rampant consumerism as the main causes of climate change. The pieces take influence from advertisements and subvert the message that is continually sold to people, encouraging them to consume more and more products. The artwork will be on display in the city centre throughout Festival week. Biog: Jay uses Photoshop as his main artistic medium and has more than 15 years’ experience working in the creative industry. Jay co-founded Paper Rhino, a creative design co-op for ethically-conscious organisations and charities. Jay has also been on the board of trustees for Peterborough’s community garden The Green Backyard for three years.
“If there are no bees, there are no flowers. No flowers? Then there’s only litter!” - Phillippa & Vikki 4

Trees of life
By Douglas Thompson
High Water Mark By Jacqui Jones
This year, Travelchoice has also commissioned an artist for the Festival, extending the range of activities being put on display. Jacqui Jones will be creating a series of installations near the River Nene in the city centre which will be on display from 13th – 21st August. She will place origami style boats above current water levels to highlight the impact of climate change and the potential future sea level rises that may affect the region. The artworks will form a trail alongside the river that the public can follow on foot, bike or boat, raising awareness of the walking and cycling routes that are available in this beautiful part of the city. See how many boats you can spot! Biog: Jacqui Jones is an established graduate artist with a proven track record creating commissioned public artworks, producing gallery exhibitions and designing creative workshops. “I strive to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, enabling people to view their environment in new ways.” - Jacqui
Fine artist and performer Douglas Thompson returns to his home town with giant paper collage artwork displays, story-telling performances and a ‘tree of promises’.
You’ll be able to see six works of art inspired by local trees. Giant paper-cut collages of oaks, beech and willow will be brought to life by story-telling tree spirit performers and there will be an invitation to participate by adding a leaf to the ‘tree of promises’. Biog: Douglas is passionate about Peterborough: “If it wasn’t for the support I received from Peterborough Regional College, Mask Theatre, and the Key Youth Theatre I wouldn’t be practicing as an artist today.” “I want us to see and be amazed by the beauty of the natural world that surrounds us. We need to re-amaze and reacquaint ourselves with nature – especially since we are very much in danger of losing so much of it.” - Douglas

Lucanus cervus By Janet Bates
The stag beetle is a spectacular looking invertebrate and one of the UK’s largest land beetles. Sadly, this amazing species is endangered, mainly through habitat loss. ‘Lucanus cervus’ is a sculpture of the male stag beetle, constructed from recycled materials and paper mâché. Its huge size, some 3 metres in length, represents the enormous loss if this beetle were to become extinct. There is a surprise inside... take a look. Biog: Influenced by the way museums have traditionally classified and displayed objects, Janet’s work investigates how these approaches shape our perception and understanding.

Future Floodlands By James Tovey
Future Floodlands invites you to explore the distinct possibility of a future flooded Peterborough. Combining live theatre and poetry, light projections, artwork and sculpture, this is an engaging installation and completely immersive event. The pieces are written and performed by budding writers from the city’s schools, alongside established playwrights and poets from Peterborough and beyond. Led by their words, come on a journey into a

parallel world, and imagine a time to come. Activities throughout the launch day. This installation by James Tovey has been produced for the event in collaboration with Eastern Angles Theatre Company and visual artists Luke Payn and John Elson. Biog: James Tovey’s interests are art, land art, sculpture and boats. He runs a company specializing in traditional boatbuilding and repairs and was a prizewinner in Classic Boat’s eco-fishing boat design competition 2010. His paintings have been exhibited at the RWA and RA and this year the Peterborough Open. “Thrashing waves build and lands drown, when the tides surge over.”
