Welcome to the iiE Awards 2019! It’s been another exciting year of growing sustainable business in the East Region! We are delighted you have joined us for our 9th iiE Awards to celebrate some truly fantastic achievements. Our businesses are actively responding to the global climate and pollution crisis with results that have been nationally recognised by the Department of Business & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). We have been thrilled to see our accreditation framework used as a basis for innovation and practices that rethink how resources are used in the first place. Our new iiE Mentor programme has seen some fantastic connections between businesses, from CPD sustainability training sessions, knowledge sharing, and member-to-member networking. I’ve been privileged to witness first-hand staff understanding of how individual actions can cause collective impact from such a variety of business sectors. I’m continually learning what is possible through some creative thinking and with the will to put a plan into action! This year we have seen more people getting involved than ever, with members dedicating thousands of hours to supporting their communities – a key element of sustainability. It’s time to stay motivated, keep striving, and keep challenging the status quo. We look forward to seeing what you can achieve!

About Investors in the Environment Investors in the Environment (iiE) is a national environmental accreditation scheme. It is designed to help organisations save money, reduce their impact on the environment, and get promoted for their green credentials. We provide all the help, support, and networking you need to make your organisation greener and ensure you get recognition for your eco initiatives. The iiE scheme is unique because organisations must achieve a minimum 2% improvement in resource efficiency over an agreed baseline figure, to secure green accreditation. Other criteria include having a recycling system in place, adopting a travel plan, calculating your organisational carbon footprint and setting targets for carbon reduction.
By ultimately putting together a comprehensive Environmental Management System (EMS), the scheme allows organisations to: •S ave money and increase profits •R aise their corporate profile • I ncrease competitiveness and market share • I nvolve staff in securing operational efficiencies Ultimately we want to empower organisations from the inside, and we work with staff and their nominated ‘green champions’ to create meaningful change in the workplace.
In 2019 our region’s businesses saved a staggering
3,500
tonnes of CO2 the equivalent to taking 102 cars off the road
Choose a building with green credentials to host your next meeting. The Allia Future Business Centre Peterborough is built and run with the environment in mind. From our rooftop rain water harvesting system, to the fairtrade items in our onsite cafÊ, we care about our environmental footprint and are committed to sustainable practices. How can your organisation achieve more with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)? CSR can drive team engagement, motivate staff, and make a real difference for people and places. Tree planting is recognised as one of the most environmentally-friendly activities that people can take part in to better the planet. Trees provide a multitude of benefits. They remove and store carbon from the atmosphere, reduce the risk of flooding, enhance air quality and provide shade. Trees greatly benefit the people living around them by having a positive impact on mental health and well-being too. In addition to offering planting days with PECT’s Forest for Peterborough project, iiE is now also partnering with Forest Carbon. If your business would like to measure, reduce and mitigate its carbon and environmental footprint then Forest Carbon will enable you to do this in an independently assured and innovative way, with multiple co-benefits for society. To find out more about offsetting your carbon footprint and contributing to long-term tree planting in the UK, email info@iie.uk.com
PECT – Creating Sustainable Places iiE was founded in 2010 by the independent charity PECT, not only to help organisations reduce their environmental impacts but also to give them the extra support needed to meet their green targets. Globally we are using more resources than the planet can renew each year. This means that we are emitting more carbon than the oceans and forests can absorb, we are catching more fish, felling more trees, harvesting more, and consuming more water than the Earth is able to produce in the same period. Things urgently need to change in order to protect our natural environment and enjoy a better quality of life for ourselves, our families and future generations. PECT aims to play a part in tackling these issues through delivering projects of local, regional and national significance. We work with communities, schools, businesses and voluntary organisations to deliver projects that make a real difference to the environment and people’s lives. Take the Cool Food Challenge! Did you know that small changes to your diet can make a giant impact on the planet? Food accounts for around a fifth of our carbon footprint. By making small changes, we can make big reductions and help to slow down the rate of climate change. The Cool Food revolution aims to help at least 1,300 households in the UK and France to make a 20% reduction in their carbon emissions over the course of two years. Cool Food takes an integrated, innovative approach by encouraging people to commit to small changes, and then calculating the impact of the carbon and financial savings of individual and collective Cool Food actions. This is a Franco-British project created under the INTERREG FRANCE (CHANNEL) ENGLAND PROGRAMME to support the transition to a low-carbon economy. Visit www.coolfood.net or call 01733 568408 to arrange the team to come to your offices and help your staff take the Cool Food challenge!

End workplace reliance on single-use plastic The last year has seen a massive surge in awareness around reducing the amount of single-use plastic we waste every day. With global recycling markets in chaos, and few plastics being recycled, now is the time to start phasing out reliance on unnecessary plastic that we often only use once before it's thrown in the bin. iiE wants to help you continue to tackle this issue by raising awareness of the amount of disposable plastic used in the workplace and home. iiE is offering all of its members access to digital resources and posters to raise the profile of the issue in your workplace. As an iiE member, it’s free for you to download the materials in your chosen format. You can then display these posters on staff notice boards or include them in internal communications. If you haven’t received your poster link yet, please email info@iie.uk.com This is just the first in a series of campaigns, so keep your eye out for more to follow!
LEADING THE WAY
in sustainable practices for vets
Davies Veterinary Specialists is the first veterinary practice to have achieved accreditation from Investors in the Environment (iiE). Since achieving our silver accreditation in August 2018, we’ve taken further steps to improve our environmental sustainability and shared the experience and knowledge we’ve gained so far by running Sustainability CPD events and providing informative resources for other veterinary practices. Our aim is not just to improve our own sustainability; we also want to help other veterinary practices improve their environmental and social sustainability, so together we can all adopt a more sustainable way of working. For more information, please contact Ellie West (DVS Sustainability Lead) on
ellie.west@vetspecialists.co.uk To find out more about why the iiE accreditation and sustainability is so important to us, visit
