1. Mentoring Program 2021 How the pandemic has affected the program – again Our 2021 has been fully compromised by the pandemic – again which is unfortunately a common situation now with all cultural institutions. We tried to overcome all the obstacles and tried to maintain an artistic activity with partners, musicians, mentees. We had one full, in person masterclass as planned. All the other programs were shortened, made online or completely cancelled. We still not know how long it will last and when all the programs can be resumed as normal. For example we were planning a masterclass with Ars Nova Ensemble for March 2021 but it had to be cancelled for the second time and postponed to June 2022. The good thing is that we could reschedule this program so it can be organised at a later date. However we could not reschedule any of the cancelled mentoring concerts unfortunately as the partner orchestras were also suffering the covid difficulties so we have two mentoring concerts in the waiting: Mikel Urquiza and Rémi Durupt, Boon Hua Lien and Donghoon Shin. During this difficult year the foundation tried to stay present, share online tutorials, concerts of previous masterclasses and promote online events of the mentees and of professors Peter Eötvös and Gregory Vajda. Our professors also gave private classes online to the mentees whenever it was needed, before important concerts, projects or before a mentoring concert. We could have one mentoring concert and it was for Holly Hyun Choe with Danubia Orchestra Óbuda at Müpa – Palace of Arts Budapest with piano soloist József Balog and with a pieces by composer mentee Donghoon Shin. Both Peter Eötvös and Gregory Vajda attended the rehearsals several times and worked with Holly Hyun Choe on her concert program. We had limited audience in the hall but the concert has been a great experience, recorded also by Müpa. Our next project will happen in 2022 in April when conductor Joanna Slusarczyk and composer Leonardo Marino will have their mentoring concerts feat. Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2021 we established additional partnerships with Philharmonic Orchestra Győr and Savaria Orchestra, they will both host mentoring concerts in 2023. We continue our partnership with Danubia Orchestra and Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra, too. Looking forward to give the chance of an orchestra concert to all of our mentees. We hope to be able to have kept our audience and our followers so when we can begin working as usual it will not take long to have talented participants to our

-2-

masterclasses. We also experienced an increase in applications so it seems that young talents are eager to get back to work again but it is always a shame when we have to cancel a masterclass like the one with Ars Nova Ensemble which already had applicants, too. Fortunately our home, the Budapest Music Center stayed stable again in 2021 and they also provide us stability and constant support which can guarantee the continuation of our programs. We also find stability with the support of the National Cultural Fund and Liszt Festival / Müpa, these are our main and most important partners after the great support of Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne. 2. Masterclass with György Kurtág / in person and online masterclass (hybride) Budapest Music Center celebrated György Kurtág's 95th birthday with a four-day online festival. The opening event was organized in cooperation with the Peter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation. The concert introduced the mentored composers and conductors participating in the Foundation's masterclass, while the professors, Peter Eötvös and Gregory Vajda also made an appeareance as conductors, celebrating the life and works of György Kurtág. The concert has been live streamed but unfortunately because of performance rights the recording is no longer available. Before the concert the foundation organised a masterclass 12-18 February 2021 around the program of the concert. This had to be restricted only to our conductor mentees, no other participants nor the composers mentees were allowed to join because of the ongoing pandemic. It has been really a miracle that we could host 3 singers from abroad in these cicumstanses. Our composer mentees could join the rehearsals online and also they could follow the concert online. The process has been very special as the professors and mentees worked and performed together. We had the privilege to be supervised by Maestro Kurtág who came to rehearsals several times and followed the concert live. Even if the conductions have been challenging, it has been an uplifting project which gave a lot of experience to the young conductors for the professional life. They could even follow the process of the preparations for a multi-camera livestream, without audience, so the BMC concert hall served as a television studio. They had to knew about the lights, camera men, all sorts of practicalities on top of the full knowledge of the very hard, challenging pieces.

3. European Creative Academy, Annecy, France In August 2021 we began our 3 year partnership with European Creative Academy and Ars Nova Ensemble. The partnership idea started in 2019 when our program director, Gregory Vajda visited Annecy. We wanted to begin in 2020 but the pandemic got in the way and only online activity was possible. Even in these circumstances the musicians of Ars Nova Ensemble recorded a piece by our mentee composer Mikel Urquiza and we agreed to continue in 2021. The scheme is a joint workshop where our mentess can take part, the academy invites a living composer and Peter Eötvös, Gregory Vajda work as professors. At the end of each project a concert is organised within the frame of Impérial Festival Annecy which is a great summer event. In 2021 we had our mentee conductor Jonas Bürgin and mentee conductor Rémi Durupt there, pieces by Peter Eötvös to work on. As the Annecy workshop is also for composers, Peter Eötvös had private consultations with young composers there. 4. Opera visit and rehearsals in Berlin / Sleepless by Peter Eötvös Sleepless, the new opera by Peter Eötvös has been premiered at Staatsoper Berlin and before the world premiere our mentees of 2021 could join the rehearsals and inbetween rehearsals they could work with Maestro Eötvös on other projects and conducting and composing skills. Our partners at Collegium Hungaricum Berlin have organised a talk about Sleeples at CHB Berlin and our mentees, Martin Rajna, Jonas Bürgin, Francisco Domínguez, Balázs Kecskés D. could take part to learn more about opera composing and performing, and they also had the opportunity to know more about these institution such as the Staatsoper Berlin and the Collegium Hungaricum. 5. Masterclass with Georges Aperghis / in person masterclass The foundation announced a workshop for conductors and composers focusing on chamber music between 4-9 October 2021, in Budapest (Hungary). Selected active conductors had the possibility to work on a double bass ensemble piece by Peter Eötvös and Migrants by Geroges Aperghis.

We were lucky to have been able to welcome Maestro Aperghis at Budapest Music Center – in person. There was a big interest towards the course but we had to fill the places with the young conductors who were selected as active conductors for the George Benjamin masterclass back in 2020 which became an online masterclass at the end. This is also a miracle that these young condutors have just waited one whole year to come to Budapest to learn contemporary music. We could also give a possiblity in plus for Joanna Slusarczyk, conductor mentee of 2020 to take part as covid cut short their mentoring period. As this workshop is part of the foundation’s mentoring program there were new chamber pieces written for the workshop by 2 mentored composers of the foundation. The workshop offered working sessions with Peter Eötvös, Georges Aperghis, Gregory Vajda and the two mentored composers: Francisco Domínguez and Balázs Kecskés D. During the first day all the participants were analysing the pieces, composers also got in person consultations with Georges Aperghis and Peter Eötvös. During

-9-

rehearsals the mentees and active participants could work on each piece and also they had the possibility to work with great soloists. Peter Eötvös and Georges Aperghis were instructing them and preparing them for the closing concert which has been organised within the program of the newly established Liszt Festival by Müpa (Palace of Arts Budapest). The festival gave a great promotion opportunity to the young talents, a booklet was printed and the concert was features on all platforms of the festival. Program of the masterclass: R. Strauss: Serenade, Op. 7 Balázs Kecskés D: Wind – world premiere Péter Eötvös: Aurora – Hungarian premiere Francisco Domínguez: Kharir IV – world premiere Georges Aperghis: Migrants – Hungarian premiere Featuring: Viola Thurnay, Márta Murányi – voice, Matthew McDonald – double bass, Danubia Orchestra Óbuda Conductors: Joanna Natalia Ślusarczyk, Jonas Bürgin, and selected conductors of the masterclass Supporters: National Cultural Fund, Liszt Festival by Müpa, Budapest Music Center, Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne

8. Audition for the 2022 mentoring year Overlapping mentoring years, additional programs We received a great number of applications for 2022 and it was also a great surprise given the special pandemic environment. These applications and interests came towards previous application processes and during the year as in 2020 we did not know how things will unfold with the pandemic and we were thinking that an official audition would mean we are certain of organising programs. Instead of the formal audition, the professors used every opportunity when we had the chance to organise a program to seek for great young talents and they have selected the new mentees via this process. Because of the pandemic we had to reduce the number of selected mentees what we hope to elevate to the original number if the pandemic allows us. Also the mentee years began to overlap because of the Covid situation so even this year we also welcomed mentees from previous years who could not finished their program and it will happen in 2022, too.

- 11 -

As we had fewer in person program during the year, Peter Eötvös and Gregory Vajda consulted with our mentees via zoom or skype many times about their new projects, mentoring concerts, composing ideas and just about general question concerning their career. We think we stepped up the online presence to meet the needs of the mentees and to try to help them in many ways. Peter Eötvös and Gregory Vajda selected the following young talents for 2021: Martin Rajna, conductor, Hungary Jonas Bürgin, conductor, Switzerland Balázs D. Kecskés, composer, Hungary Francisco Dominguez, composer, Spain Peter Eötvös and Gregory Vajda selected the following young talents for 2022: Nicoló Forón, condctor, Italy Jonsung Oh, composer, South-Korea

Balázs D. Kecskés / Mentoring concert in March 2023. The music of Balázs Kecskés D. can be characterized by both emotional depth and intellectual richness. His compositions are “pieces of art created with gentle colours, and carefully composed over time” (as per the laudation by Máté Hollós). He draws from the historical traditions of the past centuries, while creating his own, unique world by placing elements with a long history – forms and harmonies – into a new context. As Jeanette Fang described his piano quartet titled Accusativus: “Balázs creates mesmerizing moments of suspended beauty, with an ear for stillness and reverie that makes one think of Debussy”. As a lecturer at the Composition Department of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, Kecskés D. considers teaching and musical history research his vocation, besides composing being his primary activity. His repertoire includes a wide range of works such as solo and chamber music, orchestral compositions, concertos, in addition to vocal works. He composes for chamber ensembles with a long tradition (piano quartet, piano trio), and for choirs. His compositions containing lyrics often cover sacral topics, and draw on philosophical writings. His oratorio for string quartet and four voices titled Komm is based on the texts of Gilles Deleuze, Claire Parnet, Paul Thymich, and T. S. Eliot. This work evokes the chorales of Bach while also highlights current, burning questions of our times. Francisco Dominguez / Mentoring concert in 2023/24 He studied composition with Gabriel Erkoreka at Musikene (Spain), where he finished his Bachelor degree with an honorific mention. Afterwards he continued his studies with Beat Furrer and Klaus Lang at the Kunstuniversität Graz (Austria), where he finished his studies with an honorific mention. He also had classes and masterclasses with Helmut Lachenmann, Ramon Lazkano, Hèctor Parra, Alberto Posadas and Rebecca Saunders, among others. He has been awarded numerous prestigious international prizes, including the first prize at the competitions “Pablo Sorozabal” (XV edition) and “Francisco Escudero “ (VII and IX editions) and honourable mentions at the “Franz Schubert” competition (X edition) and the “Composition Competition for Young Composers of SGAE Foundation” (XXVI edition). His music has been performed in numerous prestigious festivals such as BBVA, IMPULS and the Juan March Foundation. In addition, he has worked with renown performers such as Iñaki Alberdi, Michael Faust, Henri Bok, L’Instant Donné, THReNSeMBLe, Schallfeld Ensemble, the Castilla y León Symphony Orchestra and the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra.
