Bridge Space Date: August 2016 Purpose: Architectural Design Studio Program: Health Facility Location: French River, Ontario Designed to provide a safe environment for rehabilitative engagement, Bridge Space is a mental health clinic located along the French River on the previous site of the Pine Cove Lodge. Formally, this health facility rests between two masses of lands, connecting two areas that would otherwise be disjointed. The experience of going through the bridge to engage into the rehabilitation space is provided to assure the participants of the start of their journey. By removing themselves from previous traumatic triggers and entering an area of reserve, the building’s physical presence manifests a portal between the past and the hopeful future.

0-1-2 Plaza Date: December 2017 Purpose: Architectural Design Studio Program: Urban Plaza Location: Seoul, Korea The numbers 0 - 1 - 2 (pronounced young-il-ee in Korean) is a homphone for the word “forever. The 0-1-2 Seoul Plaza is a project that proposes a strategy to strengthen and activate the pre-existing Seoul City Plaza, located in the heart of Seoul in front of the City Hall. Currently under scrutiny and criticism for its uninspired and unengaging attempt at accelerating modernism within the city, the existing site disregards the elements that co-exist around the site and fails to provide an active and inviting space for the citizens. This proposal takes into account the existing uses and programs of the existing site and introduces new elements that work in tandem with the underground train/ mall condition.

Le Fondation Cartier Date: February 2017 Purpose: Architectural Design Studio Program: Case Study Location: Paris, France Done in collaboration with: Joshua MacDonald, Alyssa Tang, Samiah Meem. This project resides in the Montparnasse district of Paris, seen as the artistic heart of the city. There were many complications with building requirements and what they were permitted to do - the biggest restriction being only allowed to build on the existing footprint. Due to the restriction of space, one of the driving factors of the design was to simulate a sense of spatial extension. Reflecting the lines of the boulevard, he layers planes of glass to create a multiplicity of thresholds. These superimpositions create a dichotomy of real and virtual.

Spatial Mosaic Date: May 2015 Purpose: SSEF Competition Program: Religious Center Location: Toronto, Ontario By simplifying traditional religious spaces down to their fundamental architectonic elements, a cultural mosaic is created, allowing multiple religions to come together while also maintaining their unique spiritual identities. This is executed through a common, modular space that is continually recycled in order to host the spiritual complexity of the modern era. The interior steel mass, showcases the steel’s tensile strength by spanning twenty meters in order to optimize the spatial freedom needed to encompass such a diverse program. The ground plane, consisting of pneumatic floor tiles and rotating wall and ceiling panels allows for extensive tectonic customization. This offers the ability to alter the space’s topographical hierarchy, manipulation of light, orientation, and public exposure.

Inside, Out Date: March 2017 Purpose: Architectural Design Studio Program: Mixed-Use Development Location: Toronto, Ontario The intention of this project’s design is to explore the characteristics of shared space, as it transforms in relation to surrounding forms and programs. In exchanging views, boundaries, and barriers, the edges of a shared space define the nature of the experienced activity and atmosphere. This building utilizes the many different programs incorporated in a traditional mid-rise typology to frame two public squares within the site. The two squares both open up to open space (The West square towards the railway, and the East square towards Stanley Park) and take on a similar shape in form, but respond to its surrounding context to inform its quality and utility.

Architectural Animation Date: March 2017 Purpose: Advanced Visualization Program: Houdini/Rhino Location: Cambridge, Ontario This collection of architectural animation pieces were done for the Advanced Visualization class, which ran parallel with the year’s Design Studio. This course allowed for the experimentation of 3D story-telling with an emphasis on the element of time. Branching out from the typical representation methods of plans and rendered stills, the animation supplements allowed to observe and illustrate the effect of change and movement in our projects.

Le Fondation Cartier This animation was an accompaniment to the case study of Le Fondation Cartier. The purpose of this project was to explore the design motifs of the building as well as its relationship with the street and its surrounding elements. Diagrammatic scenes were used to express abstract ideas of spatial extension and form, while more realistic scenes were used to highlight key moments throughout the building.

Le Fondation Cartier Pt. 2 This shorter piece was done after the main case study to experiment with rendering techniques within Houdini. With the base objective of formulating a unique way to express the program of the many spaces within the building, the project was also an opportunity to explore animation in the sense of light and colour.

Thesis vs. Antithesis This project was a used to assist in the design process of the 3rd year studio design project: Inside, Out. In examining the ideas of thesis and antithesis, the video served to illustrate one of the main ideas of the project: solitude and community. The human scale was used along with preliminary massing models to depict the contrasts between the individual and the mass.

Inside, Out: Final Animation This animation was created to assist the final presentation of the 3rd year studio design project, Inside, Out. The main aspiration of this project was to investigate a method to combine the informational narrative of the project with the spatial narrative. This was achieved by attempting to tie in the diagrammatic sequences with the rendered sequences by depicting the the first sequence as a movie playing in the theatre (a core element of the project). Found footage, as well as overlays of Google Maps were also experimented with to tell the initial story of location, site, and program.

The purpose of the anmation was to capture the narrative of the approach in to the parking lot and visitor center that we had designed. As a major part of the project was that the parking was divided into different seasonal lots, I chose an elevational shot to pan and capture the journey between the different seasons. Furthermore, the excercised allowed for the exploration of landscape cinematography.

Pygmalion is a project that I took on with a group of 5 classmates. The film is an adaptation of the play written by Jean Rousseau, and explores the themes of the sublime and creation. The film was planned, shot, and edited in the span of two weeks, and all music was originally composed and recorded by the group. The aim of the film was to capture the madness of the artist in his quest for perfection.
73
Architecture + Rendering The following images are studies I have done in rendering to explore and test ideas regarding material, lighting, and composition. These excercises were pursued to experiment ways to express a narrative in a minimal fashion. The stills were created soley using V-Ray 3.6 to realize its capabilities in creating images without the need for additional post-production programs.
