2017 Architecture Design Portfolio.
My name is Peter Kwak, and I am a third year student currently studying at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I am very passionate about learning as much as I can about architecture as the science of building as well as the art of social construction and urban planning. I am a driven team-worker, and I always pursue opportunities to learn and improve myself as a student and as a person.

Connection April 2015 1B Design Studio Toronto, Ontario The Connection library focuses on the relationship between its visitors and the buildings through the manipulation of light, ceiling height, and openness of the floor-plan. The transition of space and its use are mostly defined by the dimensions of the free space around the visitor. The front glazing provides a large bright area while on the other hand, in the depths of the library, the smaller windows spread out, create a rhythms of light that follow the allocations of the bookshelves.

Spatial Mosaic May 2015 SSEF Competition Toronto, Ontario By simplifying traditional religious spaces down to their fundamental architectonic elements, a cultural mosaic is created, allowing multiple religions to come together while also maintaining their unique spiritual identities. This is executed through a common, modular space that is continually recycled in order to host the spiritual complexity of the modern era. The interior steel mass, showcases the steel’s tensile strength by spanning twenty meters in order to optimize the spatial freedom needed to encompass such a diverse program. The ground plane, consisting of pneumatic floor tiles and rotating wall and ceiling panels allows for extensive tectonic customization. This offers the ability to alter the space’s topographical hierarchy, manipulation of light, orientation, and public exposure.

Film House December 2015 2A Design Studio Cambridge, Ontario Film house provides a space for low income families and film artists to coexist and collaborate in the process of creation. With family units that have open production spaces, designated studio space within the artists’ residences, and alternating floor-plates that promote communication and collaboration, the building embodies the evolution of the industry and challenges creators to tackle the trade in a way integrated with living. The facade’s screen like windows open up the activities of the building to the public, simultaneously in a cycle of producing, receiving, and broadcasting, much like the life of the internet.

Bridge Space August 2016 2B Design Studio French River, Ontario Designed to provide a safe environment for rehabilitive engagement, Bridge Space is a mental health clinic located along the French River on the previous site of the Pine Cove Lodge. Formally, this health facility rests between two masses of lands, connecting two areas that would otherwise be disjointed. The experience of going through the bridge to engage into the rehabilitation space is provided to assure the participants of the start of their journey. By removing themselves from previous traumatic triggers and entering an area of reserve, the building ’s physical presence manifests a portal between the past and the hopeful future.

Personal Works Included here are excerpts from personal endeavors with my interests in film. I am interested in the techniques of composition in cinematography and photography. In terms of film, I pursue to explore varying methods of unfolding narratives, as well as the art of co-operation in the sense that many different disciplines intertwine to support one another to create a motion picture. I believe that these mediums are effective exercises in pushing your mind creatively and visually.

Home is a film that I made for the final project of my high school media studies class. The narration is a slam poem that I wrote and performed addressing the idea of what the word home means to me. The video contains images of buildings and common spaces through out the city of Vancouver and White Rock that encapsulates the essence of what community and belonging means to me.

This project was filmed over a weekend as part of a 48 hour film festival with a team of three other members. The festival provides you with a theme and a prop that must be included into the overall narrative of the film. That year, the theme was “When one door closes, another one opens, and the prop was a postcard. The film explores the memories of a man and his lover.

Pygmalion is a project that I took on with a group of 5 classmates. The film is an adaptation of the play writtenv by Jean Rousseau, and explores the themes of the sublime and creation. The film was planned, shot, and edited in the span of two weeks, and all music was originally composed and recorded by the group. The aim of the film was to capture the madness of the artist in his quest for perfection.
