This book investigates how handmade artists’ books excite the senses to communicate lived experiences of illness and disability. The combination of text, image, materials, and form, along with the gesture of turning pages, make artists’ books a powerful source of expressive potential. These works of art not only enable patients to create meaning from their medical experiences, but also invite healthcare learners to an uncensored read of critiques on Western medicine.

Artists’ books are increasingly popular among medical institutions in an age of digital screens because of their intimate handheld, multi-sensory expressions of bodily phenomena that may be difficult or impossible to communicate through words alone. By applying a phenomenological practice of sensing and meaning-making, the author provides step-by-step instructions for creating new artists’ books as part of health humanities pedagogies. Darian Goldin Stahl is an interdisciplinary printmaker, bookmaker, and health humanities scholar. After receiving an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Alberta, she was awarded a SSHRC Vanier Scholarship to pursue an interdisciplinary PhD in Humanities from Concordia University in Montreal. Situated at the intersection of fine art, communication studies, and art education, her research–creation investigates how making and reading artists’ books communicate lived experiences of illness and disability. Dr. Stahl is now a SSHRC Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Northern British Columbia’s Medical Program, where she facilitates the creation of new artists’ books with diverse patient groups. She is also a practicing artist whose work has been exhibited in numerous local and international solo exhibitions. Most notably, all of her artist’s books were acquired by the Wellcome Collection Trust in London in 2019, where they continue to evoke health discourses with public audiences.

“We often speak of the body of text, and Darian Goldin Stahl’s excellent and timely book deals with sister-inspired texts of the body. Stahl makes the case, beautifully and powerfully, for the value of artists’ books to open us up (like a laparotomy) to illness experience.”

This book offers a truly interdisciplinary exploration of the polymathic influences that shaped Through the Looking-Glass, the lesser explored sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It explores the work’s diverse historical intellectual influences as well as its kaleidoscopic afterlives, including scholars from the history of science, logic, philosophy, theology, literature, popular and visual culture, and translation studies as well as practitioners in business, data science, writing, and visual arts. The collection also offers insights into the minds of those who adapt, pastiche, or translate the Looking-Glass with an original poem, three new Jabberwockies, and an Italian translation of Looking-Glass’s iconic poem. This collection thus encourages us to re-evaluate the intellectual scope and place in society of this work.

Franziska E. Kohlt is a scholar of comparative literature, history of science, and science communication. She is a Leverhulme Research Fellow at the University of Leeds and the Inaugural Carrollian Fellow of the University of Southern California. She holds a doctorate from the University of Oxford, where she explored the shared histories of Victorian psychology and fantastic literature. She has published extensively on the life and works of Lewis Carroll, Victorian science, and childhood cultures. Justine Houyaux is a researcher and doctoral candidate at the Centre Interdisciplinaire de Recherche en Traduction et en Interpretation at the University of Liège, where her research focuses on culture-specific elements in the French translations of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the prosopography of Carroll’s Interwar translators, and the Surrealist reception of Carroll’s works. She recently edited the annotated Alice au pays des merveilles : Traduction et illustrations de René Bour (2023).

This volume explores the development towards mass digitisation and datafication and its transforming influence on our way of organising our cultural knowledge and heritage. In this context, cultural recycling plays a crucial role, even if it is in itself not a new phenomenon. However, the quality and quantity of recycling processes have altered profoundly in the postdigital age. The contributions of this volume consider various manifestations of these recycling processes and practices by providing the reader with a wide range of different case studies. Their authors highlight characteristic features of postdigital recycling that differ from the qualities of recycling processes and practices in previous periods. What the case studies show are the different recyclings […] Click here to read more.

Gender & Sexuality Studies

Do you sometimes look at yourself and think, “I can’t wear this without a bra – my nipples are showing”? Have you ever heard someone tell you that “you can’t go out like that”, after looking you up and down?

This book is a thought-provoking exploration of the double standards faced by women. Through personal stories and insightful analysis, it challenges Western societal norms and the pressure to conform. Delving into the complex interplay between femininity, bras and societal expectations, this empowering read invites individuals to redefine their understanding of what it means to be “decent” in a patriarchal society.

Edgar Wind (1900–1971) was a cosmopolitan scholar who made important contributions to many disciplines, including philosophy, Renaissance art history and modern art criticism.

This book considers a crucial question: to understand the work of an art historian, how important is it to know their life story? In the case of Edgar Wind, biography and scholarly endeavour are intimately connected. His intellectual exchanges with leading art historians, philosophers and artists of his day were essential for his research. Moreover, his wife, Margaret Wind, was determined to establish an Edgar Wind Archive after his death.

This book is the first comprehensive study in English of Wind’s intellectual achievements.

“A completely fascinating volume. Essential reading on the development of art and cultural history in the twentieth century. It confirms Edgar Wind as one of the master thinkers in both domains. Difficult, mercurial and always original, his work has never ceased to be stimulating, as this book so vividly shows. No one who heard his lectures as the first Professor of Art History at Oxford, or his 1960 Reith lectures entitled Art and Anarchy has ever forgotten the richness of their content or the elegance with which he delivered them. His brilliance and his complicated character could not emerge more clearly than in this outstanding series of essays – one as compelling as the other. It could hardly be otherwise. This is a team of both younger and more senior scholars headed by Jaynie Anderson (more responsible than any for the revival of Wind’s reputation), that includes Oswyn Murray (who knew him well), and Elizabeth Sears (who knows the complex cast of characters involved in the history of the great institute founded by Aby Warburg in Hamburg better than anyone else). Here are rich accounts of Wind’s challenges to Warburg’s colleagues and protegés such as Ernst Cassirer, Fritz Saxl, Erwin Panofsky and many others, as well as his fundamental role in the transfer of the Institute to London and the consequences of his unfortunate separation from it.”

- David Freedberg, Pierre Matisse Professor Emeritus of the History of Art, Columbia University

“This close attention to Edgar Wind is long overdue. The vast range of interests and ideas of the German-trained mainstay of art history in England at last find proper tribute and assessment in this volume. Not only are his own close studies of cultural symbols examined anew, but his dialogues with mentors are also assessed. This collection of scholarly essays provides a much-needed suggestion of Wind’s own contributions and should spark a vital return to his legacy.”

- Larry Silver, Farquhar Professor of Art History, Emeritus, University of Pennsylvania

“Scandinavian Design” as a myth, a brand and a shorthand for a range of design ideas has proved an enduring and adaptable construct. Its export around the world has ensured that it has touched and transformed design cultures from Europe to Australia. At the same time, the Nordic design it draws on has been shaped and reshaped by influences from beyond the Nordic countries and by reflection on its own global success. This collection of essays considers Nordic design from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day within transnational dynamics of cultural interaction, circulations and cross-border flows that highlight exchange and reciprocity. Engaging with a range of Nordic and Nordic-inspired material objects, techniques, practices and concepts, the essays assess both the impact they have had on new cultural contexts and the ways they themselves have been fashioned and refashioned in response to foreign influences.

“Nordic Design in Translation: The Circulation of Objects, Ideas and Practices is an exciting and necessary addition to the discourse on material culture, bringing together fresh approaches to the transnational character of Nordic design. The contributors take the reader outside the established frameworks of national, institutional and disciplinary boundaries and offer us a way to think about the circulation of objects, ideas and practices and their interconnection with wider influences and cultural contexts.”

- Professor Juliette MacDonald, Chair of Craft History and Theory, Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh

“With the ambition to go underneath the veneer of “Scandinavian Design”, this volume offers original perspectives on artistic and cultural transfer. Case studies spanning the twentieth century challenge canonical trajectories of unidirectional influence and demonstrate how design and its ideas translate across nations. It is a vital contribution to contemporary scholarship and an inspiring read for everyone interested in design history in the Nordic region and beyond.”

- Christina Pech, Senior Lecturer, History of Art, University of Oslo

This edited book aims to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue on the intersections between the coining of the “Western Music” concept and the institutionalised and entrepreneurial management of culture. It studies the emergence of the trademark “Western Music” in relation to the commodification of leisure, the institutionalisation of academic discourses, and the transnational imperial politics of culture. This collective work devotes particular attention to the ways events, such as the virtuosi concert tours, song contests, diplomatic acts, or mass broadcastings have created possibilities for homogenisation and globalisation of a corpus of musical practices, repertoires, and ways of thinking, ambiguously labelled, as “Western” along the long 20th Century.

In the decades after the Second World War, Denmark’s national image in Britain was greatly changed through the acclaim it received for its modern architecture and design, which British critics, consumers and entrepreneurs increasingly came to desire and emulate. Using architecture and design historical methods, this book relates Danish post-war success in promoting architecture and design in Britain to wider political and economic contexts. It also documents and analyses the multiple contributory aspects of what may now be considered to have been an early exemplar of the successful marketing of identity through the outputs of creative industries. In addition, it explains the human relationships and networks of acquaintances involved in the promotion of Danish creativity […] Click here to read more.

“This is a splendidly lucid and readable book, a distinctive and a distinguished contribution to Nordic Studies.”

- Colin Roth, Centre for Nordic Studies, University of Sheffield

“Eloquently narrates with precision and wit the fascinating story of how the objects and imagery of Danish architecture, design and lifestyle helped satisfy an appetite for novel and improved ways of living among British consumers during the postwar decades.”

This book reflects on a journey as a shamanic healer and a psychotherapist, and how the integration of psychotherapy and traditional healing methods emerged. It explores an initial training in cognitive behavioural psychotherapy, to gestalt therapy, to body therapy, to energy healing and shamanism, to develop a unified theory. It explores the process by means of a dialogue between a psychotherapist, a shamanic healer, an academic and an integrative therapist. This is placed in a dialogue within the therapist herself. Later chapters give examples of the unified theory in practice, including both individual and in group settings. Opening and closing chapters contextualise the work in the context of developments on the internet in the areas of wellbeing and therapeutic practices drawing on different cultures.

The essays in this collection reconsider Roland Barthes as a crucial figure in intermedia studies, arguing that the concepts and forms of analysis he pioneered are of continuing importance for students and scholars working in the field. These essays utilize an interdisciplinary methodology, drawing on Barthes’s own intermedial critical practice, to examine the multiple relationships between art, literature, music and performance and across different languages. The collection places Barthes’s writing in critical dialogue with other theorists, including Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Dick Higgins and Emmanuel Levinas, investigating the work of figures as varied as André Breton, Giordano Bruno, Alain Cavalier, Alfred Hitchcock, Marcel Schwob, W. G. Sebald, Steven Spielberg, Yoko Tawada and Lev Tolstoy. […] Click here to read more.

“This volume locates itself neatly in the growing collection of publications on intermediality by relating such practices to Roland Barthes. Barthesian motifs and writerly concerns are found within a variety of intermedial practices, as the analysis moves, historically and globally, across visual, aural and literary cultures. Such an approach is both appropriate and innovative within Barthes Studies and in cultural theory more generally.”

In the shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic, death has become an all too familiar feature of the early 2020s. The 21st century has in fact produced a singular historical moment with its unique intersection of popular politics, environmental extremes, globalisation and technological innovation, which has correspondingly created distinctive expressions of death, as well. This companion reveals our visions of death in the 21st century and what they say about us and the times we live in. Organised into sections on the war on terror, technology, climate change, extremism and global pandemics, the short, reader-friendly essays in this volume highlight crucial encounters with death in the contemporary period.

This volume explores the political life of rage as it has been experienced and mobilized in the Francosphere since 1968. If mai is remembered as a failure to convert insurrectionary feeling into lasting political change, the vast number of activist groups who have alchemized their anger into resistance over the past fifty years are a testament to the continued, necessary role of rage in political life.

This volume traces the various morphologies of anger across French-language literature, thought, cinema and activism. From Black feminisms to punk, flamboyance to suicide, cacophonous sound to riotous song, the contributions probe the aesthetics and politics of rage. This collection also examines the uneven legitimization of political anger – how rage is allowed to be expressed, by whom and in which contexts. Rage is often dismissed as inimical to proper academic inquiry: what unites the contributions in this publication is a commitment to thinking with feeling.

A unique experiment at the frontlines of the Cold War, the German Democratic Republic collapsed more than thirty years ago. But it did not simply vanish. Far from being a footnote in history, the state and its legacies continue to inform identities, politics, and culture today. Studies of surveillance and government control, individual agency and equal opportunity, informal networks, strategic alliances, and strategies subverting limitations on freedom of expression prompt us to rethink our conceptualizations of the GDR.

Introducing the work of a new generation of researchers, this collection applies such approaches to a wide range of examples from film, theatre, music, literature, radio, and law. The chapters explore and transgress temporal, national, and disciplinary boundaries. From these investigations emerges a pervasive pattern of informal, border-transcending spheres, subversive identity discourses, […] Click here to read more.

This book is divided into 5 chapters, each dealing with a different aspect of the management of this unprecedented health crisis. The first chapter is devoted to issues of respect for constitutional law and fundamental freedoms in the countries examined focusing on emergency measures. The second chapter deals with Covid management in a comparative study, taking into account intercultural aspects and influences in several areas of economic and social life. The third chapter looks at the secondary effects of pandemic protection measures. These effects have not always been sufficiently taken into account in government decisions. It is only by looking back that we can analyse these consequences. Life during the pandemic was largely reduced to digital life. To some extent, this digitisation has allowed activities to continue, but it has not been without risk. […] Click here to read more.

This book examines the processes of symbolic cultivation of identity promoted by Armenian cultural elites in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, focusing on the transmission of positive language ideologies and emotional elements related to collective memory. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and a range of primary materials, this work sheds light on the role of the Armenian alphabet in legitimizing collective visions of ‘distinctiveness’ and of the Armenian Genocide remembrance in shaping non-exclusive, transnational patterns of belonging. While contributing to the study of the complex dynamics and challenges of ‘Armenian survival’ across space and time, it situates the issue in the unique context of Bulgaria, analyzing, moreover, the impact of proximity to Turkey.

This book summarizes China’s ten-year experience of cultural heritage protection by providing case analysis of both successful and unsatisfying practices. It is written with an academic perspective and based on the author’s real practice. The first part highlights the cultural distinction in urban planning; the second part analyzes the cultural heritage protection concept and practice in China’s urbanization; the third part focuses on China’s museums in a revolutionary era. The book records the development stages of China’s cultural heritage protection theory and practice and shows the challenges in the new era. It answers questions such as how to protect historic community and villages, how to protect the heritage site and build heritage parks, […] Click here to read more.

The book is designed as a methodological exercise in cultural studies described as “engaging”, which refers to a specific research approach requiring cooperation and the inclusion of individuals and communities in the research process, using a rich repertoire of humanistic traditions as a tool of social criticism. The key is to treat cultural studies as a workshop in which the researcher changes from a distant observer into a practical person – a public intellectual and craftsman at the same time. The turn from “engaged” to “engaging” research methodologies described in the book is strongly rooted in the tradition of the philosophy of praxis and the theory of social practices, from Aristotle, through Marxist theories, to contemporary participatory action research. The book examines the doppelgänger persona’s gradual shift to representations of the self as simulacrum and responds to changing conceptions of identity that celebrate the potentiality of alterity. Varied literary, visual, and digital narratives of the self showcase the doppelgänger as an increasingly imagebased construction. The increasing visuality of the doppelgänger corpus engages with notions of exteriorisation, fragmentation, and the materialisation of unfulfilled possibilities, reflecting a sense of self that indulges in multiple realities and alternative lives. The literature of Jorge Luis Borges and Carlos Fuentes reveal the birth of multiple selfhoods that are rooted in temporality; Willem Hermans, José Saramago, and Denis Villeneuve put forth under-represented experiences of alienation and the remedial powers of the alter; contemporary photographic campaigns […] Click here to read more.

“Alia Soliman’s re-assessment of the motif of the doppelgänger moves it comprehensively into the twenty-first century and adds new dimensions to the figure. Here, through incisive readings, the double is brought to perspectives on ageing, the crisis of masculinity and, crucially, our digital condition. Soliman’s book prompts vital questions about the literary, cultural and social work the double can do.”

- Patrick ffrench, Professor of French, King’s College London

“Alia Soliman’s book focuses on aspects of the female double, the doppelgänger in Latin American literature, contemporary photography and in social media, making relevant contributions to scholarship. Considering the growing importance of the digital double and the implications of public image and self-perception, this publication presents an interesting link from the motif’s literary past to its multi-mediated present.”

- Gerald Bär, Professor of Literature and Cultural Studies, Universidade Aberta, Lisbon

“From the female double to digital doppelgänger trends, this book offers a topical investigation into issues pertaining to identity formation through the lens of the double. Emanating from the literary realm and into photography, film, and new media, the study reveals new and exciting engagements with the doppelgänger that span feminist, visual, and digital studies.”

In this volume, questions at the intersection of mental representations and their verbal and non-verbal means of expression are discussed, using embodiment theory as a basis. Focus is placed on establishing interdisciplinary relationships between linguistics, philosophy, psychology, anthropology, cultural studies, literary studies and translation studies. The theoretical reflections are studied in a vast catalogue of different culture-specific phenomena from the world’s most diverse European, Asian, African and Ancient American cultures. The book is divided into three parts: 1. The Relation of Body, Mind and Language, 2. Culture-Specific Concepts and their Linguistic and Ideographic Expression, and 3. Embodiment, Disembodiment, Intercorporeality and Physical Expression.

Volume III of Archerian Studies, which we now deliver to our readers, focuses on the question of culture. Despite the numerous motifs which were introduced to the discourse pertaining to Margaret S. Archer’s concept, we see that some repeat here constantly. We hope that this way of depicting considerations inspired by the thought of prominent scholars will not only become an occasion for this scientific literary output to become widespread, but will also open new research perspectives in sociology.

[…] Click here to read more.

This book presents a renewed consideration of women’s poetry in ancient Greek literature by offering a detailed analysis of the works attributed to female poets from the Hellenistic era. These scarce and fragmented texts are translated and interpreted within the context of ancient Greece’s written traditions, especially within the framework of a potential women’s poetic tradition. This autonomous poetic heritage, presumably initiated by Sappho in the archaic period, is defined as a tradition of literary influence between women writers and their female forebears, all of whom – scholarship has argued – focused collectively, and exclusively, on feminine values, concerns, and experiences. The essays that make up this book cover a diverse range of subjects, all broadly on the theme of child refugees from Nazism in Britain. The book’s three sections – on displacement, children in art, and children in education and play – indicate the various topics considered in the study. The authors come from different academic fields – including German and Austrian exile studies, art history, language and literature, and education – so each chapter offers a depth of research as well as adding to the breadth of the overarching theme. Thus far, there has been no study dedicated to examining both the experience of these refugee children and those who worked with them, and yet they and their own children live on, marked in different ways by their experience and making their own mark in British art and literature too.

This volume explores the enduring influence of Introduction to the Science of Sociology, published a century ago by Robert Park and Ernest Burgess. It brings together scholars from the United States, Canada, and Italy, who collectively demonstrate the work’s enduring relevance and its important role in the dialogue between European and American sociology. The contributors examine topics raised in the original text that remain as relevant as ever, including segregation, the concept of assimilation and the marginal man, subcultures, constructive isolation, collective behavior, the German roots of the Chicago School, socio-spatial evolution over time, fashion and metropolis, and social creativity from the ecological school to the digital challenge.

In the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, nearly one-third of the population of today’s Slovenia permanently settled in countries around the world. Many more were traveling back and forth, searching for work to ensure the survival of the family members left behind at home and the prosperity for the families and communities they were creating abroad.

From one of the smallest nations in Europe, barely reaching one and a half million inhabitants at the time, people depar ted in numbers reaching 440,000. This book tells their stories about the “daring dreams of the future,” as the Slovenian poet Oton Župancˇicˇ—whose words open the book—so beautifully put it. […] Click here to read more.

This edited volume offers the first overview on human-animal history in the Baltics. Investigating historical entanglements between human and non-human animals from the pre-Christian times to the Soviet period and discussing a wide range of species, the volume integrates transnational study of Baltic history and culture with interdisciplinary human-animal studies. Taking the interrelatedness of species as a premise, the contributions focus on a variety of contacts and their representations in written, material, visual and other sources of Baltic history. Covering a time period of nearly one thousand years, the chapters also make it possible to trace continuity and change in Baltic human-animal history over extended periods.

The book presents a concise and intelligible history of the Slovenes. The authors take into due consideration the history of the territory between the Eastern Alps and the Pannonian Plain, starting with the period that began long before the first Slavic settlements. Thus, they wish to emphasize that the Slovenes’ ancestors did not settle an empty territory, but rather coexisted with other peoples and cultures ever since their arrival in the Eastern Alps. This has enabled them to build a community shaped by countless influences stemming from a long period of living alongside German, Romance, and South Slav neighbors in a melting pot of languages, cultures, and landscapes. The same reasons have most probably also contributed to the perception of their land as a “land in between.” Constituting a link between Eastern and Western Europe, […] Click here to read more.

“The Land Between is the first concise history of Slovenia and Slovenes written in English by leading scholars from the country. The authors base their arguments on Slovenian, former Yugoslav, and Western sources to provide a comprehensive account of Slovenes’ political, social, economic and cultural history, from early Slav settlements to the present day. The authors focus on Slovenian history but, to their credit, manage to place it in a wider context of empires and states to which Slovenian lands had belonged throughout history. The book will be of use to students of Slovenia and East-Central Europe, to diplomats, journalists, tourists, and anyone interested in this part of the world. It represents a welcome addition to the historiography of Slovenia and former Yugoslavia as well as a unique insight into the state of scholarship in post-1991 Slovenia.”

- Dejan Djokić, historian, National University of Ireland, Maynooth

“A study which makes the reader feel and understand that since the end of the Cold War there is a new lease of life for Central Europe. The former borderlands between East and West construct their new identities. Slovenia is one of the most successful new democratic societies in the middle of Europe. This book is an excellent history of Slovenia which maps the narrative of a small European people without falling into the traps of national mythmaking. Writing about a small European country with two million inhabitants which crave for Central European, Mediterranean and Balkan traditions at the same time is no simple task. The book makes fine reading for everybody interested in understanding the fascinating and creative complexities in the heart of Europe. Highly recommendable for history lovers and historians alike!”

As a small community located on the peripheries of Europe and of the Jewish world, Ireland’s Jewish community is something of an outlier and is often portrayed as having a unique history or being quaint or quirky in character. This book challenges this narrative by contextualizing Irish Jewry as a community that has been defined by the experience and mythology of Jewish mass migration. This book charts the history of Ireland’s Jewish community at a time of rapid growth and cultural, political and social transition, from British rule to Irish independence, exploring the relationship between Jews, Irish society and Irish Jewish communal tradition. Key themes include arrival and settlement; the dynamics between “native” and immigrant Jews; acculturation and hybridity; intracommunal conflict; gender; and Jewish/non-Jewish relations.

“Natalie Wynn has written a definitive account of Irish Jewish history in the period of mass migration at the turn of the twentieth century. She unravels the myths—such as accidental arrival from eastern Europe, or untroubled social mobility as a model minority—which have hitherto characterized Irish Jews. Community, Identity, Conflict moves from detailed studies of local communities (Belfast, Dublin, Cork, Limerick) to the metropolitan and colonial contexts of minority formation. As Dr Wynn adeptly shows, the everyday ambivalence towards minorities in Irish culture is a centuries-old history which is still present today. Her meticulous and compelling study will be of value to Irish studies, Jewish studies, and anyone interested in the life experience of refugees.”

- Bryan Cheyette, Emeritus Professor, University of Reading, and author of The Ghetto: A Very Short Introducti on (2020)

“Natalie Wynn has produced an outstanding contribution to the relevant literature. It dismantles established myths and opens up the field of Irish Jewish studies with a fresh, innovative interpretation, which sets new standards in scholarship.”

[…] Click here to read more.

In recent years, norms, normalities, and normativities have been disrupted. Although the idea of “normal” is local and subjective, norms are essential to social and collective behaviours, thus the meanings, ideologies, and relationships of power that structure those behaviours. At the same time, the disruption of norms can create disagreements about what is “normal” and inspire novel ways of being.

This volume explores – from various discourse-analytic perspectives – the complex relationships between norms and discourse, and draws attention to the thematically and methodologically pluralistic work in Discourse Studies investigating these relationships across various social domains.

Politic Words reflects five decades of writing about and discussing Irish literature, both inside the university classroom and in various literary and academic forums. Part one concentrates upon Irish women writers, their influence and example including Edna Longley, Eavan Boland and Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin alongside the achievements of younger contemporaries such as Lucy Caldwell and Leontia Flynn. Part two develops some of the historical settings and themes of part one while exploring the social and political legacies of traumatic Irish historical events such as the Great Famine, and its representation in the fiction of William Carleton and reimagined by later interpreters including Benedict Kiely. The collection concludes with […] Click here to read more.

“Politic Words is an invigorating mix of the personal, the political and the poetic. Gerry Dawe flings his net wide. From Eavan Boland’s ‘secret history’ of women to war memoirist Christabel Bielenberg’s luminous prose; from the vaulting ambition of Éilís Dillon’s historical fiction to hunger striker’s Bobby Sands’ favourite poet, the now unsung Ethna Carbery, he takes us on a bracing journey from the Troubles to Brexit. Drawing on contemporaneous criticism, Dawe revitalizes 35 years of cultural history into urgent news from the literary front.”

In the world’s so-called honor and face cultures, certain values and codes related to the protection of a family’s stainless reputation are deep-rooted. When they are violated by what is perceived as an immoral action, and the respective transgression becomes known, the honor not only of the deviant, but also of the in-group itself is damaged. This leads to stigmatization followed by collective rejection. Consequently, the stigma needs to be removed, usually by a publicly recognizable punitive action taken against those who caused this loss of honor or face, which is experienced as a kind of social death. The punishments range from psychological to physical violence, sometimes including murder. With attention to social science as well as works of […] Click here to read more.

This book compares the recent science fiction renaissances in the UK and China, known as the British and Chinese SF Booms, which emerged in the late 1980s. The author contextualizes the two booms within the transformative political and cultural histories of both countries, characterized by the politico-economic shifts initiated by Margaret Thatcher and Deng Xiaoping. In an era marked by the state’s retreat from society and the redefinition of social subjects through market competition, science fiction assumes a crucial counter position for cultural critique, envisioning alternatives and possibilities embodied in utopian hopes.

Emphasizing the “local” rather than the “global” nature of science fiction, The Boom & The Boom interrogates how boom writers in the UK and China respond to specific sociopolitical conditions in their respective regions. […] Click here to read more.

As World War II ended, refugees fled Soviet-occupied Lithuania, finding shelter in the displaced persons camps of Europe. By 1949, most had emigrated to North America. They brought with them opposing narratives about the Nazi occupation (1941–1944) when 95 percent of Lithuania’s Jewish community was annihilated. Trauma narratives were passed down to the second and third generations through collective memory. Through postmemory, cultural memory, and trauma theory, Vanished Lands analyzes literary works by North American Jewish and Lithuanian writers who speak over the silence of decades, seeking answers.

“Dr. Laima Vincė Sruoginis, an established author, academic, and life-long part of the North American Lithuanian diaspora, courageously faces Lithuania’s difficult historical legacy in her ground-breaking book. She researched her community’s refugee ancestors, drawing both from personal interviews and dusty academic sources, confronting uncomfortable truths.”

In the increasingly globalised consumer culture of the twentyfirst century, consumer goods have long become more than mere commodities: they are markers of identity and tools of narration. Advertising, branding and other processes of consumer culture are ubiquitous and charge objects with meaning, impacting the way we perceive them and those who wear, use, showcase or discard them. This close link between consumer culture and the narration of identities – ranging from an individual to a national level – affects the construction of “national brands”, as can be seen through contemporary writing. With a focus on post-2000 Austrian literature, this book unveils how a skilful reading of consumer objects – both branded and non-branded – can enrich literary analysis. Introducing the concept of consumer literacy and applying it to Wolf Haas’ Das Wetter vor […] Click here to read more.

[…] Click here to read more.

ÜberLebenswege is the first book that is exclusively based on extensive interviews and Malanda is to be commended for a narrative that emphasizes the subjective experiences and interpretations of those she interviewed.”

The Lowrider Studies Reader: Culture, Resistance, Liberation, and Familia is the first book dedicated to lowrider studies in the world. This inaugural volume is a powerful groundbreaking book that is a collection of writings from brilliant scholar/practitioners speaking on lowrider history, pedagogy, culture, politics, society, justice, art, language, education, and their significance within the societal schema. Lowrider studies, influenced by beautifully painted hydraulic cars, bicycles with chrome, gold, murals and strolling slow and low, is a growing global field. This book is a must for all Latina/o/x/e studies, Chicana/ o/x studies, ethnic studies, sociology, and cultural studies programs. This interdisciplinary and intersectional work emerged from of the 1st Annual International Lowrider Studies Conference, a public and no-cost grassroots effort organized by Save the Kids. Like Hip Hop, lowrider culture is a space and place to divert violence, promote peace, and build familia. Read this book slow and low.

Restrictively more than most, the collective image of Black women’s identities are created by others. The glamorized life of Black women with light skin and the presumed likeness to whiteness has caused division within the Black community for years. Most often written and spoken of is the victimization of darker-hued women due to their skin tone. This thoughtful book explores colorism, which is a form of internalized racism, from the perspective of a light-skinned Black woman. By examining the social construction of race through the lens of Black Feminist Thought and Critical Race Theory the author uncovers a different narrative of colorism. Intimate accounts of skin tone stratification from Dr. Simpkins’ own lived experience are shared as she engages in self-awareness throughout the entire book. […] Click here to read more.

In this volume, scholars analyze contemporary Black British and American women’s fiction that tackles issues of violence and its representations. The book gives readers a wide perspective about recent research on the history of Black women who have been subjected to physical and psychological violence, which defines the identities of those women who suffer it. The psychosocial and emotional consequences of violence leave traces that speak of vulnerability, but they also activate resistance and resilience mechanisms as suppliers of identity and personal agency, as reflected on the female characters and authors studied through this volume. The essays aim at publicizing less known writers who denounce abuse, trauma and discrimination, reflecting resilience and resistance mechanisms and taking the ethical rethinking of how we are building our social and culture relations.

Chill and swaggering colorbent Founding Fathers have been blowing away Hamilton audiences since 2015. And there is no doubt that Lin-Manuel Miranda created an artistic monumental vessel of empowerment for people of Color whose stories have been left out. Yet, when we dig deeper into the historical evidence that Hamilton is based on, we come across a treasure trove of questions regarding the women in the musical. Was Angelica really a feminist? What is Theodosia’s connection to the duel? Did Eliza know about her husband’s affair with Maria? Were Alexander and Angelica in love? And why is Sally voiceless as the one character who is based on a person of Color? These questions are explored using a Critical Race Theory intersectional lens as well as feminist and anti-racist scholarship.

Science is magic that works. Science is magic that works.

Kurt Vonnegut Kurt Vonnegut

During the last three decades, Europe has undergone numerous periods of economic and political instability. The process of European integration, once hailed as a beacon of a peaceful co-operation between many, if not all, European nations appears to be stagnating, giving rise to notoriously more frequent manifestations of xenophobic violence, nationalism and right-wing fundamentalism. This book evaluates the portrayal of the migrant Other in selected examples of contemporary French and German cinema from the period 1989–2020 in the context of the ongoing debate about European identity and its socio-political significance. It focuses on the films of some of Europe’s most prolific contemporary filmmakers, such as Michael Haneke, Claire Denis and Fatih Akin. […] Click here to read more.

Cultural Interactions: Studies in the Relationship between the Arts

Interdisciplinary activity is now a major feature of academic work in all fields. The traditional borders between the arts have been eroded to reveal new connections and create new links between art forms. Cultural Interactions is intended to provide a forum for this activity. It will publish monographs, edited collections and volumes of primary material on points of crossover such as those between literature and the visual arts or photography and fiction, music and theatre, sculpture and historiography. It will engage with book illustration, the manipulation of typography as an art form, or the ‘double work’ of poetry and painting and will offer the opportunity to broaden the field into wider and less charted areas. It will deal with modes of representation that cross the physiological boundaries of sight, hearing and touch and examine the placing of these modes within their representative cultures. It will offer an opportunity to publish on the crosscurrents of nationality and the transformations brought about by foreign art forms impinging upon others. The interface between the arts knows no boundaries of time or geography, history or theory.

Cultural Memories

Cultural Memories is the publishing project of the Centre for the Study of Cultural Memory at the Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies, University of London. The Centre is international in scope and promotes innovative research with a focus on interdisciplinary approaches to memory. This series supports the Centre by furthering original research in the global field of cultural memory studies. In particular, it seeks to challenge a monumentalizing model of memory in favour of a more fluid and heterogeneous one, where history, culture and memory are seen as complementary and intersecting. The series embraces new methodological approaches, encompassing a wide range of technologies of memory in cognate fields, including comparative studies, cultural studies, history, literature, media and communication, and cognitive science. The aim of Cultural Memories is to encourage and enhance research in the broad field of memory studies while, at the same time, pointing in new directions, providing a unique platform for creative and forward-looking scholarship in the discipline.

Exile Studies

Exile Studies is a series of monographs and edited collections that takes a broad view of exile, including the life and work of refugees from National Socialism, and beyond. The series explores the different global and cultural spaces of exile and refuge as well as the specific historical, political and social concerns of exile writers and artists. The series engages with recent theoretical approaches to exile to shed new light on the unique conditions of mass flight from National Socialist persecution, with a particular interest in the work of Jewish refugees of the period. A plurality of theoretical approaches is encouraged, featuring research that reaches beyond national frameworks or disciplinary boundaries and takes multi-directional, transcultural or comparative approaches. The series aims to make connections to studies on more recent groups of refugees and to contribute to current debates. Themes include persecution, exclusion and delocalization, legacies of displacement, loss and acculturation as well as the creation of new homes and networks.

The series promotes dialogue among transnational, Jewish and memory studies, and among diaspora, Holocaust and postcolonial studies. It invites research that acknowledges questions of gender, race, class, religion and ethnicity as indispensable tools for understanding the cultural processes connected to the lives and works of refugees and exiles.

Imagining Black Europe

This series seeks to publish critical and nuanced scholarship in the field of Black European Studies. Moving beyond and building on the Black Atlantic approach, books in this series will underscore the existence, diversity and evolution of Black Europe. They will provide historical, intersectional and interdisciplinary perspectives on how Black diasporic peoples have reconfigured the boundaries of Black identity making, claim making and politics; created counterdiscourses and counterpublics on race, colonialism, postcolonialism and racism; and forged transnational connections and solidarities across Europe and the globe. The series will also illustrate the ways that Black European diasporic peoples have employed intellectual, socio-political, artistic/cultural, affective, digital and pedagogical work to aid their communities and causes, challenge their exclusion and cultivate ties with their allies, thus gaining recognition in their societies and beyond.

Race and Resistance Across Borders in the Long Twentieth Century

AND STEPHEN TUCK

This series focuses on the history and culture of activists, artists and intellectuals who have worked within and against racially oppressive hierarchies in the twentieth century and beyond, and who have then sought to define and to achieve full equality once those formal hierarchies have been overturned. It explores the ways in which such individuals - writers, scholars, campaigners and organizers, ministers, and artists and performers of all kinds - locate their resistance within a global context and forge connections with each other across national, linguistic, regional and imperial borders.

Transnational Cultures

Transnational Cultures promotes enquiry into the literary and cultural productions of transnational experiences characterized by the vertical and lateral exchanges of ideas, objects and linguistic practices across the globe.

The series encourages new work that investigates how a transnational lens might transform existing understandings of cultural exchange and identity formation in any period or location. We are particularly interested in research that shines a light on transnational cultural experiences that are underrepresented and explores how writers and artists from underrepresented groups position themselves vis-à-vis national and global forces.

The series strives to offer a renewed understanding of minor and minority expressions and articulations of transnational experiences that often escape national and global discourses.
